Video: Industry Nine Adds Volume Adjustment Knob to its Hubs [April Fools]

Apr 1, 2020 at 1:57
by Industry Nine

Introducing the latest i9 innovation – the Hydra Frequency Adjust Ratchet Technology. Whether looking to ride in silence or want to make your presence known on the trail, the all-new adjustable Hydra drive mechanism is Bluetooth connected for on-demand tuning.

Ranging from “silent but deadly” .5 db, to “blackout inducing” 150 db, the latest Hydra technology is tuneable for any riding condition. Just be careful, cranking the Frequency Adjust Ratchet to 11 is not suitable for all riders.

.5 db is pretty quiet, is this compatible with Autocratic world leaders? Asking for 8 Billion friends.

 Hail Hydra!

 Let's ponder one thing.
Each 10dB of volume increases power used to generate the sound by a factor of 10. Let's assume that stock hydras use 1watt and produce 50dB. Which would make them pretty darn loud. At 150 dB it would take 10^10 watts or 10 GIGAWATTS of power. Comparable to FIVE Hoover dams at maximum power.

That would not be "deafening" that would be literally earth shattering.

And with that much power you'll be able to time travel at only 8mph instead of 88mph.

@bigtim: Great Scott!!!! But how much garbage will the flux capacitor require for time travel?
  • 4 0
It just under half of three gorges in China or 3/4 of Itaipu in Brazil’s capacity. Or your typical nuclear plant.

@uzurpator I think you may be mistaken with your thoughts process. Sound is based on a log scale, but not in the way you describe.

pesky trail runners? Just kill them with pure sound, on demand, with your phone.

@dustyduke22: And 150 dB of sound pressure is not even remotely earth shattering. There are sound systems than can hit over 170 dB, and as far as I know, none of them have left any craters.

@dustyduke22: The idea behind the analysis of @uzurpator is right, just his base condition that you would need 1 Watt for 50dB is off... If we assume you're listening to the hub from a meter away, then measuring 50dB corresponds to roughly 10^-7 Watts of sounds energy. So 150dB would correspond to about 1000 Watts of sound energy, or roughly one Dick Pound of energy. Still a lot, but not Earth shattering

Can we have anything louder than anything else?
  • 3 0
Wait for next years version. I hear they have a new pressure sensitive system. Deadly silent as long as you are rolling on the ground. But as soon as you are in the air the volume instantly goes to TWELVE! Then deadly silent the moment you touch down.

Don’t volume spacers achieve the same result?

Heard that you have to install additional vibration resonators on all frames that these hubs go on to avoid loosing your dental filings.
