It's no secret that while Kamloops is known to be one of the most beautiful, and throughly amazing places to ride a bike it also has some rugged rough edges. The city and surrounding area has spawned many of the world's best known professional mountain bikers, one of which being Mountain Bike Hall of Fame member Brett Tippie. Brett is known for being very open about his past dependancies to a hard partying lifestyle, and is now dedicated to helping others through the sport he loves.

It's this love of Kamloops and commitment to helping others through the positive experiences of biking that lead Brett to team up with the Phoenix Centre to bring youth from around the area the Out of the Ashes Into the Dust bike camp. The Phoenix Centre is a non-profit organization that offers services to people who have or are affected by problematic substance use in the Kamloops and surrounding area. They decided that taking a proactive stance to drug and alcohol dependancy by promoting a bike camp that would be a preventative option for youth in the community; giving them another option by introducing them to the wonderful world of mountain biking that sits right at their back door.

Little did the campers know that not only did they get an amazing coaching staff but also they got to keep the bike they were given to use! This in the hopes that they would have access to a bike after the camp was over. Phoenix Centre would love to continue this camp, creating an annual event for youth in the area which runs off of donations. So if you are a passionate mountain biker looking for a worthy cause to donate to this holiday season you can help Phoenix Centre continue their camp by clicking here .

Atta boy Tippie. Way to pay it forward from your past experiences. Much respect to all who donated their time for this event.

Great sounding program and smart business model. I wish this program all the success in the world. We need to devote a lot more time to our youth at risk populations, and what a great way to do it by introducing healthy lifestyles through MTB and the outdoors. I was in a similar line of work for years and it is some important, rewarding, and incredibly difficult stuff.

I've been a PB lurker for a while now, but I came out of hiding to say this is a great comment. It's such a great sport once you can give it a try, and exercise is such a great upper. If we had something like this in Utah (maybe we do and I have no idea), I would love to volunteer some time to a program like this. It makes it easy to donate your time to this cause, because everyone here is so passionate about biking.

Thanks man! I too have been reading and lurking for a long time, but this is something that struck a cord with me. I'd love the opportunity to volunteer some time to such a program as well. It's humbling to work with at-risk, and post-crisis youth populations. This work is so important yet so underfunded and poorly understood. Teaching kids from adverse backgrounds the value of an active lifestyle can have SUCH a dramatic affect on their future, and the decisions they make later in life. Look into it! You'd be amazed at what exists in your own community, and the number of kids in need of such a program and the horror stories they have lived through.
