It is clear that mountain bike is one of the most fascinating and outstanding sport in the world. Using just a bike you can feel a great number of sensations such as freedom, fear, and pain. However, there is one thing that conditions this sport: the weather conditions; if it is raining or snowing it becomes more difficult and tedious to ride. While in the northern hemisphere is winter and all the bike parks are closed, in the southern hemisphere is summer. Nevertheless, it is not enjoyable at all. In my region, Salta, we are in February which is for me the worst month of the year for riding due to many reasons.
First, February is the month of the heavy rains. There are thunderstorms almost every day; you can be enjoying a sunny day and suddenly, dark clouds are just above you. This situation makes it very difficult to ride your bicycle because the trails are very slippery. Therefore you get very dirty with the mud and of course, you damage the components of the bike.
Secondly, as we are in summer, we suffer high temperatures. You can be riding at 35 o 40 degrees, which makes it very difficult and dangerous. People can suffer dehydration or insolation. In addition, the vegetation grows and you barely fit in the trails.
Many people will argue that in those conditions you become a better rider and develop some skills. However, there is no sense in developing those techniques for riding in those conditions because from March to December we have a dry season and all the trails are arid and dusty.
In conclusion, February is the worst month if you do mountain bike. Rains and high temperatures impede you to enjoy plentiful the mountains and your bike. Rainy season can be tiresome for us. We must seek another activity to do during this time and be prepared for the upcoming season!
Do you have any similar situation in your region?
