It's a very short crit in downtown Prescott on Friday afternoon, all pavement. The riders just ride their normal mountain bikes, maybe some change their tires. The actual race, the Whiskey Off Road, takes place Sunday morning for the pros. The crit is a fun event, and you're starting position on Sunday morning is based on the results, so there is some motivation to do well, but other than that not a lot of importance is attached to it. The actual race, the Whiskey 50, is incredibly hard, attracts big names, and is a super great event. I would love to see coverage on Pinkbike.

fat tire crit and they are pretty much on road tires...

I hope there's also coverage of the mtb race...

 That is coming today.

Seriously, odd coverage for PB. Submitted by @NinerBikes though, so might not be really "Official" PB coverage. Even still, only covering the crit is pretty weird. Maybe only cause one of their riders won women's? If so, that's pretty lame, if you're only going to post coverage of races that your riders won. If you're there all weekend, then do same 6 photo story for the other races too.

Agreed. It's an awesome event no doubt, but this is kind of weird for PinkBike to put this up on the home page rather than the full XC race...

PB uses an algorithm for content promotion to the front page, for content that isn't created by their own writers. So it may have hit the front page because a bunch of people clicked it when it first was put up.

There is an XC recap coming today and a full event recap coming Wednesday.

Curious - what are the rules for this? I'm assuming a flat bar, minimum tire size, etc.
Also, are there parts that are in woods, or is it just a road crit on mountain bikes?

I was wondering the same thing. I think most everyone just pumped up their MTB tires and ran with that.

Pro Fat Tire Crit Bicycle Rules

•You must use the same make and model of bicycle that you will use in Sunday's 50 Proof Endurance XC Race; tires are the only piece of equipment that are allowed to be different.

•Tires must have a minimum width of 1.5" or 38mm. Width is as measured, not as may be stated by manufacturer on tire.

•Ends of handlebars must be plugged.

•No bar ends allowed.

•Bicycles must be powered solely by the rider. No outside energy source is to be used...other than gravity.

@wako29 - This is 100% pavement. It's used to make the call-up order on the grid for the XC race. Participation isn't required, but a DNS in the crit results in an 8 minute time penalty for the main event.

@Twallywilly - Most riders just ran the same tires, but some (most notably the Specialized and Scott-3ROX squads) did use slicks.
