Jared Graves has been training this year
Jared Graves is positively skeletal after losing 18 lbs while tapering down his 4X bulk.

bigquotesI put a lot of days in on a road or XC bike, whittling the mass down. I love DH racing, but after so much time in the saddle this past winter I'm thinking I might give some of that enduro racing a go. - Jared Graves

Andrew Neethling s Rockshox Reverb dropper seatpost at Pietermaritzburg.
Look to see a LOT of these on bikes here in Peitermaritzburg; the course saw a few changes, but the 40 second long pedal fest in the mid section of the track remains unchanged.

bigquotesIt (the course) had a headwind on it this past weekend, and without a dropper post, you're easily losing 8-10 seconds... - Mick Hannah

Trek Mechanic Monkey with Willow Rockwell s baby buggy
Willow Rockwell was on hand with her baby. It took Trek Mechanic Monkey all of about 5 seconds to determine that it needed better suspension. "I can make that happen before Saturday, I think..." was his simple statement.

This rock was on track last year, and most racers hipped off the side. Now it's dead center of the fast line. Not anything really serious--that's later down the track--but a bit of notice that you really do need to pay attention to some sections of this track.

Extreme Caution
There was notice of a re-route from last year's track. Evidently a steep section?

Ah yes--a bit of steep was added to the track.

braking bumps on the Pietermaritzburg UCI World Cup DH track
Not everyone's keen on the fun bits; there are loads of braking bumps heading into the gap jump before the table.

The tables definitely got bigger--making them safer. But the sight every racer dreads at this point--the landing for the Dr Evil gap jump--is the long flat winding off in the distance below the tables. Last year pedaling that section was hell for me recalled Jared Graves. I felt like I was breathing glass.

bigquotesThe tables got a fair bit longer as compared to last year. The last one is massive--about 4 meters longer than last year. Last weekend, only myself and one other racer were able to clear it, so they shaved about 2 meters off of it for this race. - Mick Hannah

Mid way through the flat section I came upon this bit of trackside carnage. On a macro scale.

The worst bit about the pedaling section is this corner on the one hand you can see the end of the pain. On the other you know you still have about 200meters of pain to go.

fuck Graves has HUGE calfs!!! MACHINE!!!
  • 5 0
those calves are straight on TBone steaks. Looks like the hulk trying to get out of his legs
  • 7 0
Yeah, I love how Graves has supposedly lost a ton of weight and yet still looks more like a bodybuilder than a cyclist. His arms are bigger than my legs. Would love to see him alongside Dan Atherton on the Enduro scene. Reckon those two would kill it.
  • 6 0
If this is a world where Graves is "skeletal" looking like that then I guess hulk hogan is "average".

Awesome track! Sick how it goes through a field and the straight aways, but wheres tippie when you need him? COME ON

At least Rob Warner! and whats with the child slave workers?
  • 43 2
Dude, it's South Affrica, not Sierra Leone
  • 24 0
they're not children..and im confident they are also being paid or maybe volunteering
  • 13 0
can we get some good photos of these huge tables please?
  • 5 1
dude last year the pedaly section was all clear cut. its nice to see them planting new trees!!!! go hemp
  • 9 1
Remember what Cam said in Follow Me, Child Labor is the cheapest way to build jumps.

I was waiting for a comment like the one fom Danhillracer. They're paid, and well too, compared to the going rate for manual labour around here. And they're not kids. The "slave" labour thats been used for that track was building the 2009 PMB WC track and many others before and since. Myself, other riders and their parents put their time in, missing out on work to get the track to what it is, all for free. The last two years, riders have again pitched in and done much of the work, again for free, because after paying the guys you see above, there was pretty much nothing left in the budget! Frankly its a bit insulting that you would insinuate that.

Jeeez you guys cant take a joke, i would be STOCKED to be working on a world cup track!
  • 12 0
careful with colombian dude marcelo gutierrez (CG racing brigade) the guy is killing it on the pedaling section... hope to see some action on these tables!
  • 4 0
yes dude, Marcelo is riding very good, he have had problems with his tires in Santos, brazil, but i hope that he is going to rank
  • 8 0
its so insane !!!!!!!! this track is so nice

Tracey Hannah was in hot pants and you only got a shot from a far?!
For shame Wink
  • 5 0
That looks like sooooo much fun! Also, having the riders standing next to the features really gives a good perspective to how steep/knarly this stuff is!
  • 6 1

Minnaar pedals like there is no tomorrow and has proven himself again and again. Hart and Bronsan are fantastic riders but their weekness is pedaling. I say Minnaar will win in his home country.
  • 2 0
what ?!?...Troy pedals like a demon !!!...he pedals hard where most riders are just happy to coast...
  • 4 0
Damn straight... Troy pedals in the air. Minaar pushes big gears tho
  • 3 1
Troys a little guy...he pedals the little ring.

Got to give the edge to the big guys when there's strength/pedaling involved.
  • 1 0
 we'll see Wink
  • 1 0
Of course we will...that's the great thing about racing.

I would love to see Troy win a race this year and he very well might do just that, but if he does, it won't be b/c he out pedals anybody.
  • 1 0
if Troy wins in PMB it WILL BE because he out pedaled everyone, just like Gwin destroyed everyone last year...btw, Gwin is only 5'10'', 165lbs...not big at all !!!
  • 1 0
Gwin is a mutant. He carries speed like a big guy and floats like a little guy. He is also in the upper deck as far as training & conditioning on the World Cup circuit goes.

I would consider 5'10", 165lbs to be ALOT bigger than 5'5", 130lbs.
  • 5 1
that track looks awesome, i would like to be one of the guys working on it... good luck guys!
  • 5 0
Woop! I missed the daily WC updates on PB! Excited for this season!
  • 2 1
I hope this time around there isn't the crazy anti-nationalism like there was last year. I proud as F*** that an American did so well. It seems that lots of other folks resented the fact that Gwin did so well and Americans were proud. It got downright Ugly and hateful. If your British rider wins brag! If your French rider wins Boast! If your Australian rider wins gloat!. Be proud of your nation and its riders.
  • 6 0
true but, does the nation make the rider.......?
  • 3 0
So much whining and bitching about the pedally section. I like it, its a kind of throwback to early downhill and it gives the track character.
  • 5 1
nothing like breathing glass for the weekend.... my money is on Hill!
  • 3 5
you have not seen that gazzoloti 3.0 tire around hill's waist i take it.............?..............
hill will be waaaaaaaay off the back this weekend.
  • 2 1
Hill is not the best pedaller, this is not his type of track. I agree, Hill might not even hit the top 10 with the emerging young talent gunning it.
  • 2 0
I can't see the emerging talent doing as much damage on this track, I think it's still gonna be guys like Minnaar, Gee, Peaty, Hannah and Gwin (pretty sure he counts as emerged by now Razz ) who have the power in the pedalling section. Smith and Bryceland were both top 10 at PMB last year tho, so maybe they'll be pushing for the podium for sure. It might not be a track that suits Hill on paper, but last year he was 8th and in 09 he was 4th, so he's definitely able to put the pedal work in on this track. Just depends where he's at with his fitness.

But as always with the first race of the season, you can only really guess where everyone is going to be. It's definitely going to be an interesting race!

Danny Hart needs some sun. Them some fast, wimpy-looking legs.

Does anyone know if RedBull will be streaming this through the RedBullTV app or if I'll be able to stream it live via iPad? It's the only computer I have and I don't want to miss out?

hopefully, pinkbike does a countdown for the race and provide the link where we can view it.
  • 5 0
It's been posted a few times, at the moment the only place to view it will be http://live.redbull.tv/events/25/ucistop1-1/ starting with the women at 5:15 AM PDT on Sunday. You can figure out the rest of the times from there. If anything changes we'll let you know, we'll have a post up about it a day or two before...
  • 2 0
It would be cool if Pinkbike posted U.S. times (i.e. PST, EST etc) for fans that don't understand how to convert. Although I know the conversion, Ive been reading many people sort of confused about air times. just a suggestion.
