Rider - @philkmetz

Phil Kmetz from Skills with Phil was in Whistler this summer for Crankworx. Prior to internet fame, Phil honed his skills racing DH at the World Cup level. Max McCulloch had an opportunity to meet up with him to shoot this rowdy video.

Phil rides NOBL TR38 rims laced to a custom set of silent Onyx Vesper hubs.

Is this the Dave Grohl of Mountain Biking?
  • 18 0
I think Dave Grohl is the Dave Grohl of mountain biking. Taylor got him started.
  • 11 0
David Grohl really does ride! I've read that before but I had to go find a source; it'd be sick to shred with him... on a bike at least I'm not musically inclined.

Q: "You mentioned that mountain-bike riding with Taylor. Is this a regular occurrence?"
A: "I do every now and then. Our drummer Taylor is like a decathlete. As a drummer he’s f*cking incredible. But as an athlete, with two drumsticks in his hands, I defy anyone to pull off the 2 hour and 45 minute set like Taylor Hawkins. It’s bananas."

Phil is one of the only mtb youtubers I will watch, I don't want to watch somebody who is at a average skill level where I could do the same things myself. I want to be wowed and have something to motivate me to try to get to their level. I know Phil will probably always send it harder than me, Jeff Lenoski will probably always be better at making a trail bike work like a trials bike, and Kendal weed will always be way more stylish, but that doesn't stop me from trying. Nothing against more human youtubers, I just don't understand why some of them manage to get such a large following.
  • 9 2
 Try Dylan Stark, then.
  • 3 2
I like Phil and I like Seth from Seth's Bike Hacks. Seth may not be WC Pro level, but he seems like a pretty good rider in his own right, and there's enough interesting stuff on his channel that isn't just riding to make it worth the watch IMO.
  • 2 0
@krattAtak I started pretty late in the mountain bike game, well into my thirties and with a job and other responsibilities in the back of the mind, progression is a slow struggle. I do enjoy marveling at seemingly super human feats on a bike and try to learn something in the process, but I do enjoy following “normal” humans as well, seeing they struggle with the same things that I do. So there, possibly one of the reasons for their success.
  • 28 0

That was a rad video! Love how it combines shredding with some vlogging. This is honestly the shredit of the future! And that corner at 1:00 was awesome!!!

Phil is a great dude, I had the pleasure of meeting Phil earlier this year, and honestly didn't even want to pull out the cameras (as that always changes the dynamic). However, Phil was curious about how I make my own videos, so we went ahead and filmed, and it was awesome seeing how he rides and thinks about both bikes and content. Would love to meet up with the stache master again!!!

  • 20 0
@PhilKmetz Have you thought about aiming for EWS? You are sooo freaking quick and smooth... Plus humungous balls!
I vote you should be the Privater for season 3. You could document your side of the camera through your YouTube channel, your sponsors would love that and you will prob pick up a few more on the way.
@pinkbike please take note Wink
  • 5 1
 Privateer Phil would be awesome

Good to see Phil from a 3rd person POV. Watching his GoPro vids, you can see and feel the speed, but seeing from "outside" is even more impressive. He's one of my favorite YouTuber along with Seth (Seth Bike Hacks).
  • 7 0
I hope to run into Phil one day. I’ve been following his YouTube channel for the past 3 years now. I even bought a set of Nobl tr36 wheels because this guy is a mad man on his 38s so I thought they must be indestructible and so far they are.

Keep up the good work phil. And to all that are thinking about a set of Nobl wheels just take the leap you won’t regret it, I sure didn’t!!

I love Phil’s riding. In his youtube channel, check out his videos riding Whistler from a few weeks ago. His riding is incredible, and he more than keep up with some the best riders out there. Very impressive.
  • 5 0
Ill never forget when I came across Phils video of Beehive at Wilsons a week after I had rode it for the first time and was amazed at how fast he was riding that stuff especially covered in leaves. Keep it up Phil your a mad man ive been digging the style of your latest videos keep it up!
  • 2 0
Thanks for the kind words man! I miss Beehive. I haven't been able to ride Wilson's Creek since I graduated from school down there. Such a rad place.
  • 1 0
@PhilKmetz: Yeah man its hard to beat out here but it looks like you havent had any shortage of cool spots to ride up north though atleast in the warm months. Been wanting to make it up to Highland, maybe next season we will see you out there
  • 5 0
Seth put it best when he called Phil the king of sketch. Is there anything he can't ride? Nope. I love watching all of Phil's edits. He makes everything look so easy and approachable because he's so talented. Also just seems like a cool guy to ride/hang with.
  • 7 0
He was 100% talking about Plattekill DH races when he refers to the loose tracks he used to race
  • 5 0
Yessss! We have a winner. That's exactly what I was talking about!
  • 1 0
@PhilKmetz: Are you gonna be in Plattekill on October 20? or at NEMBA fest next year?
  • 3 0
Phil just seems like unrattled by any crazy sketchy line or is always looking for ways to ride something in the least straightforward way. Like that wild turn slide.
Since he seems to be responding to some of these comments:
Hey Phil, what style of riding or particular thing did you practice that made the biggest difference in confidence? (i.e. pump track, racing, making a skills tutorial youtube channel...)
  • 26 0
I grew up riding and racing BMX before mountain biking. Riding dirt jumps and racing you get really good at pumping and maintaining flow. When I started riding skateparks, I never cared about tricks, but I loved big transfers and figuring out how to maintain flow throughout the skatepark without pedalling. Skateparks also teach you how to be precise and change directions really quickly. When I started riding MTB I had pretty solid fundamentals as a result, but I struggled to learn how to ride off-camber and slippery surface which came with time and lots of bruises thanks (thanks MTN creek!)

I've tried to explain the importance of riding skateparks and becoming more proficient at pumping in my videos, but nobody wants to hear that. Those videos always fall flat. I think there's this perception that skateparks are just for teens, but it's one of the best places to cut your teeth (figuratively and literally).

Ah smashing techy rock at speed, beats muddy left right, left right stuff hands down.
  • 3 0
Phil !!!!! I think next summer you should come show some love to N.Conway! All the new stuff in Conway and Cranmore mountain are screaming for a skills with phil episode. I'll shuttle you myself!
  • 11 0
I did, I love that place but I didn't record it. It was a day dedicated to enjoying myself and riding with my girlfriend Smile
  • 3 0
@PhilKmetz: Pssst I think I have some vids from that day. I will dig them up. Wink
  • 3 0
Impressed every time I see this dude ride. Love his channel and how nice he is. Makes me like GT Bikes over Evil after he switched lol. Nobl wheels pick the right guy to sponsor. He puts those things to the test.
  • 3 0
That dude can’t be from earth to ride like that. Raised on a planet of gnar and steeze and just hucked too hard one day and launched into space, then back wheel dropped on to earth.
  • 10 7
Phil rides NOBL TR38 rims laced to a custom set of silent Onyx Vesper hubs - jepp couldn't care less. Apart from that nice vid.
  • 2 0
 Who's Jepp?
  • 2 0
His bike must pray every night: "plz someone told my owner the landing area of the jumps are there for something" . This guy jumps like he has a jetpack/rocket boosted bike....
  • 4 0
Haha I'm that's exactly what it thinks! In all seriousness, I hate sending things to flat (though there's a time and place). Small bumps, rocks, roots, and even square edges can all be used to deflect off of and land smoothly, but it can be hard to pick up on.
  • 5 0
Phil's so sick. Steeze for days.
  • 1 0
I love how Phil is always looking for sneaker lines. Earlier in the summer after watching a bunch of his videos I found myself trying to find little things off the side of the trail to pop off of. It made the ride that much more fun.
  • 4 0
Great riding, kinda weird feeling video though. Hillbilly riderz

I think Phil is a very underrated rider, especially with that mustache

Been watching Phil for a long time and his bike handling ability is excellent. Trying to get my jumping in order again after a stroke in 2008..... I’ll get there eventually lol. Phil! Help! I’m only in PA!
  • 1 0
Phil is a stand up guy and an absolute shredder. I had the chance to ride with him in sedona and I was blown away by the abuse his bike and wheels took. Tge world needs more people like phil.
  • 4 0
"See that pointy rock? I am going to land on that." !?!?!??!
  • 2 0
Phil‘s bike skills are really on a whole different level. I wish I had only a fraction of his composure while riding bikes. Glad he got back into YouTubing again.

Hard pass, I don't want to die! I think Rampage is where I draw the line. I'm scared watching those lines recorded on a GoPro, so I can't imagine how insane it is in person. Razz
