If you were at the Sea Otter Classic 2017 and visited us at the Pinkbike booth, you might be wondering just how much Richie Rude's, Aaron Gwin's and Julien Absalon's bikes actually weigh?

We teamed up with YT Industries, Yeti Cycles, BMC, Alpinestars, Troy Lee Designs, Giro, Smith, and Assos to reward an Aaron Gwin, Richie Rude or Julien Absalon replica kit to three lucky contestants.

Calvin and Ben from Park Tool came by to help with the official weigh in, and here are the weights and the winners!

Actually really surprised how heavy RR's bike is. Especially considering that Gwin's bike is only a pound heavier.

Huge difference in weight btw RR and J. Absalon's bike.

 Weight wienies need not apply.
  • 1 0
 No kidding
  • 4 1
Larger cassette, tube, dropper is probably what does it.
  • 2 0
very surprising. though the spare tube is a good chunk of a pound right there.
to quote Graves:
"a heavy bike is a stable bike"

Rude certainly has the power to throw it around.

I'm having trouble of thinking about what could cause it to weigh so much... 33lbs without a coil is hefty!

@bridgermurray: Tube, tool, dropper, 36... there's lots of heavy shit on that bike. Carbon on a 6" bike is less about weight and more about ride quality, at that point. And as @yetiking303 said, RR has plenty to make that bike do what he wants.

Also, it looks like RR's bike has pedals, while JA's doesn't. That's worth more than a pound right there.

@scvkurt03: All good points- I guess I was just shocked because a normal SB6 Turq with an XT drivetrain and aluminum components weighs in at around 29lbs. Richie's got the legs to push that thing uphill, that's for sure.

@bridgermurray: Looks like he's running a DD Aggressor, too. I think Enduro riders are taking weight penalties in places where it provides a bit of insurance that if stuff goes wrong, they're not SOL for the whole race.
  • 1 0
 DD's front & rear...close to 5lbs in rubber (2220g).
  • 1 0
@serathestaii: Yep. I ran some WTBs (Tough, High Grip, 1150g apiece) and Flows with similar numbers, then went carbon and EXO and dropped 1.5 lbs of rotating weight. The difference in feel is astounding, but I'm in constant fear of tearing a sidewall.

 Real weights:

Gwin's DH bike: 34.31 lbs
Rude's Enduro bike: 33.00 lbs
Absalon's 4Stroke: 22.75 lbs

Lol I was thinking the same thing, so are they going to retract the prizes???
  • 14 0
Ummm .05 lbs and 05 ounces are two very different things.......
  • 1 0
next you'll be telling me that 2:30 pm isn't 2.3 hours after noon.
  • 6 0
me and RR have the same weight bikes, he must just have his speed set a little higher. what's the park tool pn for the speed adjust?
  • 3 0
The RG-1 (raised glazed) works perfectly for decreasing speed.
I have no idea how to go the other way.
  • 7 0
Is that 34.05 lbs or 34 lbs and 5 ounces...
  • 3 0
oz, the gauge has it labeled haha
  • 2 0
@KimBrennan - There are no flippin' pedals on Absalon's bike!
Add 11oz for XTR SPDs: that makes for an actual weight of 23lbs, 7oz.
I'll take my Assos kit in Large, & the Giro Synthe in Medium.
So excited to win, thanks!!!

Thanks to pinkbike and the other companies involved, it was a very random guess to be honest
  • 1 0
Wow, Im actually way less impressed than I thought I would be. I had an aluminum (V2) V10 that only weighed 36. No air susp. And when the Carbon came out I was in the ~34lb range regularly.
  • 3 0
I makes you wonder how much people are fudging their weights when they say their enduro bike weighs 28 pounds ready to ride.
  • 1 0
Well, it's very easy to find out by throwing it on a scale. My SC Bronson is under 30 lbs with pedals. RR bike is running DD casing tires which are crazy heavy.
  • 2 0
Richies bike is almost as heavy as my aluminum Kona. Must have dual ply tires on?
  • 1 0
Saw his bike in my LBS just after sea otter, was running double down casings
  • 1 0
@bluntastic: Double down plus flat tire defender or cushcore. 1up crank protector too
  • 6 3
Richie rude- 5'11'' Medium frame 33lbs Aluminum wheels... Go f urself
  • 1 0
What's amazing to me is the weight of that full sus XC bike. With a dropper!
  • 2 0
But Absalon's wasn't even weighed with pedals
  • 1 1
I thought 4 strokes were heavier...
