 2 ride ticket is $8 for competitor's.

Not sure if this vid is old, but at 40 seconds that pipe at a 45 degree angle almost killed me flying into that section LAST YEAR around August. Pretty hilarious if that is a new video.

yeah, that pipe always sketches me out.

Cool idea. Reminds me of being a kid and Wednesday race night at the bmx track. Round robin heats, but really it was just high intensity practice for regional races and national qualifiers.

Mammoth should be the next WC DH Race. Gwinn and KHS would own.Haha.

 Gwin vs Bingelli!

In every video I see of mammoth it always looks really bleak and colorless for some reason... Weird
  • 5 1
That is because it is bleak and colorless up there. Not weird.

Mammoth is super dry during the summer and the mountain is a volcano so the dirt isn't like soil or anything
  • 5 0
Mammoth is the result of massive volcanic activity. The whole area for miles to the north and east is a giant active caldera (called Long Valley, I think -Google it) that many geoscientists predict will eventually erupt, covering the entire LA Basin in life-strangling ash. So yes, the earth is different than you may be used to - it came from beneath the crust. Toxic gasses sometimes kill trees and even campers if they chose an unlucky spot. Mammoth is the Anti-loam.
Embrace the bleakness, but don't roll around naked in the obsidian.

@endlessblockades: so when is it predicted to erupt? Not for a long time I imagine?
  • 1 0
 @FALCONPILOT:

Just google: long valley supervolcano hazard or similar - there is tons of info.

If I had to predict when it will blow, I'd guess it would be after I won my first Cat 1 DH race there, but before the awards ceremony.

@FALCONPILOT @endlessblockades : totally random late response but the Long Valley Caldera (Mammoth) is one of the most likely to "blow next", I can't find the article but the one I read last year I think had it at the top of the list, above Yellowstone / etc. I worked there in the 90s for a ski season & volcano eruption was part of our training, which basically went something like "if there's a volcano eruption, we're all dead". Oh good times. Rad place to ride bikes, mx, skis or snowboards though!

@valhallascott: HAHA Great employee morale booster. I heard they've had real estate value issues there off and on depending on what's perceived to be bubbling underground - def make me think twice (if I could afford to think about a vacation home).
  • 1 0
@endlessblockades: yep, for sure. If you can buy at the bottom up there, it's a great place to own... the vacation rentals will pay for the mortgage, just don't get stuck when the bottom drops out. Prices dropped 70+ % up there when the last bubble popped!

Great place though. Love it up there.

That looks so fun! Does anyone know if there's anything like this (i.e. free DH race series) up in the northeast?
  • 1 0
is there different categories? and is there prize money for winning?
  • 1 0
no, its a low key, have fun, drink beer race.

As stated above, unless you are hiking your bike up to the top of the trails, I don't think the lift ticket is free. Just a great way for Mammoth to get more people on the mountain. So it is a $60 race fee, or whatever they a charging this year.
  • 2 0
@Peregrinebikes: Yeah thats true, but its a full day of riding in the park, and a free race which builds experience. its not like you are paying just to do a race run.

You don't go to mammoth for a free bike race. You go to mammoth to ride the park, free race included. I went up there last year to ride the park and we happened to be there on the day of one of the races and it was awesome! Since the races are pretty close to the end of the day you get to do all your trail riding out of the way before ending the day with a quick race. The post race deals on drinks/food at the bar in the village were a nice touch as well. http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/12376340/

that rare feeling where you can outride a bike park edit... Not sure if this was intended to appeal to beginners or if I'm just being an ass
  • 11 2
 YOUR AN ASS
  • 11 0
 *you're
  • 3 0
I don't think you're considered a beginner if you can make it down this thing- Hell if you even attempt to ride it I don't consider you a beginner.
  • 1 2
@bridgermurray: well maybe beginner was the wrong term to use, but there is certainly a wide spectrum of riders out there and this guy is on the beginner side of it.

I just found it unusual to see a course preview/edit done by someone of this caliber...this video doesn't show any of the primary features of the upper section of this trail....by going left you are skipping the only fun techy section of the trail which is really an intermediate feature at best.

That said, had he at least hit the upper section, I guess it's better that he rides everything slow so you can actually see what the trail looks like if you've never been
  • 1 0
@nvranka Gabe Taylor can probably outride everyone on pinkbike on a snowboard, I'm guessing he's just starting out riding bikes
  • 2 4
Race may be free but getting to the top isn't. Sinking that hook in nicely Mammoth
  • 8 0
Dumbest remark I've read on pinkbike today, good job.
  • 1 0
Yeahhh pretty sure that the idea is that you'll be riding the park earlier in the day and will already have a ticket
