James Doerfling pins it across Gee's gap from Rampage 2010. This year more than few people stuck this, and Doerfling almost makes it look easy here in his qualifying run, despite of the wind. Take a look at the flag blowing...

People asked me if I saw the football game Sunday... I said "No, did you see Rampage?" They look at me funny and I laugh. "You have no idea, go watch your fooseball!"

I workd all day the Friday and Saturday before rampage drove all night Saturday and made it to Utah Sunday morning to make my first rampage stayed for the whole thing then turned around and drove back in time for work on Monday. Best experience ever! Can't wait to kidnap my friends from back east and go next year!!

That Redbull flag blowing about wasnt caused by the wind,it was caused by James Doerflings Redbull wings

"Never would have expected somebody" from the other side of the channel to make him laugh? Sounds like somebody is holding a grudge against the people on the "other side" of the channel.
  • 4 0
@Wad1 ,well pointed out ,don't they usually call it "le manche" or something similar, doesn't sound quite as good.
@fr112358,it's a European thing,we say the same about the Germans,(most of whom i've met are a cracking laugh),

Thanks Redbull and all other supporting companies who made the rampage possible this year
Most people would agree when i say the judges should have been "coordinated" with their scoring from the get go.
but let us not forget that this years rampage was stomped down in history, and just insane in my books !
  • 6 1
Doerfling is a class rider! PS Get better soon Cam!!
  • 5 1
I agree the judges were shite

I live in greece and here we dont have so many trails or jumps.
When i sleep at night i ride an imaginary trail.
I feel so happy and then i wake up and moments like this reminds me why i love riding even if i ride a small trail with jumps made from roten wood.
Freeride/downhill of slopestyle is not like football or
basketball because if start riding a bike you will never stop
and it will never disappoint you. I believe many people thinks
like me and we are not crazy we are the new age of ardenaline junkies Smile

i know it hasnt been mentioned here yet but.................................................... i love how everyone reckons that those suntour rux forks will be crap, make a note that doerfling snapped a set of boxxers attempting this in 2010
  • 2 1
Actually he snapped a set of bombers Wink
  • 3 0
Fox 40 actually. But Gee was riding the same Fox fork and rode away.
  • 9 0
I better stick this, not so sure my super protectant tank top will be enough to save me.
  • 6 2
Watching Cam Zink go down was crazy. that was one of the worst crashes i have seen from a jump and all he did was bruise his heels? That guy is literally a king in my book! Probs to everyone in the rampage. They all have balls and all have some amazing talent!

I was out to support James at Rampage this year. Funny conversation with James and Chris Glew when it was time for James to head up for his first run in finals. Conversation went like this.

Chris: "You want me to have one of the Redbull people haul your bike up for your run?"
James: "Yeah that would be good".
Chris: "Where do you want them to take it to?"
James: "Tell them to take it to the scary part".

Back in the olden days when Louis Armstrong was just days away from going to the moon, he looked at the pictures of the unknown world and thought hey, that'd be some great terrain for riding! He brought his ancient Kona Stinky up there and in fact did a transfer much like this one (notice the flag on the moon if much like the flag in the picture, despite the wind) Later - back to earth now - after going for a great lunch at Booty's House of Crabs he wondered if he could find terrain as good as what he found on the moon. He then spent 2 years travelling the world trying to find moon-like zones (I think there might be a movie about it, "Where the Trail... something) and found the best of them all - Virgin, Utah. Years later he got Red Bull to sponsor this competition which he named "Rampage" (Riding At Moon Part Also Great Eating...It sounds better in his native language...) and then he bought Kenny G's saxophone and rode a horse to New Orleans. True Story.

Yeah and remember when Louis Armstrong serenaded Neil Armstrong when they landed on the moon together????

James's Mum: What did you get up today James?

James D: Oh you no, just another boring day in the office.

James' Mum: What else....

James D: Dug around in the desert then sent a massive mammoth sized gap. Not much really!

James's Mum: Glad you had fun :-)

I remember the first rampage in 2001, it was so wild to see guys hitting these lines! It blows my mind today when I see what they can do in the Utah desert, but back then we hadn't been desensitized to the madness that is big mountain riding yet.

The thing that really blew me away in 2001 was a fearless 14 year old Kyle Strait manning up and stomping it to take the $500 prize for best trick! The boy had HUGE balls at such a young age! And how about those bikes.... Yeah, awesome!
  • 1 0
Just drives home the point further of actually how skilled all of these guys are, Doerfling especially. Awesome to see a sequence of some really technical riding like this, sure does take a lot of confidence and guts. Respect!
  • 2 0
 Riders meeting before qualifications.
Todd Barber: "Take care guys there is a lot of wind, it will be difficult to go right when jumping!"
James: "Not a problem, I love going sideway!!!"
  • 1 0
My first trip to Rampage and I have to say that this is not just ballsy riding - these guys know exactly what they're doing! We rode the old Rampage site and within 30 minutes one guy broke his collarbone and another guy broke his arm!! You can't just go out there and be like Doerfling - Mad props to all the riders - oh ya, my comment.... Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling! Doerfling!

 Off The Beaten Path:
As the desert air greets you from the moment you step into its realm, the smells, the desert dirt, it all hits you with such a high frequency you cant help but be humbled and a little nervous. The cliffs tower water is scarce and for a moment even if your surrounded by a crowd you feel alone. As I rode into the rampage site I was excited full of suspense, what would it be like who would I see what part of me would be changed as a rider and as a person. I peadled as hard as I could through the ever changing desert terrian and decided to take a line that looked like it leaded into an alternate singletrack route. Five minutes later I found myself west of the acctual trail alone and in the bottom of a gully and even though I knew I was off the beaten path I would arrive eventually.

Once apon a time there was a man. This man was a air seeker. He searched all around planet earth for the best dirt air combination. With this combination a boy was created. His name is James Doerfling. THE END

Redbull Rampage is the best event when it comes to mountain bike freeride. It is the event that every mountain biker should work up to so that it can keep growing and they can continue to have an event in Utah!

I could write a book on the things that went down at rampage this year. We drove out from California, checked into our camping spot, collected out shower tokens and bounced to ditch the 9pm quiet time and loads of families. We went out and rode the old rampage course. We watched people break themselves off like you wouldnt beleive. A wrist, a pinky, and a collar bone. 3 people in one hour. Then Lance Canfield (LEGEND!) convinced me to ride the ridge. I knew it could be the best or worst ride of my life, and I made it down unscathed. It really was the best 5 minutes of my life. The dirt there was like nothing I had ever ridden. We watched qualifying where McCaul sent it HUGE. We chilled with Gee Atherton and Smith (who had already broken themselves off for the week) The Red Bull staff were all awesome and we were mind blown by how unrestricted the even was. Once a line was clear it was game on. Riders would pass by within inches of you and then send off some of the biggest drops I have ever seen. We camped out with a savage crew of people from all over the country and I took a few of the best photos of my life. (desert night photography in utah is EPIC) Finals were rad. A few beers with Lacondeguy and photobombing NBC like mad was hilarious. Antoine Bizet was so STOKED that we got stoked. He gave us about 50 high fives each and said "I cant beleive it" about 30 times. It was finally time to head home, but not before a quick stop in Vegas!

As soon As I found a place where the cliffs broke in height I threw my 40 pound Trail SX over my back and hiked out to a vantage point. As the sweat started to break my heart pounding and the overwhelming anxiousness set in I pushed harder through fiery red and brown Utah dirt to mind myself feeling as if was floating on air. When I crested the ridge and stood on top of the canyon wall It presented itself before me as if to say you are now able and have earned Ramage! The ridge lines seemed endless the walls sheer and it shined like Beacon Of Glory! You have never seen something quite like this it cant be tamed, built or broken it can only be expierenced. As I threw my leg over my trusted steed we rode twoards this beaconing beacon to nurse our spirits evermore. When I arrived and valeted my bike in the endless array of other peoples dream ships I ran twoards the bottom of the comp grounds just in time to see Kyle Norbraten's run. 3,2,1, dropping as he flys down the ridge line coming in and out of sight to the first cliff drop and throws down a majestic 360 I absolutley scream and cheer in excitemet to see another opposite 360. I said to myself I have just wactched one of my favorite riders throw down my favorite trick in my home state. When he came down the bottom and pulled the goggles off I yelled NORBYYYYYYY!! I have finally arrived.
