You know what I don't understand about van life... where's the shower/shitter?

EXACTLY! I don't get the "van life" thing. You can get a camp trailer for less than you can kit out a van, have more room, more storage AND you don't have to use an outhouse or a port-a-can! After a good ride, I'm going to be sweaty, stinky, and dusty or muddy, and I sure sleep better after a shower. I have to laugh at all the people that compliment the vans or roof-top tent crowd. Sure, it's a sweet build, but give me a camper any day. I see your van, but I'll raise you a shower and a shitter.

Trees to pee, public bathrooms for a dump and 12v outside shower you're all set

@sledMXer: And you can stay in hotels/B&Bs for much less than buying anything. I'd even rather a long drive than having to stay in a van.

I'm currently two months into full time van life, and I can tell you that you don't really need either.

Showering: We do Planet Fitness for showers, because they're everywhere. If you really want a shower in the backcountry, there are ones you can buy that attach to your roof, or you can get a camp shower. Getting a little stinky is part of the experience, though, and after a year of working from home, and showering less, it was easy to get used to. Baby wipes can help you spot clean the stinkier bits before bed, if you're going to be another day or so without getting a rinse. A lot of folks who do have a shower in their van end up using them as closets or storage space. They can be a big drain on water, and you have to manage all the moisture that they put out in such a confined space.

Toilet: Some folks have them, but it's all about how you dump the waste afterwards. You could run a small black water tank, but it becomes another thing that can break, and you need to visit an RV park to dump it (which adds up). There are other self-contained toilets, but the whole question of "How do I get rid of the waste?" still lingers. With the amount of space they take up, and the chore of finding places to dump it, a lot of folks pass on them. If you don't have access to public toilet, though: 48oz Nalgene bottle for #1, trowel for #2.

We get that van life isn't for everyone, but we've been loving it. We don't have to tow anything, since it's all contained in one vehicle. Trailers are cool too, so it doesn't really matter how you get out there, so long as you do.

@thereandbackagain: I guess it comes down to the person. I have no issues living dirty - go bush camping all the time! I guess it's the riding element for me. I'm dirty after a ride, sweat like a pig and one never really gets used to being covered in crusty salt and dirt. Living in a van? in a heartbeat. My farts are far more toxic than my pits! Living in a van and riding as often as possible? Not sure i could do that without a way to have a quick rinse. Good on you for finding a way to make it work!

@thereandbackagain: I love camping, and a couple of van days sounds good, but 2 months sounds absolutely grim to me. Very individual. If you can live (literally) on top of each other and never have any personal space (other than outside) then it probably suits, but I'm not like that. Probably depends a lot on the climate you're in!

@pourquois-pas. Wild wee. Portaloo and usually a shower bag hung from the back of the van. Some do fit one in. That’s big enough to have a combined one. Bog/shower unit. Not watched the video so not sure what he did.

I see Mr. Lieb is also a man of culture! The junk drawer is an important component of any living space.
