The cockpit of the new COAL is very clean designed.

The new Coal excels at descending! Carrying on our tradition in enduro optimized mountain bikes we build a bike made for the most challenging terrain. From year one we trust in progressive kinematics for an unmatched responding characteristic, good mid-stroke support and reserves when you need them. The coal is designed for a lifetime out in the wilderness. Less time in the workshop and more time on the trail is our promise.

Geometry – Last Coal

The coal performs great on race tracks when efficiency counts and on the utmost challenging descents where you don´t want to ride against the clock. The slack head angle, short chainstays and the further improved sizing are taking safety and control to a new level.

The new LAST COAL.

The main improvements in short:

– longer top tube: plus 5 mm reach for size L, plus 10 mm for size XL
– shorter seat tubes for all sizes: 370 mm, 380 mm, 414 mm and 482 mm. Allowing you to use the newest generation of dropper posts with extended travel
– lower standover height, giving you more room to move and more safety riding on the edge
– shorter head tube providing a lower stack for frame size S

COAL frame sizes.

Taking into account the biomechanics of the rider we use a size specific actual seat tube angle to create an effective seat stay angle of 75 degree that makes pedaling more efficient and comfortable.

The suspension system of the coal is highly progressive. Featuring sensitive responding characteristics at the beginning, good support in the mid-stroke and plenty reserves for whatever madness you can imagine. Set up correctly it is almost impossible to bottom out the coal. Using the latest technology for calculation and simulation we were able to create a linkage driven single pivot system that eliminates the need for volume spacers in modern air shocks and therefore works perfectly with a linear coil shock too.

A clean frame design.

While forks up to 180 mm travel are allowed, it is recommended to use a 170 mm or 160 mm fork to fit the 160 mm rear travel. The geometry shown is based on 27,5” tires and a 160 mm fork.

Last Coal

The coal frame is compatible with rear hub, featuring the 148 mm wide Boost format. With an alternative derailleur hanger and adapter for the disc brake side, the frame can be converted for 142 mm wide hubs. As longevity is very important to us, the through axle nut is replaceable and even the integrated post mount threads can easily be replaced by a barrel nut that fits into the pockets machined in the drop out.

Bearing seats.

Generously dimensioned premium stainless steel bearings by Endurobearings are used for all pivots. The full complement style sports more balls, this results in a higher load carrying capacity and higher radial stiffness.

We hide the derailleur cable right under the chain protection tape.

The linkage of the COAL provides it s progressive kinematics.

Manufactured from high-grade aluminum, the coal frame will handle stress and strain easily. Passing our rigorous test procedures, the frame is suitable for applications described in ASTM category 4. Equipped with tough components, the complete bikes we offer are ready to compete in the toughest races or simply shred the bike park all day long.

The rear end of the COAL fixed in the CNC machine.

Machining in Germany provides us access to latest machining and tool technology and allows us to reach the extremely high standards for the bearing tolerances. Measuring each pilot hole and using an algorithm allows us to position the bearing axis perfectly. Besides the bearing seats we machine the threads, the contacting faces and the shock mount on the 5-axis machine, making sure all interfaces match perfectly and the frame is not tensioned up when the assembly happens.

The new coal is available in four different builds that we can modify to your specific needs. Regarding your size, weight, riding style and the intended field of application you can choose between different shocks, stem, handlebar, tire and wheelset configurations.

Just want to plug Last Bikes for making a wonderful frame with the Coal.
I have one, and I've been totally blown away by the performance of the rear suspension, super sensitive and highly progressive, works perfectly with my DVO Jade.
Last Bikes is a company that I feel is highly under rated, and deserve more recognition for making something 100% their own, which works very well without any unnecessary marketing gimmicks.

Really appreciate them doing things properly but I do wonder to what extent the tolerances are noticeable in real life. I have a YT which has pretty sloppy tolerances (visible by eye even) but my bearings have almost two full seasons (ie including fall/winter) on them but they are still spinning decently..

That depends on what area of tolerance you were talking about. If it's like you said, the sloppy tolerance can be seen by eye, that could be frame alignment tolerance, CS or SS clearance alignment. As for the tolerance of bearing seat, that's the discussion between 0.2~0.3mm difference and the difference won't be able to be seen by eye. If the bearing seat is too tight, the rotation of bearing would not be smooth. If it's too loose, the bearing won't be able to seat inside the bearing seat properly and will cause play. You were actually talking about 2 different things.

Didn't even know Last were still going! Looks tops
