Conditions could be described as mostly awesome for today's seeding runs for the Junior X, Pro Women, and Pro Men's classes at Dry Hill in Port Angeles. It rained just a tiny bit during practice, but then held off for the afternoon, getting progressively drier as the day went on.
With no rain overnight it was smooth and fast up top with a touch of greasy loam on the bottom; it'd push, but wasn't blowing out. Speed control on the steeper sections, however, was tricky at best.
It's a tough crowd here in PA.
Kyle Thomas practices this morning...
Local boys Luke Strobel and Casey Northern. Casey is responsible for building a lot of the trails here, and Strobel is responsible for destroying them
Strobel
Ricardo Preciado came all the way here from Mexico to race the entire US series. "We don't have dirt like this where I come from," he quipped. "This is very different and not so easy for me."
Logan Binggeli rocking the stars and stripes
I haven't seen any Bigfoot around this weekend.. but I did spot Samsquantch in the pits today.
Curtis Keene living the American Dream, in PA.
Hidden in the Yeti trains pouring down the Dry Hill track was former World Cup 4X specialist Jared Graves. Graves worked hard this past winter to get back into DH form, and it's paid off with solid showings at South Africa, a win at Sea Otter, and a top ten seeding run here in Port Angeles.
Jill Kintner took a little time to clean up her bike before the afternoons seeding run.
Brendan Fairclough was looking fast this morning but had a bad crash on his seeding run and maybe out of tomorrow's race. Details when we get them...
Mick Hannah
Many are curious to know how Gwin will preform here this weekend. We will know tomorrow.
Josh Bryceland took the hot seat for a while today but had to hand it over to Steve Smith
Steve Smith put down the fastest time today
American pride is high this weekend here in Port Angeles. However, Stevie Smith qualified first today and will be a major contender for tomorrows finals.
Northwest flavor: warming up next to the campfire at the bottom of the PA DH track.
On the women's side it was Jill Kintner with the best time today...
...while Holly Feniak let us know her 2nd place finish at the first NW Cup this year was no fluke.
17 year old Lauren Daney rockin' a mighty fine pink Intense here in PA, and cruising in to the tune of 8th on her seeding run in the Women's pro division.
There is no lack of American pride here at Port Angeles. Wonder what was blasting out of that boom box?
With all this American pride it would be a little ironic if no Americans finish finishes on the podium. Maybe Gwin is saving it for the final but he didn't do great last time he raced here. Stevie is due for a big win, hope it happens, Remi is right there too
I don't know if it'd be ironic. The race is in the U.S. so obviously there are going to be a lot of people showing their national pride. It's no secret that you Canadians have way more DH and overall MTB talent up there so we try to be over the top about supporting our racers to make up for it. But I would love to see Stevie and/or Gwin up there though. Two of my favorite riders.
Katie Holden took a nice hit into a tree on her practice run ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ET-pZ_uCVQ&feature=youtu.be ) but got up and then raced the seeding run. She was a top sport about it too asking to see the video a couple of times, laughing her ass off, then getting back on the mule...
There is video of the crash somewhere, saw it in the pits. Hucked the steep section and tagged the tree at the bottom that a few others did. When we talked to him, he wasn't sure how bad it was. He got a box from us, so I assume he was flying home to have it checked out.
Hope Brendan injury isn't to serious, be ready for the next worldcup?
WTF is going on?....Mitch is a ripper.
