It doesn't just "place them in another category from average recreational rider" it places them in another category from just about EVERY recreational rider.

Is it nuts? Those are pretty common margins in XC events, including world cups and world championships.

Review: The Pivot Mach SL 4 Blends XC Speed & Comfort
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: You've got the right idea, but it would work a lot better by only moving the decimal one place. Like you said, figuring these things out is tough. :)

U23 XC Results from the Mont-Sainte-Anne XC World Cup 2023
@sonuvagun: I've ragdolled myself through trees and rocks in races and not had a scratch on me. I've also had stupid little slow-speed falls that looked like nothing yet caused an injury that kept me off the bike for some time. That's all in the past though. Now that you've perfected the skill of diagnosing how badly someone is hurt just by watching, we can start saving money in our medical systems by firing all the doctors.

[UPDATED] Elite XC Results & Overall Standings from the Snowshoe XC World Cup 2023
@catweasel: Don't worry, I've seen all the lap times. You should probably apply some context here in your analysis. If you start around 90 riders as is the case here, or even double that number at one of the Euro rounds, the start time is based on the gun for everyone. So, the back markers lose a few seconds right from the beginning. Then, at the first singletrack, they will get all strung out single file. Consider how many seconds are incurred to the back markers to complete their first lap at the back of this pokey line, compared to the leading groups (of either women or men) which can materially inflate their early lap times. Lastly, you can expect a couple of tangles, crashes, and mechanicals during the start loop and first lap. Yes, their lap time may be slower in this isolated case which gets them pulled via the 80% rule, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are slower riders in general. You can clearly see from the lap times that even some of those pulled were running faster than Stigger for the first couple of laps, before encountering some incident, whether that is mechanical, situational (crash or tangle), or unexpectedly ill. Make sense? I'll give you one, in that I've never heard of "Robin Horsefield" and may this is a rare exception of someone who found a back door into a UCI Elite XCO with the minimum qualification criteria (sorry Robin, you may be bullet fast, I dunno).

[UPDATED] Elite XC Results & Overall Standings from the Snowshoe XC World Cup 2023
@catweasel: Fair enough, but what I was trying to hint at was that your interpretation - that 10 guys had slower lap times than the fastest woman - isn't really something you can tell from the results in the way they are listed, due to the application of the 80% rule that is used for UCI races. In fact, the slowest male rider in a men's world cup field is almost certainly faster than every rider on the women's side. That being said, as it pertains to our friend in this thread, IRL I've never any actual male elite rider who thinks it's a topic of any concern or interest to compare their speeds or lap times with female elite riders.
