Video: Finding New Zealand Backcountry Gold in 'Mystic Mountains'

by Tom Booker

Feeling like a change from the big smoke of Crankworx Rotorua, we chose instead to head towards the unknown. Hidden deep in the alpine region of Arthur's Pass lies Craigieburn - where alchemists have transformed the rolling landscapes and deep loam of the native beech forest into that of trail gold. The caliber of trails and sense of adventure you feel while riding there leaves you with nothing left wanting, but with the onset of alpine rains we were forced to leave Craigieburn with unfinished business.
Fortunately we were able to head towards blue skies on the coast where we were greeted with some flat out riding in the recently re-instated Christchurch Adventure Park and found some hidden trail gems tucked away in the hills surrounding the port town of Lyttleton.

Riding places like these truly capture the transcendental experience of exploring on your bike - we hope this video captures some of that energy too.

 Guys, tone it down at Craigieburn. There is serious threat to trails being closed here due to damage, and vids like this of destroying berms and building little kickers is not going to help.....leave that for the bike park

 Correct me if Im wrong but the section of scree where they throw a sizeable boulder down is above the access road-a long way above but still above it.In all probability the rock wouldn't reach the road but are they to know that...probably not.......

 Both throwing a boulder off a bridge into the river and rolling one down the scree slope is absolutely irresponsible and dangerous, I'm having a hard time wondering why @Pinkbike would allow this post.

 @Kiwizak: I'm having a hard time wondering why they were behaving like that!!

 @Kiwizak:
Agreed. Fewer videos of dickheads like this please. They're not doing anything good for the sport here. Craigieburn is an amazing place to ride and I'd hate for it to get taken away thanks to irresponsible behaviour like this. Sad.

 Rad times by the looks of it lads.

Some protection company needs to help these dudes out with some knee pads (says the ever cautious 36yr old).

 Just like surfers always running to the water like the waves are going to stop forever, these guys don't have time to put pads on because the trails might vanish! Well shredded boys
