Highland Mountain Bike Park Gears Up for Cannondale OverMountain Enduro Set for October 22, 2011 -Updated: Course and Event Format-

Highland Mountain Bike Park, America’s Premier Bike Park has teamed up with the leader in innovation and technology, Cannondale Bicycles to bring the OverMountain Enduro to the East Coast on Saturday October 22, 2011.

Highland has brought in the big guns in the enduro world to design this course; with input from Cannondale’s top riders and racers, Mark Weir, Ben Cruz and Aaron Chase; Dave Smutok and the Highland Trail Crew are delivering what is set to be a top-notch event.

“This event has caused me many sleepless nights trying to design the perfect event. After a great talk with Mark Weir, we made the decision to update the course and format; the new structure will make for a fun, challenging, and progressive event,” explains Dave Smutok, VP of Business Development at Highland.

Updated Format:
The race will be made up of 3 timed “Specials” which will be added into one combined time. Athletes will have start times for each Special and once a Special is complete riders will have a extended time limit to make their way to the next stage.

1st Special: Start at the top of the mountain and head down ODB to Threshold. Come down a new section of trail through the base area and into our XC loop.
Estimated 1st Special time is 6-7min.
After 1st Special you will have a short break to allow yourself to make your way to the 2nd Special.

2nd Special: You will continue on the XC loop.
Estimated 2nd Special time is 5-6min.
On completion of 2nd Special riders will have to ride the XC trail up to Easy Rider and continue to Highland’s summit for the 3rd Special.

3rd Special: You will start at the summit and race down a new section of trail/glade linking pieces of existing trails to the bottom finish.
Estimated 3rd Special time 4-5min.
Results will be based on the 3 Special’s times combined.
Climber’s prime – Riders who want to race to the summit can continue racing through the finish of the 2nd Special and to the summit. The fastest rider from the start of 2nd Special to the summit will win the climber’s prime.

hahaha we're lucky enough to have this on the east coast for once!

As much as we all love DH, the largest market segment is still the 5" all mountain bike. This format opens the door to get more people in to racing, and more people coming to resorts like Highland. Add this as a Saturday event to the regional DH series and see what kind of turnout you get. People may be more likely to stick around to watch the Sunday races too.

Just plan the courses so a guy on a V10 carbon or Session 9.9 doesn't win, add some uphill to the stages! I'd love to see special #2 end at mile marker 3. Then you really have to plan what bike to race with.

I 1000% agree! i was fine with the original format, but now i feel like it is still do able with a full on downhill bike which changes the face of the race completely.

Ending it at mile marker 3 would essentially turn it into an XC contest, that's way to much climbing for it to be considered an Enduro race. It sounds good as is, I hope there is a good turnout. There should be plenty of pros there with the big purse on offer. Weir should have the course dialed, but I heard that Jurgen Beneke has been training specifically for this event and is planning on taking him out!

Why are the stages called "specials", is that a european thing?

Turner what you have to understand is the rider rides from each stage to the next. So while it is NOT timed, the rider DOES have to ride from the end of stage 2 to the beginning of stage 3, which is up the whole mountain.

I agree with Turner, no need to change a great design

Correction.......... Weir is going to dominate. It has nothing to do with the Jekyll. Doesn't matter what he rides, he could win it on my POS.

^antmav. Have you ridden the Jekyll? Do you own a bike you can pedal? What bike? I just rode my new Jekyll carbon 2 4,000 feet down our local Gnar here in Jackson Hole and it's one of the best bikes I've been on. That's coming fresh off an Ibis Mojo HD Vivid Air/ Lyric 170 set-up. Don't hate if you don't know.

Not Hating, just stating facts. Weir has been kicking ass for years. Doesn't matter what bike he rides. Guys like Weir, Adam Craig and Brian Lopes are amazing athletes/riders and have excelled in our sport on many different bikes. Actually, I have ridden a Jekyll. I rode one at Highland Mountain. Sweet bike, no issues at all with the bike. I own an Epic, Pivot 5.7, a Jamis Xam, and a Sinister R9. I know about peddling, but don't feel the need to express to the cyper world about my last epic ride on my new carbon fiber, adjustable travel, blah blah blah..........and I also know you must be a complete tool if you feel the need to flex your riding muscles and describe to the world that you just rode 4,000 feet your local Gnar............To quote the Jerky Boyz, "I'm proud of ya".

Grutzmac, he didn't wrote anything like Jekyll is crap... He said Mark Weir can win on anything. And please stop using word "hate" instead of "don't like", I would really like to know where is it coming from this haters gonna hate... MTV?

It seemed like you were hating on the Jekyll and I felt compelled to defend that bike based on a fresh experience. I'm glad you guys are here to regulate the ends of the interweb with your rational and uncontrived wit.
