Most people have an opinion about e-bikes and often it fails to consider the bigger picture. Sometimes you just need to hear A Story Like Steve Winter and his opportunity to rediscover something thought to be lost. E-bike access to trails is a highly debated topic for many reasons. Please go to Peopleforbikes.org for possible solutions, conversation starters and more.

Thanks to our friends at Specialized Bicycles and Fat Tire for helping make this project possible.

You shouldn’t have to have a reason to ride e-bikes, if you want to ride one of you don’t want to don’t, it’s that simple. i respect that it’s allowed Steve to ride again though and give him back his freedom

While e-bikes aren’t for me (yet!) I have a hard time understanding the logic behind them not being allowed on most trails. The rules for “motorized” bikes should not pertain to them, they aren’t dirt bikes which is generally what those rules were established for, particularly on federal lands. Whether or not a rider has mobility issues (which can’t always “be seen”) shouldn’t be an issue either…everyone should be able to ride whatever brings them happiness.

Sure they aren't dirt bikes, but if every single person had an e-bike the trails would be blown out way faster and need to be maintained way more as they would be ridden 2-3x more. The trails you access by your legs aren't being maintained by a dedicated paid staff like Whistler or Bachelor...

Like my grandma used to say whenever she would catch me throwing rocks in the lake when I was a kid "if everyone threw a rock into the lake it would overflow."

America, have an opinion on everything and be a complete dick about it. It is tragic how divided this country has become. It is possible to have vastly different opinions and still get along.

Everyone bangs on about the over use of trails by Ebikes. So can someone explain difference between a person who rides a trail 7 days in a row on a human powered bike and a Ebiker who rides the same trail 7 times on the same day?.

You forgot to multiply 7 times a day by 7 days.... so 49 times in a week VS 7. lol

@Timo82: haha I’ll clarify the above by saying if someone owns an Ebike can only get out 1 day a week..
Ps I don’t own an Ebike

Good story, and there are other Steve Winters on the trails and other good reasons for folks to ride eBikes.

Super inspiring, being in nature and getting your blood flowing can change your mental and physical health The goal should certainly be to maximize that opportunity for everyone in our communities.
