The road to NW Cup's sixth round at Steven’s Pass in Washington was clouded with smoke from Canadian wildfires that have been burning out of control for weeks now. Luckily, the Wenatchee River provided some relief from the heat as we stopped to jump in the water and clear the smoke from our eyes on the way up to the venue.
The first morning of practice on Friday would be the clearest skies we saw all weekend as the smoke continued to move in and the dust began to get kicked up from the hundreds of racers that would descend upon Steven’s Pass for another awesome weekend of racing.
The lift line started to get stacked up as more and more racers filtered in throughout the day. Stevens Pass Mountain Resort (@stevenspass) has done an amazing job of turning this ski area into a legitimate bike park. The @stevenspassbikepark has everything you could ask for with great lift access, rowdy trails, and a fun atmosphere.
There are fun games for all ages including this life-sized chess board, bag-toss, mini-hockey, and disc golf. With something for everyone, the vibe is definitely all about having a good time here.
The pumptrack was a highlight for sure. Riders of all ages and skill levels were stoked on this feature as they practiced their lines and got faster and faster with each lap. This is a great way to build confidence and bike handling skills as well as providing an insane workout for riders and prime time entertainment for the spectators.
There was never a dull moment in the base area as it was buzzing with activity all weekend long while riders took breaks in between practice laps and spectators wandered around checking out the scene. The upper deck patio was a great place to chill and soak up the vibes.
The parking lot was also buzzing with activity as people went back and forth to their camps in between practice runs. The after party in the parking lot was definitely the place to be at the end of each day as riders returned from ripping it up on the trails and getting their lines dialed in for race day.
As usual, the raffle was a crowd favorite and Kali Protectives came through with some awesome prizes including a handful of the new gloves, a stack of T-shirts and four helmets that went out to some lucky folks. Kali is proud to participate in these events and support all of the racers who lay it out on the line every time!
A parting shot from lower down on the Cat. 3 course as this little ripper was leaning hard into the corner on his way to the finish line. Watching the younger riders is always a fun part of the event for me. This is the future of the sport and the future looks bright!
What is the Kali Race Support Program and who is the Road Warrior? In an effort to support events and racers of all levels, Kali Protectives has launched a new Race Support helmet demo program in conjunction with the Kali Road Warrior.
We all ride and unfortunately, crashes do happen. Sometimes that happens at an event or race weekend, resulting in your helmet being damaged and unsafe to continue to use. But you have more racing to do. What now? When the Road Warrior attends a scheduled event, registered racers/attendees have the opportunity to demo a new Kali helmet at no charge. Kali is on hand to ensure riders can continue to compete without worrying about their helmet.
Currently, the program is limited to the West Coast, however, we are preparing to launch another Road Warrior and Race Support Program in Canada. Providing this initiative continues to be successful, we may establish Road Warriors in other territories.
If you would like to learn more about the Kali Road Warrior or possibly schedule him to attend your next event, shoot an email to kaliroadwarrior@kaliprotectives.com.
