Val di Sole Qualifying - UCI World Cup 2012

by Ian Hylands
It's going to be an interesting race tomorrow, in qualifying today Aaron Gwin and Emmeline Ragot both were fastest by almost 8 and 7 seconds respectively. Is that a sign of things to come or were others holding back? Check out the times below, and be sure to come back tomorrow morning to watch the race live on Pinkbike at 5:15 AM PDT.

Gwin absolutely flew down the track.

Both number two riders had something to prove coming home seconds ahead of the other qualifiers.

Come on Paul Bas! You can do it!

 But this isn't a DJ?!
  • 1 0
Damn... A few years before, you would have seen Sam on the top with the same kind of time than Gwin...
  • 3 0
It's Paul Bass you fuck-wit. If you're going to make a joke spell his name right.
  • 37 1
Beaumont 1 sec ahead of Gee... could this be the race where he breaks out of the Atherton family shadow for GT Race team??
  • 9 1
 I hope so Big Grin
  • 22 4
That only can happen if you consider him to be in the "shadow" to start with. Having won the World Cup here in 2010 I think he should be one of the favorites...
  • 21 2
I think he's referring to the way that Marc has been portrayed by the GT team branding and press release... i.e. on the team logo there are only 3 silhouetted people instead of 4.
  • 2 0
yeh it's still team Atherton. Not Team Atherton.... and Marc Beaumont.
  • 29 1
So glad for Marc, proving he doesn't deserve to be the "adopted atherton"
  • 16 2
wow! gwins new 40s definitely don't have grease ports, they must have rocket boosters instead.

 DNS* dislocated finger
  • 2 0
Dislocated his finger in practise today so he's resting it for tomorrow.
  • 3 0
can someone please explain how qualifying works? If Steve doesn't qualify, then how can he race tomorrow? Why lay anything on the line if qualifying only affects the order in which you race? I'm confused.
  • 5 0
top 20 are protected in quali
  • 2 0
 Just got word on facebook.

"Unable to do my qually run today due to a dislocated finger in practice this morning. Hoping it will be decent for tomorrows race. We'll see."
  • 3 0
Don't they also get points towards the overall championship for their qualifying runs?
  • 3 0
Protected = gets to race regardless of qualifying position or attendance.
Why qualify? - points earned count towards overall standings. Also, serves as a practice run with a bit of pressure against the clock with a (in theory) clear course in front of you.
  • 6 0
smart move by Stevie. Rest it today, rip it up tomorrow.
  • 1 0
 Common Stevie, you've got this!
  • 1 0
I think the protected riders have to start their qualifying run to get a race run. Pretty sure they can ride out of the start hut and duck straight under the tape. This is why Steve bothered to start his qualifying run.
  • 10 0
 Richie Rude killin it!!!

Who said that Gwin wasn't very good on steep, techy tracks last year? lol It looks like he's just seriously rapid everywhere.
  • 5 1
Who said that. He did well last year with a massive crash...
  • 8 1
Whoever said that should instead have said "Aaron Gwin is so god-damn smooth that it looks like he's going slow, on steep, techy tracks. And almost everywhere else."
  • 3 1
There were a few nay-sayers, I'm not just imagining it.
  • 6 1
PMB over and we hit the real Dh.... Gwin is a machine.
  • 1 0
Johnny T must have a secret method for Eli and Aaron. Aaron's gotta be on a moto regimen workout. I think gwin was 9th in the speed trap so you know he's still holding back. Gwin is scary rapid.
  • 9 2
Gwin is killing it! 7 seconds over Minnaar :O

And its going to take you about 250 million years to catch up. Thats when Pangea will form again and we'll be running roughly on the same time.
  • 10 3
I'm still waiting for Sam to claim the win like he almost did back in 2008
  • 7 0
there's no motivation for sam to pull out the stops like he did back in 2008: this aint world champs. I'm a huge fan of his, but after the last two seasons of injuries, i'll be happy if the boy can focus on fitness, and ease himself back into his awesome self.
  • 6 0
what happened w Mick Hannah ????
  • 2 0
my thoughts exactly. Hes waaay faster than that time.
  • 5 1
Obviously some guys are holding back. Times will drop and Gwin'll get a run for his money I'm sure.

Who's streaming the race day stuff this year - I assumed it was going to be on the Redbull site like South Africa but cant see any indication they have it showing this weekend. Anyone know where it can be found? Links please!
  • 1 0
It will also be here on Pinkbike tomorrow AM 5:15 PDT
  • 1 0
If I go to Pinkbike at 5:15 am to watch it, are you already going to have a big headline up announcing the winner?
I believe this happened last time . . .
  • 2 0
We'll have the post up or at least a link to it in the next few hours, that way you can bookmark it and not have to go to the home page. Results will be posted as soon as they're received, so if Red Bull does the same thing and delays the women's coverage then the results will be posted on the home page before it's shown on the "live" feed, however we won't be putting the results in the headline.

Strange, Aaron Gwin would come down 2x and still would have 39 seconds when the last guy (slowest) reaches the finish line. This means Gwin would come down 2x and he could eat his food in the Hot Seat while watching it Big Grin . No offense, i was just thinking a bit.

i dont think so, as she didnt qualify in a points position
  • 1 0
She is a protected rider, so if she starts her qualifying run, which she did, she gets a race run tomorrow. I know the top 20 men are protected in this way, I don't know how many women...

 Hope Sam does well

OH c'mon! 7.6 seconds! That's unbeatable - Minnaar can not pull that time back. Gwin will need a crash at that gap.

flag reinholds (Jun 2, 2012 at 10:32) (Below Threshold)
If you ask about why Gwin won't win, it's because he's isn't pushing his 100%, while Greg is, therefore crashing or doing mistakes. If Greg will pull it together, he'll be faster then Gwin. It's like in MX championships, there are those who calculate points, and ride always in safe zone, and then there are those who are all out, crash, win etc. Don't get we wrong, Gwin is f*ckin quick, I'll never ride as any of those guys, but I favor Greg and few others because of their crazy nature and style. That is what bit CG back, but that is what it's all about. It's my opinion, and its not meant personally.
  • 8 1
 So wrong....
  • 3 1
Greg is one of the last people I would say has crazy riding..
  • 1 0
I'd agree with you in principle reinholds, but the top riders will tell you, the points awarded at quali can make the difference between 1st and 2nd at the end of the year. Greg is not wild - so much experience - he is perhaps the smoothest flowing rider out there. The top guys are all going for it now. If at the end of the season, no one has a chance to move up, then they might think twice about sitting comfortable and not risking injury.
  • 2 0
Right, I agree. Sorry for being such a gibber, was at work, didn't put much thought in it, and sometimes envy kicks in. Greg is smooth, but he is still taking a lot of risks while riding. Well again, they all are freakin crazy on what and how they do, I just admire and hope that one day I'll be able to do 100s part of it... Cheers!
  • 2 0
I wouldn't say Greg is crashing/making mistakes often... I think he's only missed 2 world cup podiums, in the last 3 years!
  • 3 0
Greg takes less risks than just about anyone else out there. Which really says a ton about how good he is.
  • 1 2
Apparently Greg's pedal fell off and he still got second. Nuts.
  • 2 3
 Minnaar crashed!
  • 1 0
 Did he?
