Words & Photography by Ian Hylands

Almost exactly a year ago I moved from Fort Collins, Colorado to Boise, Idaho to start a new job working with my awesome friends at Deity Components. I'd known Eric and Sadie for close to twenty years, and few of the other staff for at least ten, and I was stoked to work with them. I had some pretty big expectations for myself and what I thought I could accomplish in the first year, however due to Covid the year went nothing like I could have imagined. I'm sure your year was probably the same. I do feel like I accomplished a lot creatively in spite of all the challenges, it was just a little different than what I had expected. I had planned on doing more outdoor action photoshoots with Deity's team of amazing riders, maybe even a video edit or two. Instead I ended up spending most of my time in the studio, which was actually a beautiful experience. I'm incredibly grateful that I had the ability to work creatively in a safe controlled environment for most of the year, I know a lot of my freelance friends struggled hard this year.

Take a look through the images in this post and let me know your thoughts.

My first Deity project, the launch of the Lockjaw and Supracush grips. We developed a few creative ideas for them that didn't turn out as planned (one of them with jello) but ended up with these 'grips in clouds' images

The second Deity studio project, Deftrap pedals. Eric and I had developed an idea for the launch video based on a scene in Ghostbusters, and the photos just kind of evolved with that. The idea was that they were suspended in cloud of 'ectoplasmic smoke.'

I was originally planning to shoot with Tyler McCaul and Jaxson Riddle early in the year, but then the Pandemic hit and all of a sudden the rest of the year looked like it was going to be mostly about studio work. So I spent a lot of time shooting quick creative product shots and learning how to do new things with light. Luckily I work with an amazing group of people, and as things gradually began to feel a little safer this summer I started to shoot outdoors with some of my co-workers and a few other friends. Huge props to Jason Schroeder, Luke Bradeen, Silas Hesterburg and Eric and Sadie who all ended up in front of my camera this past year. Also Austin Henderson, Kirt Voreis and Jaxson Riddle. Y'all helped to make this weird year awesome!

In September I finally got a chance to shoot with Jaxson Riddle in Utah for a few days.

None of this would have happened if hadn't been for Eric and Sadie, I've known them for close to 20 years. I'm so stoked to have a job where I get to work with friends and create rad stuff every day. I can't wait to see what we do in 2021!

Ian, you were one of a few photographers to get my self and many other into shooting photos and paying with flashes from a very young are. Its amazing how this community has cultivated so much more then just the desire to ride bikes. Thank you for being such an influence on so many of us!

Thank you! I enjoy sharing what I know almost as much as I love creating photos, and Pinkbike has been great for both! Send me a DM if you ever have any questions, I don't check my messages as much as I should, but I get to them. Instagram ianhylands is usually quicker.

Massively inspired by your work @IanHylands. Excellent images around and glad you made the most of 2020. Deity has some of the best photo/social work going. Keen to explore product shots more myself in 2021. Would love to see some BTS of how you shoot your product shots

Thanks Denzil! It was a good year, although it took looking back through the whole year of photos to fully realize it. I'm lucky to be working with such an awesome crew at DEITY! Your Photo Annual post is amazing, so many good shots! I can't promise BTS from DEITY, we've decided to keep a bunch of that stuff private for now, but I post a bit of stuff on my Instagram and YouTube, and I'll be starting a Patreon shortly with more content and one on one and group discussion. Hit me up on Instagram DM if you want more info, or email me info@ianhylands.com. Also left a message on your post but will hopefully be making it to WA sometime once Covid restrictions are done with, I need to visit Over The Edge in Melrose. Maybe even put on a 1 or 2 day workshop.

Happy New Year!

Amazing photos @IanHylands, are you using strobes or speedlights in most of your setups? I am looking for something more powerful than speedlights but easier to pack up the hill than my AD600s. Any recommendations on lights and supports? Thanks.

@mtbpixels Thanks Randy! I'm using primarily the AD200Pro's in most of my outdoor stuff now, but I also have an Elinchrom ELB 400 and at DEITY I use a Profoto setup with B1x's. They're great in the studio, still haven't figured out how to incorporate them outdoors with my other stuff. They're too heavy to carry very far. I'll probably get and AD600Pro and maybe a 1200 as well. I love the Godox stuff right now! I post some lighting diagrams and info every (almost) Friday on my Instagram, and I'm starting a Patreon as well that will have more details and some group and one on one discussion of various subjects. Also my YouTube. Let me know if you have any questions!

Happy New Year!

@POWsLAYER Thank you! Feel like it's been forever since that early AM ride shoot in CO, we should do another some day, maybe with more sleep! I'm mostly well but still have shitty days now and then. Health is a process. Lets plan for at least a ride this year, are you still in Portland?

Thank you! You could wait to get lucky or you could just send me a message on Insta or something. I'm crazy busy but need to get out of the office for a ride every now and then. I'm close to the Eagle bike park so I ride there fairly regularly when it's nice out. Happy New Year!
