I didn't think he rode with brakes...
  • 25 8
 Yup, Gwin don't use breaks..

Can anyone on Avids ever really say with certainty that they ride with brakes?
  • 3 4
Kjones said it all . . hope to see that!!!

They're just regular saint levers with some prototype looking calipers from what I've seen. Looks like they went back to the drawing board after their little incident in leogang
  • 2 1
Is that a new RC4 he is sunning? I see the red stripe on the boostvalve kinda like the hybrid 40
I could be wrong
  • 11 3
Avid has the patented triple pump technology, so there!!
  • 35 2
whole Avid argument is kinda moot here since he is most certainly on Shimano brakes.

Shimano rotors, Shimano drivetrain... I bet my money on Shimano brakes Smile

 jmsxtreem, what happened at leogang?
  • 2 0
they are just chrome saint calipers.
  • 5 0
'Official' word from twr is that Gwin likes the feel of the proto levers hes been using, so he stuck with those. Then just before the 1st split his brakes had problems...

He wouldn't be the first to be dressed as darth vader... that honour went to swiss World DH Champion Philippe Perakis who was the probably the first DH rider to start wearing motorcycle quality full body armor as part of his riding kit from Dianese, in 1992. In fact it was because of him that Dianese setup a MTB armor division, and later they put him on the payroll as director of marketing. Phiippe was also one of the first to start wearing full alpine skiing skin-suits over his body armor (John Tomac was another who did that).

@Drood it was all over vital and I think here too, gwins brakes went out hardly into his run and he blew through a corner into the fish net
  • 2 0
never seen that happen on shimanos... which brake went out? hes got serious balls to keep on riding after if both went

  • 2 1
definitely shimano brakes guys it's plainly obvious just by looking at the levers
  • 1 0
Shimano all the way you can just tell and i think he should race in a Darth Vadar costume that would be sick
  • 7 0
@cretin82: ....of the mechanic or the bike? i'd guess 350 on the former and 30 on the latter
  • 3 0
i think this would be the only occasion in existence, where chrome stanchions could possibly look better than kashimaEek
  • 2 0
if he was running avid brkes he would be using boXXers not 40s, and how his bike looks sick, fast black, he lookms a bit odd on it with his red trek world racing topon lol
  • 1 0
americans get everything first now a days .. all the new films, game up dates, very nice custom bikes and now .. pregnant men O.O .. although thats kinda wierd
  • 2 0
 Brakes are shimano saint 2013
  • 62 4
You know what? Stuff like this just makes me mad. When we spend over $3000 on a bike, we should be able to pick a color, and a sticker kit. How hard can it be to give your customers the option?
  • 51 4
Dude, all you have to do is very simple, be World Champ ! Razz
  • 16 5
orange let you pick frame color and there new 322 looks sweet

custom paint coler sticker kit….
  • 2 0
Completely agree, that being said they can only provide so many colours before it because to tedious for the bike companies. But a standard color spectrum and sticker kit would be pretty sick!
  • 3 1
You can choose your bike colour & sticker kit on an Intense.
  • 2 0
 Buy from a custom manufacturer.
  • 4 1
Viellen Dank am das Propain Bikes. Looking for a DH bike for next season and it looks sick
  • 3 0
Yea, you can have any color you want......as long as that color is silver. ^^^^
  • 5 3
Why do you care what color your bike is?

Even for whatever reason that you do, if you were able to choose your colors I guarantee you that the bike would cost a LOT more than 3 grand, haha.

Plus you could always paint the bike yourself Wink
  • 5 4
 Intense all the way!!!!!!
  • 3 0
I want to see more fork colours, like some of the marzocchi enduro guys have
  • 3 1
carbon can be a bit tedious to strip and paint.... I was going to paint my commencal the old green colour but realized after a week I dont give a shit what colour my bike is which most people should find to
  • 3 0
If you had an idea of how supply chains work... then you would see how difficult it would. Quickly, they would have to sell directly, or reduce inventory to accomodate the customisation. Therefore they don't buy as much, they save less money, price goes up. That's why Intense asks you a couple hundred dollars for a "custom" paint, wich is still part of a pre selected pack.

ANYTHING BUT INTENSE. Just saw one of those SNAP in half on the top tube AND bottom tube. the only thing holding the bike together was cables. He didnt even do anything crazy. Just went off a drop fast.
  • 4 0
^ Yeah... maybe he should have checked his frame for cracks/damage before sending off that drop fast. That's poor ownership, not a poor bike.
  • 2 0
I've owned an intense uzzi for a while now and its bomproof! I have taken a good few drops at speed and never had a problem and I think you will find that with most intense owners.... All the ones I know all say the same, "they are bombproof good reliable bikes!!"
I've never known anybody's intense to do what you have described above? So its only down to one thing like "Scott-Townes" said poor ownership.........
  • 1 0

  • 7 2
High gloss black and silver, straight outta the factory, will always look completely sick. Its cheesy yet timeless. Bike, motorcycle, car, helicopter, airplane, tank, killer robot, or whatever. Too bad that Kashima gold throws off the scheme!
  • 5 1
The first photo...If Monkdawg is so great and loved somebody get that guy on a diet and some exercise. Not trying to be mean. The guy's gonna die soon at this rate if he doesn't make some changes. Kind of shocking considering his profession. I was a heavy teenager and got out of it so I can talk.
  • 1 0
hes probably stuck at that weight... also not trying to be mean but I doubt you can really ride much at all at that weight

  • 4 2
Hells yeah it was. Now that was some true color!
  • 1 2
 Actually not near as cool.
  • 2 0
But I gotta know...does anyone out there know? What does Trek (and similar companies) do with all this equipment (tires, bikes, everything) that get used by Gwin (and guys like him) after it's used and swapped out for the next new thing? I need to be at THAT auction.
  • 1 0
Most will end up in a museum/showroom of some kind,or will get snaffled by staff members/influential outsiders (journos etc).
  • 1 0
Or kept by the rider themselves, normally???
  • 4 0
Unlike Sam Hill's pink bike for breast cancer, this bike will be auctioned off at a fundraiser aimed towards making a Terminator style armageddon more attainable.
  • 1 0
This just occurred to me. You often hear about a pro's bikes being stolen and prototype bikes being stolen. Why not put a small GPS locator inside the frames? make it well known the locator is there, and only the REALLY stupid would try to steal them. but you'd find the bike and the thief.
  • 4 0
Every bike should have that! Not only the pro's
  • 2 0
you wouldnt even need a gps locator! just say its in there
  • 2 0
you just need a sticker that says "protected by ADT", and a red blinking light on the dash.
  • 6 2
Christ. How the hell does Monkey fit in an airplane seat with that keg he's got strapped onto his belly??
  • 2 0
i guess he drives, and when he's "overseas" he goes by boat...
  • 1 0
soz mate, meant to give that a Pos +, bit pissed atm!
  • 1 0
When I see things like this, or the custom jobs these guys gets for the World Champs I always wonder is they get a feel for one bike or if they can tell the difference when they get a full new setup. I know its the same bike and all the same parts, but I wonder if they get sort of get a feel for one bike if they ride it all summer (even if its only a mental thing). I mean does Gwin have to get a feel for this bike or "break it in" so to speak before he feels 100% comfortable? Or can ge just go blast it right out of the gate.
  • 1 0
I doubt he rides one bike the whole summer.... pro bikes look like they take one hell of a beating
  • 1 0
Well yea... I don't know exactly how often they change bikes, but I think my question would still apply. I just mentions what I said as en example. But he was riding the same brakes all year though as we found out so you never know.
  • 1 0
I'd imagine after the first 2-3 runs he'd be fine at the most, its only switching bikes completely that can mess you up a bit
  • 1 0
zink at rampage crashed, then switched bikes and won on a session88
  • 1 0
Maybe it's like when you get a new headphones, never sounds better when those was new
  • 1 0
actually headphones sound best when broken in.
  • 1 0
so do forks, brakes and shocks...
  • 2 1
Gwin could get used to winning on a big wheel if he wanted to.
  • 3 0
Nice bike, really looks so fast. Im worry abt mr Monk...look at his beer belly, abt to explode.
  • 1 0
they ought to tap that keg
  • 6 2
I still think Tippie's glow in the dark Rocky Mountain is cooler
  • 1 1
Guess he didn't learn anything at Leogang, new lever bodies but still running the same caliper bodies it appears. Not that I doubt Shimano's durability, but at the level and abuse he puts on things, I think he should run a new set of calipers.
  • 1 0
Does the stock session 9.9 have carbon seat stays? these look a little different. Also, does any one know what chain device he is running? Final observation, why does he not run Shimano pedals??
  • 1 0
crankbros mallet have a better feel to most riders... hell id be on them if i didnt bend wings so easily
  • 1 0
Yes, the stock 9.9 comes with carbon seat stays. The chain stays are alloy though. All of the high stress areas are beefed up with Intension.
  • 2 0
Would prefer matt black instead of chrome. But that's not really what sponsors want.
  • 1 0
Why is he not running the new saint ice-tech discs with fins?

like www.chainreactioncycles.com/Images/News/photos/shimano/saint2012rotor.jpg
  • 1 1
 because they failed
  • 1 0
Larry....It's because the rotors are only available in CenterLock and he runs Hope hubs.
  • 1 0
 i sit corrected
  • 1 0
i thought it was the levers that failed? mustve blew a seal
  • 1 0
Shame about the gold kashima coated forks xP plus, howcome silver and black anyhow? Why not gold and black since he's world champ!?
  • 1 0
he would of used silver if availaable....not seen them for 2 years he said
  • 1 0
C'MON no brake shots? Not hating or speculating but you know we wana see. Super clean bike. Where they guna mount the laser cannons?
  • 1 0
I was expecting something more. It is a nice black bike with silver stickers on it. Maybe if it was made from unobtainium it would have been worth the secrecy.
  • 1 0
Needs more gold. Pimp it out and I don't like pimped stuff.
  • 1 0
If I'm not mistaken, thats "Monkey" in the first pic. He used to be Missy Giove's mech back in the day. Met him back in 02 at Mt. Snow, super nice guy he is.
  • 1 0
Kind of looks like they just spray painted the pedals or something to match.
  • 2 1
Mmmm not sure if I like it, wonder if he is running prototype saint brakes after works champs
  • 1 1
Yeah weird. Both brakes fail at worlds and for the next race he gets a completely new build but with the proto brakes.
  • 1 0
Oh c'mon Fox you can't change up your coating color to match the Gwinningest athlete on the WC circuit?!
  • 1 0
 a black DLC coated 40.
  • 1 0
so anyone know is that a session 9.9 with custom paint .... or is it a different frame geometry ?
  • 2 0

not the newest proto ones? the mallet downhill is all metal..
  • 1 0
Definitely not he latest CB DH. They are all metal tho
  • 1 0
its weird how hes not running the proto all metal ones, they sound better with the q factor (allows clip out when you have your toe against the crankarm) and wider platform... why would he run the old ones?
