When we made the video for the CoC Intern Contest, we just set out to make something pinkbike users would find funny, I never thought i would win the most awesome summer in the history of awesomeness.I woke up and flicked my laptop on to find a message telling me to pack my bags, i couldn't quite believe it! It seemed no time at all before i was flying into Vancouver a week before camp started, i headed up to whistler to meet everyone, get the CoC Compound ready, and help build the dirt jumps.
The first thing that struck me about whistler, apart from everyone driving on the wrong side of the road and talking funny; was that the sun was out and it was hot. I had to keep my shirt on for fear of blinding everyone with my whiteness!
The skate mini ramp
Had a few runs in the bikepark after a day of digging at about 7pm, i don't know what i could say about the whistler bike park that hasn't already been said, but I'll admit right now that between being exhausted and out of practice, i wasn't exactly doing it justice; landing sideways, bashing trees, getting my shorts caught on my shifter...
what a poser
Everyone at camp of champs had worked really hard to bring all the parts together, but the finished product is something special. Walking into Jeff's bike room was like wandering into Aladdin's cave, racks of brand new downhill and dirt jump bikes just waiting to be ridden.
Everyone was excited to get camp rolling, and not just the campers! Most of the coaches were itching to have a go on the new 365 airbag, which offers the ride out ability of a resi, with the soft landing of a foam pit!
The first few days were quite damp, this made the trails tacky and perfect for shredding, whilst keeping the temperature from baking us inside our armor. Head coach Gareth Dyer took time to look at each campers riding ability before assigning coaches and groups so that everyone could get the most out of the time they have at camp.
With everyone in touch through radios, photographer Mike and videographer Eric could get set up ahead of us to keep the pics and video edits flowing both on the mountain and in the compound.
