Bike Check: Sam Hill's Nukeproof Dissent Carbon

by Nick Bentley

Round 2 of The British National Downhill Series saw so many top-flight riders come to Fort William ahead of World Champs in August. But one name jumped out of the page when I got the start list and that name was Sam Hill. The man, the myth, the legend. Sam was back on a Downhill bike. I mean that's enough to get anyone excited, but when that bike is one of Nukeproof's new Dissent Carbons it was an opportunity we could not miss. So I sat down with Sam's mechanic Jacy Shumilak to get the lowdown on Sam's latest Nukeproof DH bike.

The Dissent Carbon has just been launched by Nukeproof this month and the bike was pretty new to Sam. Chatting to Jacy there was a lot more firsts going on with this bike. This Dissent is running mullet and that's a first for Sam on a DH bike, as well as that it's the first time Sam has ridden a Carbon Nukeproof DH bike and a long time since he's been on a carbon DH bike. Add to that the prototype suspension that is on the front of this bike, there has been a lot for Sam and Jacy to work out and by no means is this set-up a finished product.

Model Name Details
Frame: Nukeproof Dissent Carbon
Shock: RockShox Super Deluxe Coil Ultimate
Fork: RockShox Boxxer Prototype
Wheels: Nukeproof Horizon v2
Tires: Michelin DH22
Drivetrain: SRAM XO1 DH
Brakes: SRAM Code
Cockpit: Nukeproof Horizon direct mount stem and Sam Hill signature handlebar and grips
Size: NP2
More info:Nukeproof Dissent Carbon

So let's get into the details of Sam's Dissent frame. First up: size. Sam is riding the NP2 Dissent frame which is their equivalent to their medium. The Dissent has plenty of adjustability built into the frame with plus and minus of 6mm reach adjustment in the headset. From what I saw it looks like Sam was riding the bike with plus 6mm on the headset. The rear swing-arm on the Dissent Carbon can be changed from being able to run a 27.5 to a 29" rear wheel by simply inverting a flip-chip on the rear triangle and swapping out to 29” or 27.5” rear wheel. Adjusting this flip-chip compensates for the new wheel size and ensures the kinematic and geometry are not compromised. This was set in the 27.5" position for this weekend. The next bit of frame adjustment is the adjustment in the rear chain-stay. This allows the wheelbase to shorten or lengthen by 5mm, but in Sam's case, the rear axle is set in the centre position. On top of this, Sam has a custom team paint job on his Dissent.

photo

The new Dissent Carbon has a recognisable shape to the previous aluminium versions, and that's no mistake. Even down to the fact that parts from the existing Dissent Alloy will transfer to the new Dissent Carbon frame, making it easy for current owners to upgrade their frames if they wanted to.

photo

photo

The bump stops on the side of the Dissent hide internal cable entrances.

photo
photo

For the drivetrain, it's all SRAM for Sam with the SRAM XO DH 7-speed groupset being used.

photo

Of course, at the end of the carbon SRAM XO DH 170mm cranks we find a set of Nukeproof's Horizon Pro Sam Hill enduro pedals. I mean it's Sam Hill's bike after all!

photo
photo

With SRAM being a title sponsor of the Nukeproof SRAM factory team, it's not exactly a surprise to see Sam running a full SRAM drivetrain. It's a pretty standard set-up, however, with a SRAM 7-speed DH rear cassette and a 36T SRAM front chainring.

photo
photo

The brakes are shiny new and they are SRAM's new Code brakes with the new levers. Sam is also running a 220mm SRAM rotor at the front and a 200mm on the rear.

photo

Brake set-up is something that Sam is really particular with (I know we all like brakes that work), this is something familiar that I hear a lot from pro-riders. Next to suspension, brakes are one of the parts riders are really picky about. But for Sam, it's all about lever position. He has it set relatively close to the bar reach-wise but with a short throw on the lever.

photo

Cockpit-wise, it's a full Nukeproof setup for Sam, with the 50mm direct mount horizon stem holding a set of Sam's signature Nukeproof bars to the top of his Boxxer forks. Sam has his bars cut to 750mm. Sam is using the 38mm riser versions of his signature bars.

photo

Running the rear 200mm of travel of Sam's Dissent is a 2023 Rockshox super deluxe coil. Upon this is a RockShox 450lb spring. There are no crazy settings with Sam's shock. The low-speed compression is set slightly open. Other than that, Sam has all of his settings on the shock right now set to the centre position. That being said, Sam and Jacy were running telemetry all weekend trying to work out the best possible set-up for Sam's bike.

photo

There isn't too much they could tell me about the new Boxxer fork out front on Sam's bike other than he has no tokens in the fork and was running 130psi and -8 on the rebound from the centre position. One thing I will say when I rode the bike across to shoot it, Sam's Dissent is super supple and running really soft.

photo
photo

Wheel-wise it's a mixed set of Nukeproof Horizon wheels with a set of Michelin DH22 tyres. Sam doesn't run any tyre inserts, for pressures he has 23 psi in the front tyre and 28 psi in the rear and he's running tubeless too.

photo

Interesting to see Sam uses some grip tape on his saddle to give him a bit more purchase on wet days, not that we saw any rain this weekend in Fort William.

photo

Sam's build is finished off with his own signature Nukeproof grips.

Big thanks to Sam and Jacy for their time to do the bike check during a busy weekend for both of them trying to get the bike set up.

Review tomorrow of the Sam Hill signature model exfoliating saddle?
  • 17 1
He's been experimenting with different ways of getting more grip on the saddle. I recall he also used a piece of tire on the saddle. Even though this one looks friendlier, I expect it will eat your pants faster.
  • 5 0
@vinay: allows you to scrape off the “mud” from your white riding pants before getting to the bottom
  • 4 1
@Dem628: White pants in the wet are gross.
  • 4 3
@Dem628: Downside of these old fashioned "analog" bikes. Those with pedal assist just integrate a vacuum cleaner in the center relief channel.

@vinay: sweet sweet vacuum cleaner relief channel

I hear that Sam Hill has an itch that only his saddle can scratch.
  • 26 0
Upon closer inspection, it’s made by Selle Itchtalia.
  • 1 0
Sam tested a number of saddle modifications, but he always managed to wrecked ‘em =P

Not nearly as awesome as the sdg sam hill saddle.
  • 2 0
@brassinne: Ahhh yes, the Sam Hill SDG (Sphincter Damage Grippers) saddle!
  • 1 0
@vinay: he had his own SDG one with rubber bits on it back in the day too
  • 2 0
Its clever to put a minipump on the shock ,
  • 1 0
@vinay: why do you need grip on the center of a DH saddle? I could understand grip on the sides maybe, but the top? you almost never touch it!
  • 1 0
 Sam Hill Manscaped model.
  • 1 0
@moroj82: We need to ask him. I only push against my saddle. Maybe also against the top when the bike is tilted in a corner so the inside leg doesn't really push against the side but against the top. But yeah, never looked at it that closely.
  • 1 0
@Compositepro: that way they can passively pump the coil
  • 1 0
@therealnobody: It is the other way around. This way they can inflate the pressure tank for the new Shimano Airlines gearing. The frame is the pressure tank. You do need to keep shifting in rough terrain though as when the pressure buildup becomes too high, it will launch the seatpost. SpaceX will call that a success, no matter how painful.
  • 1 0
@moroj82: I kinda wonder too. But Sam isn't a 'ride off the back' kind of rider, so he must know something we don't know.
  • 27 0
Since I hit my ribs with the metallic bar plugs many years ago, I stop using them and I prefer lock-on grips with rubber at their side. By the way,the bump stops on the side with the internal cable entrances are a very clever idea and all the manufacturers must addapt it.
  • 5 0
commencal got them in their supreme v4 (2015). They look neat!
  • 13 1
It’s pretty common and has been for a while
  • 2 4
These type bump stops only work with dual crown forks.
  • 7 0
@fabwizard: i mean you dont really need bump stops with a single crown in the first place or do they have a second purpose?
  • 1 1
 @Veltron: actually some bikes do.
  • 1 1
@fabwizard: Unless you're afraid of your front wheel doing an over-rotation, a single crown fork doesn't need the stops. The stops are to protect the stanchions and the frame from contacting, which is only an issue on double crown forks.

Quite frankly, they would be an annoyance because they would limit wheel movement when trying to load the wheel inside a vehicle, where you sometimes turn the wheel 90 degrees.
  • 5 0
@nickfranko: you mean like knock block

Some forks will contact frame
  • 2 0
 My M16C has this too.

Just want to say thanks to Sam for signing our kids tops and taking time to have a chat with us in the pits in fortwilliam. I was slightly star struck (fan boy), but it's so great to see him back on a dh bike. It made my kids weekend having his signature!

No Shame fanboying with a certified legend

I'd like to see Sam, Gwinn and Minnaar make top ten or better this year. I always love when Minnaar lays down an unexpected heater. Looking forward to seeing Sam do the same. Go old dudes!

Eyeball calipers can't quite tell... anyone think that boxxer has 38mm stanchions?
  • 8 2
yes it does, rode with connor fearon this weekend, he has the same

@wburnes: for when you want to race, but not podium.
  • 22 0
@Whataboutism: tell that to Sam Hill’s 13 World Cup wins, 3 dh world championship wins, 6 EWS wins and 3 straight EWS titles.
  • 6 0
@TheSlayer99: That was 99% Sam Hill

 @TheSlayer99: 2010…times have changed.
  • 5 0
@Whataboutism: and the saying is still true. I usually don’t argue with stupid but here we go anyways. Sam Hill’s last EWS title win was in 2019, and he was 10th last year at sugarloaf EWS. Dan booker and Connor fearon were on the podium of the EWS this year on flats too. Dan booker was 5th at round 1 in last year and was 8th this year in round 2.

 @TheSlayer99: 5 examples since 2019. Staggering Facts!
  • 6 0
@Whataboutism: 5 more examples than you've had, even in your dreams.
  • 5 1
@Whataboutism: considering how few riders uses flat pedal, 5 exemple is statically relevant really. Bring this number in proportion to the number of riders using flat pedal on the circuit and you can go eat you hat.
  • 1 0
 @jamieridesbikes: classic SRAM
  • 1 0
@TheSlayer99: Yes, Sam Hill is even recorded saying it.

But how many flat pedals have won medals without Sam Hill?
  • 1 8
flag Whataboutism (May 15, 2023 at 5:52) (Below Threshold)
@Balgaroth: so every podium and title since then has been been on clips except 5. Winning on flats at that level is not the norm. Sam Hill is a bad mofo, no doubt but numbers don’t lie. Clips win medals, this isn’t 10years ago where the fields were more even on pedal choice. Calm down it’s okay.

 release 38mm BOXXER please
  • 3 0
Maybe next year? Strange they didn't address this earlier, it does feel flexxible compared to other bigger forks.
But honestly, I'd get it even just for the looks... 35 looks out of place
  • 1 0
@freeridejerk888: really? Not up to date with the rumors, figured it would be out already if they wanted to release it this season
  • 1 0
@Code98: I heard it was spring then they didn’t wanna do with the axs and the brakes. But who knows. It’s all rumors lol
  • 7 1
Bummed to see they have gone to carbon only moving forward. Been trying to get an alloy dissent 297 XL frame for over a year now. The new bike is gorgeous. I just don’t want a carbon dh frame.

Ok, which joker put the back tyre on 180 degrees off from the front tyre?!
  • 1 3
Looks like one of the tyres is on backwards. Better braking maybe?
  • 1 1
 @endorium: Sam Hill Voodou
  • 3 1
I think it’s a logo issue I checked the direction arrow on them and the tyre is on right to that
  • 2 0
 @Mandownmedia: thanks for telling them
  • 4 0
@endorium: backwards tires brake worse because the rolling edge becomes the braking edge. Not sure why people think this would be the case but have heard it multiple times. Maybe it’s just because the top of the wheel makes it look like that would be the case but it’s 180° different at the business end
  • 2 0
Ha! good spot. Bet the mechanic is livid now
  • 2 0
I think both tires are correct. Michelin logos are huge. You need to be blind hehehe.
  • 3 0
@homerjm: They aren't back to front, they are rotated 180 degrees. The logos are printed so that they are bot readable when aligned right, but some one aligned the tyre to the valve on the front tyre correctly, but on the back tyre it is aligned to the 'upside down' logo, so in this well set up photo with the valves at the bottom of the wheels, the Michelin logos are upside down on the back.
  • 2 0
@bigtim: Michelin logos are mirrored, just that simple. But yes, someone did not care and align the valve to the opposite logo in the rear tire.
  • 1 0
i'm looking at the first pic, that can't be a boxxer, it's too thick, then again, there's rs stickers on it, i must be shitfaced again or sth. and then i read someone finally remembered boxxer needs thicker stanchions

isnt it amazing... "cheap" wheelset - no inserts - as it should be.
HZN v2 wheels proving they are awesome again, Love when people tell me their 4 digit wheels are a requirement.

que the people who always flat that cant ride their bike properly.
  • 4 5
Those wheels are dogshit. I’d put money on him running a different rim from what they actually sell. Blew up a front and a rear within a month of owning them
  • 20 0
@TannerValhouli: how much money do you want to bet? Very happy to take it.
  • 2 0
@TannerValhouli: Mine have been solid on my Enduro bikes for the last 12 months - taken alot of bike park smashing.
other than the Spank 359's and the new dt swiss rim, the hznv2's are the best bang for buck from top alloy rims.

i did break one rear hub axle at 2 months on a huck to flat but Wiggle quickly supplied a new one and Paid for it to be rebuilt, Been fine ever since.

see the last part of my first comment, maybe that applies to you.
  • 1 0
@AlanMck: Sam Was Seen all weekend Riding his bike with v2 wheels and has been running them since we first seen him back on a DH bike.
  • 3 0
Those Michelin tires had a crazy thick carcass, the sidewall is by far the most resistant of any DH tire. It is almost like ridding any other DH tire with a light insert in. Those are hard to pinch flat. I think I would break my rim and those DH 22 would survive 100% hehehe.
  • 1 0
The EWS team switched from DT Swiss to Horizon V2 the year after they were launched. Does anyone have any inside info on how they fared? That should settle it...
  • 2 0
@HeatedRotor: I'm sorry but I prefer the evidence I have provided and my shed full of broken HZN rims and those of my friends Smile
  • 1 1
@HeatedRotor: I snapped a hub axle as well, after I laced an fr560 to the hub. And then they wouldn’t warranty the axle because I didn’t have the original rim. Crap parts and company
