BMX Pro Corey Walsh Comes Out As One of the First Openly Gay Male Cyclists
You might not need to know because when you were growing up you were represented in media. Corey coming out is significant because he is representing the LGBTQ+ community for all the kids in the sport

It's news because the LGBTQ+ community is so poorly represented in professional cycling. As a gay man Iwish that Corey's public coming out didn't have to be industry news, but somewhere out there is a kid riding bikes that is more comfortable with who they are after seeing themselves represented in the sport.

@castbreeder: you clearly don't personally know a member of the LGBTQ+ community. This is not a self centered post, but a really brave step to be a representative of queer people in cycling. Somewhere out there is a kid riding bikes that feels more comfortable about who they are because they see themselves represented in their sport. It would be great if this wasn't necessary, but comments like yours prove that we aren't quite there yet

You might not care and that's 100% all right, this post really isnt for you. Public figures don't come out as gay for shits and giggles. This post is for the kids that don't see themselves represented in the sport, and to give them confidence that their sexuality won't be a barrier to entry to the cycling community.

As a young gay man in mountain biking this is significant to me. I'm at an age now where I can stand up with confidence of who I am, but when I was younger even recently I was not well represented in the media in general, especially not in my sports, and that makes coming out a more significant and scary process. To many people this might seem unnecessary, and we would certainly wish it was, but posts like this give queer kids representation of who they are in their communities. Somewhere out there is a kid riding the skate park that feels more comfortable about who they are because someone at the top of the sport relates to them. Fucking be gay, ride bikes, and rock on!
