Video: More Bikes Equal More Fun

On the one hand there are many totally specialized riders out there nowadays and on the other hand there are some, who can ride different bikes at an impressively high level.

Slavik Hannes (former UCI 4x Worlds Silver Medalist, Austrian BMX Champion and National Team Coach) loves to ride each and every of his different bikes equally, enjoying different places and the specific advantages every bike has. There’s no doupt that his riding style is typically race influenced, mainly because he started racing BMX very early, but after 13 years of riding MTB he can ride different bikes from 20“ up to the big Enduro and DH ones with top skills.

He is still doing gates and sprint sessions on the BMX but is also training a lot on his Ghost Enduro to enhance his MTB skills in rough terrains. Putting those aspects together on the 4x bike they make him become one of the best and powerful 4x riders out there from the Pro Tour members, also always being a contender for a podium at the Worlds.

Sopron DH - Enduro

Race runs on the big bike at the Sopron Downhill track in Hungary are also part of the game to get speed, endurance and confidence on rough parts. The building crew there knows how to do this job extremely well.

Sopron DH - Enduro

A secret top spot where he loves to prepare for upcoming 4x races has been built by a friend, one of the best Austrian DH Riders. "For sure one of the nicest spots I ever had the pleasure to shred on“, Hannes said.

Secret Spot - 4x Fully

VIC Trails in Vienna is only 5 minutes away from his home. During a tight race season there hardly is time to enjoy this place, but offseason makes it possible.

VIC Trails - 4x Hardail

He started racing BMX when he was 7 years old and raced some years in the elite class before his focus switched to MTB, but some aspects of his training are still taking place on his home track. The fact he is coaching the Austrian National BMX Team and also is the 2017 + 2018 national champ shows that he is quite fast on that kiddy bike too.

The lesson is clear: with BMX skills you can cover >98 % of the remaining disciplines (well, let's exclude trial from that...).

...concluded I just to wipe away the crocodile tear that summarizes my wasted childhood past of playing computer games. *

Did you notice how size of the stuff he was sending barely changed regardless of the bike including the BMX?

It surely takes some time to translate BMX to Enduro/DH but once you do... it is safe to say that BMXer getting into gravity desciplines is way better off than an XCer. The BMX kids I see doing Mtb have problems with lines through rough stuff and cornering in general. But once it clicks in, sorry, other dudes xc/road mileage stops to matter. You are left with supreme skills and insane power while they spin circles.

@WAKIdesigns: I always rode mountain bikes, I don't know what else to say. I'm actually pretty darn happy I have, because I bought a commuter bike, and it's a flimsy piece of shit. Constant problems every time I ride it, from the tires going flat, to the rims bending, to the rims flat spotting, to the shitty presta valves. It's pretty much more maintenance than riding, and I'm careful as heck with it.

@Kramz: not sure how that relates, but if you want an advice for a commuter, buy a pair of disc brake ready road wheels and quality tyres. Then build a 26” ht with rigid fork of all left overs from your garage. Fit those road wheels into it. I also recommend mechanical disc brakes. This bike of mine is absolute sht. But it works well.

@Kramz: standard mountain biker issues, always rely on the suspension and as such cant ride smoothly
growing up i always raced bmx and when my mates started riding downhill i did it on my bmx. now that ive made the switch to mtb fully its been unreal for my line choice and skill set

@bagballz: the main thing that "average Joes" can't do is accelerate and have control over boosting/vs squashing jumps. Some of them can squash but Boosting is way over heads of most of us. I saw a fat dude sitting on his ass on big line in Hafjell. He was just raising his ass on take offs. That is how much skill it takes to fly flow trails. But tell him to ride slower and he'll kill himself. Tell him to clear the first jump on BMX track and he won't be able to do it. That translates for example into getting into a rockgarden and clearing half of it jumping from one single rock or root. Over the years I heard people talking about them " destorying wheels and suspension riding hard in Alps". Usually a MX head who's capacity to ride at high speed at take sht from the trail writes checks his body and bike can't cash. One dude was proud to tell me he lands drops into rockgardens. That's why he needs a DH bike and a reliable fork...

He should see one of the kids (incl 12 year olds) on our local BMX track (so no high fly level) and try to ride like they do. Also plenty of mountain bikers whould try to keep up with them on our little BMX track, at least try to compensate with their "so fkng developed MTB fitness". They highly probably won't. I can't. Now imagine a 12 year old with a semi pro background... they can forget it. No matter what Vo2 Max they have. The basic component of efficiency and speed is missing: skill. Namely: hip hinge movement and timing of it's application. Everyone is smart when they see BMXers riding, I could maybe do that. Don't say a word before you actually stand up there in the gate and come to the finish line. And I wish to tell them worst. Even if you had a year upon you, you won't get there. meanwhile if that kid has a solid year on a proper mountain bike... sorry mate. You loose everywhere. He'll be riding circles around you on your DH bike and giant helmet, riding Am bike with knee guards and open lid. I've seen a Dirt Jumper/skate park dude do this to XCers on local evening rides. Imagine a BMX stud.

What they can't get is that aside of flat corners, mountain biking is just that. Pumping and launching sht with a more uneven surface in between. Even flat cornering in mud uitilizes hip drive. You look at Danny Hart, he is off the ground so much. Look at his Val Di Sole runs. compression, release, compression, release, boost, squash, compression and so on and so on. Turns out this is what riding BMX track and pump track is about.

Is it just me or was the enduro section sped up?

Yup deffo been cranked up a notch !!!

Not a fan of people speeding up videos to look faster. No doubt he's fast, but sped up videos feel like cheating somehow...

That 4x fully would nail all of those trails

Imbossibru. According to Pinkbike "Awake-as-fuk Geometry community" the reach on that bike is at least 10cm too short, head angle 6 degrees too steep but most importantly, seat angle is 10 degrees too slack.

@WAKIdesigns: and you'd struggle with the bottle

Except those are tracks, not trails

@ceecee: except he was riding flow trails... like most people do these days. What a huge portion of “gravity” population strives after is good race results and photos of themselves sending whips down big lines. These don’t go together for vast majority of us with 6h a week for riding... and what is the most popular assistance exercise for many many people to get better at it? Road bike...

What I see is more skills equals more fun. There’s enough blokes out there have more bikes and very little fun.

Me and my buddies grew up riding bmx. Sending 3s off stair sets and local dirt jumps. Took a lot of slams and developed incredible bike control over those years.
