Video: Matt MacDuff Is As Creative As Ever in 'Rotation'

We all know Matt Macduff for being no stranger to imaginative riding and pushing the limits of what's possible on a bicycle. During the initial Covid lock down, Matt had been visiting his folks in Eastern Canada when he uncovered an old sketch book with some wild ideas from his past... creations from his childhood and teenage years that then seemed like a pipedream or unattainable at the time.

'Rotation' is the product combining just a few of these ideas from Matt's imagination and turning dreams into a tangible reality in a one-and-done continuous hand-built trail in BC.

"After locking in my partnerships, I’ve been looking for an opportunity to shoot a project on the Norco Sight and showcase the abilities of Maxxis and Industry Nine products. I truly love riding trail, and after we finalized our location, I was able to assemble my dream team to make it all happen. The whole project provided a tremendous amount of personal growth, and I look forward to using this as a platform for the future. Thank you Industry Nine and Maxxis for the support and opportunity to express myself." - Macduff

"Over the 2020 Christmas holidays I opened a dusty note book from my early 20's. In the pages I came across a bunch of old stunt concepts, including this giant toilet bowl! I thought, wouldn't this be so cool to ride? But how do I build it? I knew there was only one man for the job. Dylan Sheffer. Together we built the structure in 6 days using nothing but nails and chain saws."

Mixing the technical precision of his origins in street riding with high speed trail riding

This pocket was actually an old log on the side of the trail left by loggers to decompose, every time I hit it, it got better and better!

The Loam was deep, and the trail was always changing. Every ride was unique to the last. I hired Ben Byers to put in the single track and was blown away by how he used the land and the natural terrain.

really cool, and maybe just my monitor, but I found it really dark and splotchy and hard to tell what was happening?

yeah...video was incredibly hard to see. I shouldn't have to squint to figure out what I'm watching. The pictures had much better contrast. That said, the "shell" berms (dirt and wood) were super cool.

@SATN-XC: yeah the resolution was low too. Cool video though.

The dark look is very cinematic.

 It's the Snyder Cut

 Very hard to watch

could be youtube buffering. I watched it 4 hours after your comment and it looked great to me!

I think that was the idea....

Mon Dieu! - what was happening was awesome, fast riding and cinematography consummate to the riding. Edgy and fast. Mad props to Matt and the whole crew!

Should have cleaned it after the Redtube session champ.

Nope, not just your monitor, nor is it "buffering" issue: the whole production is very dark & they cranked the contrast through the roof. Most frames are either too murky or shot through w/ blown out highlights see what is going on. I'm all for visual artistry, but someone made a terrible production decision that effectively deleted most of what Macduff says he wanted to express through his riding. What a shame.

part stylistic choice and part trade-off when you color correct for super-saturated image. I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of this was filmed in pretty bright summer light, coupled with the forest settings, so when you try and fix this some of the image gets really dark.

@atauro: not buffering but YT will downgrade resolution by default for sure.

judging by the soundtrack choice, they were going for that high contrast, dark and gritty look.. to make it more cinematic. I get it, but i also did have a hard time even seeing what model of bike he was riding. Im guessing its a Sight, but i cant tell 100%

 @deepstrut: He's on a shore I think?

I honestly kinda like the dark aspect even though he's hard to see. What makes it cool is that in a bunch of spots Matt suddenly jumps out into the light. I think what would have helped things though is having a wider shot in bunch of places as I found some of the vid to be focused too tight on the rider and combined with the darkness it made it a bit hard to focus on what was going on. Lighter clothing might have helped too though. Definitely creative and liked the circus aspect to some of the features.

Well that checked all the boxes. Riding, visuals and audio are top notch. Amazing work!

Does it swirl in the opposite direction south of the equator?

Dark couldnt see much....some dirt flying around and some woodies.

When the editor seems to want to outdo the rider and features... Love Matt McDuff but hard to enjoy the riding...

Tricks and creativity of the riding easily a 10, but the video and editing were terrible. I feel like they just threw every little MTB video edit trick at it. Tree shot check, roost check, slow mo check, follow cam check, etc check..... let the riding to the talking.

Wow! The hard corner gap over the trail was amazing to behold...and looks just like a number 9!? Most enjoyable.

That's a perfect feature for me: Circling the Drain.

As an absolute shit rider, I'd feel right at home on that feature.

i was surprised! I couldn't see it well but he went around twice right?
  • 12 1
If this was in NZ, would riders have to circle in the opposite direction?

Trail bike Matt is just as sick as DJ bike Matt that we all fell in love with.

That was pretty awesome. Loved the editing, the track and the tricks. 10/10

Super cool but why is it a one and done trail? I see there are some features that you wouldn't want people getting hurt on but they could be modified, ridden around or removed.
  • 3 0
 Well then. That was cool.

Great to see this guy showcasing his natural bike skills, style and talent long after a crash that almost killed him and most likely took away his confidence. Well done Matt

This look like CGI movie, and I love it, the colour so unreal. Video of the Year for me. Shut the front door

Drone footage sucks so much to watch. MTB video technology should have stopped with the Anthill camera zip-lines.
