After a week of blistering speeds at MSA, the race becomes an instant classic with tights times and dreams come true. It’s Wyn Masters here to get you the post race interviews you’ve been waiting for.
@danstonQ: out of curiosity, does the regular media in Europe mention mtb race results? Other than the Olympics I've never heard anything in US media about pro mtb. Closest thing we ever had was probably that edited (and 2 months after the actual event) replay of Rampage on NBC. Guessing Canada is similar?
@bkm303: our sport is completely underrated and neglected. In France, medias prefer to speak about the french losers of the Tour de France than about our successful mountain bikers. It's pathetic.
Wyn TV is an ESSENTIAL part of World Cup DH, and the UCI + Discovery better not kill it by cutting the rider count to 30!
Wyn is an amazing ambassador, spokesman and chronicler for the sport, and it would be a major negative to lose him, lose the privateers, and lose the privateer award. Be warned- there will be a rebellion and a new UCI independent DH series formed if it all goes to hell next year.
Oh, and you better figure out a way to buy Warner’s contract from RedBull!
I’ll pay to watch no problem. I understand a media company has to make money on the media, but just keep else everything how it is now. Figure out improve the rider purses and put more cameras on course and we’ll be even happier with paying to watch.
But make a botch of it like current EWS coverage, and make a lot of changes that are bad for the riders and bad for the fans and I’m GONE!
Agree with the sentiment, but I predict that whatever happens, you will not be gone, nor will I or most of the other close followers and fans. People were screaming murder when Outside purchased Pinkbike and some articles moved behind a paywall, but has that really affected the visitor counts? My impression is that the comment section is as busy as ever.
With the World Cup, Pinkbike held a poll some time ago regarding people's preference: show more complete runs of fewer riders or continue as it is now. Plenty of people (can't remember if it was the majority) opted to see more of the top riders as opposed to the alternative.
UCI and Discovery do have some options to grow the WC series and popularity of gravity racing while reducing the rider count in the World Cup, all the while maintaining a way in for smaller teams and privateers. They could for example make a certain number of entries at every event available for those selected through smaller series, such as the European DH Cup or other regional series. Those smaller series would (need to) grow in importance, but if they do, it would be for sure a positive outcome.
@mi-bike: I will need a pretty good reason to justify the money to watch DH next year. If there will be a lame guy at the microphone and only 30 riders to watch, I will rather invest this time in some riding than being absent from the family on Saturday and having to pay for it.
@squarewheel: You already only watch 30 riders. 60 in the final (plus a couple of protected riders that crashed in qually from time to time), but the "show" on TV is only 30 riders. If they cut to 30 riders in the finals, then that is bad for the fact that a 59 plate can come through to the podium, but if they are looking to speed up they day, then perhaps 50 would work???? So long as qualifications is open to a larger number, then people still have a chance of making the "show".
I've seen Steve Smith win there after the storm. It was CRAZY !!!
I've seen Aaron Gwin win there under the rain. It was CRAZY...
But this one...this one was INSANE !
Is it true a strong tail wind came on at the end of Finn's run at the finish or is this just tales. I feel Stevie was pushing him to get there with the broken chain at the end. Man, my allergies are horrible today and my eyes won't stop watering.
Agree, 3 of the greatest races of all time.
I love it, I think my favorite was after Snowshoe Gracie Hemstreet just kept giving 2 word answers and Wyn just kept asking questions. "For sure... yeah... definitely... crazy".
Really highlights what a community sport downhill is. The privateer fund is the obvious thing to point to but hearing Finn's mother saying thank you to Wyn helps understand his true reach in downhill. Legend.
I rode up the gondola with Finn when he was 15, great guy, and turns out he was living a block down from me in Banff when he was born, we used to start mtb rides riding right past his house to go poach our highly illegal freeride trails!
A bunch of us went to Canmore Brewing Co to re-watch the DH finals. The place went absolutely NUTS for Finn's run. Big ups to Brian at CBC for putting it up on the big screen.
Epic race, epic Wyn-TV and so stoked for Finn.
Also pretty cool to hear it from Revelli how it felt special to warm up with the guys you watch on tv, so humble
Wanted to watch this WynTV so hard! I think it was the most special race this year so far!
And very happy to see my comrade at WynTV as well. GO ROGER!!!!!!
Well deserved!
When Stevie won the 2013 overall, crickets.
It's partly familiar and partly ironic...
