Press Release: Patrol

Indonesian mountain bike specialists, Patrol Mountain, has announced our 3rd electric mountain bike. The Patrol E-Five joins the all-alloy Patrol E-Six electric enduro bike and versatile Patrol E-Zero hardtail, to give trail riders a new eMTB option.

Patrol Mountain believes in a no-compromise approach to designing and building mountain bikes, so when it came to developing a trail-specific EMTB we knew an entirely new platform was in order.

We've managed to maintain our brand identity with a silhouette that immediately shouts 'Patrol' but while similar in looks this is an entirely different package. The main triangle of the Patrol E-Five is made entirely from carbon fibre, a first for our EMTB range, and our efficient suspension platform has been tweaked to offer 130mm of useful rear-wheel travel.

Being a trail-specific EMTB we wanted the Patrol E-Five to bridge the gap between our versatile E-Zero and hard-hitting E-Six enduro bike, what we've created is a bike that suits a wide variety of riders thanks to our flip-chip adjustable geometry. Flipping the chip takes the E-Five from a mild-mannered mile muncher to a gravity-fueled down-country smasher.

The efficient 130mm of rear-wheel travel is matched to a 150mm travel Fox suspension fork, providing plenty of travel and traction for even the most demanding trails, and because the E-Five uses a Shimano EP8 motor and 630Wh BT8036 battery, you'll be able to lap trails all day long.

I don't see any weights given, but it would be interesting to see how this one stacks up against the Orbea. I feel kinda weird saying this, but E-bikes do have some appeal. Now if only someone could make one fit my sub-$2500 budget...

My goodness, these bikes are uninspiring. I'm 99% sure that Patrol just looks in a chinese bike catalogue, orders frames, and goes from there.

130mm E-bike? 125mm dropper? Why? Who are the people ordering these bikes?

Pretty funny that the marketing blurb on the Patrol website for the E-Six is a quote from Pinkbike that literally just describes the bike. "“THE 2021 E-SIX USES AN ALL-ALLOY FRAME WITH 150MM OF TRAVEL ON THE REAR AND 160MM AT THE OPPOSITE END. PATROL DEVELOPED THE E-SIX AS A 29ER EMTB AND SHIPS THE E-SIX WITH COMPLETE SHIMANO DRIVETRAINS, FOX SUSPENSION AND A MIX OF OWN-BRAND KIT.” – PINKBIKE Smile

Pretty sure the Patrol website is made by a bot.

Haha, I can assure you a bot didn't make the website You might not know this, but for a brand that isn't as well known outside of our home market to get a story on Pinkbike is pretty big news so we like to promote it on our site
Also, our frames are designed and manufactured to our specifications. You won't find a catalogue frame with the same design, geometry or features as the E-Five (or any of our bikes for that matter)

@PatrolMTB: I'm sticking with my points above.

What you call a "story", I call a Patrol-generated press release that you guys sent to Pinkbike. You're quoting a website, that's quoting your PR team. Cool?

Also, why a 125mm dropper? Do people riding shorter travel bikes enjoy the thrill of having a dropper post that could also force them over the handlebars when descending?
  • 5 1
@KJP1230: We were referring to the quote in your original comment as the 'story'. Yup, the above is a press release. Are you new here?
  • 1 2
@PatrolMTB: You're clearly not comprehending what I said.

The quote in my original post, the one that you guys advertise on your website, it is NOT a "story". Pinkbike didn't write it up, Patrol Bikes did. I googled the quote, and found the Pinkbike post - it was written by Patrol Bikes. In other words: it was a press release. Here's the link incase you forgot:

www.pinkbike.com/u/PatrolMTB/blog/2021-patrol-e-six-unveiled-with-shimano-ep8.html

So, like I said. You guys wrote the original press release for the E-Six. Sent it to Pinkbike. Pinkbike posted your press release, then you guys quoted Pinkbike (quoting YOU) as a marketing blurb that merely describes your product matter-of-factly, on your website. Just cut out the middle man and have your PR team send an email to your marketing folks. Wink Are you guys new here?

@PatrolMTB: Here. I'll fix it for you.

" "The 2021 E-Six uses an all-alloy frame with 150mm of travel on the rear and 160mm at the opposite end. Patrol developed the E-Six as a 29er EMTB and ships the E-Six with completed Shimano drivetrains, Fox suspension and a mix of own-brand kit." - Patrol Bikes" - PINKBIKE (and now quoted for a 3rd time on the Patrol website)

I LOVE when ebikes make people mad. its basically like mooning them
  • 10 2
With a 465mm chainstay, it is definitely sticking out its rear end.

I don't see the point with some of a smaller travel Ebike (personally)....may just be my use case, but I ride moto and do the odd enduro race, I'd prefer to have a 170mm bike, dual crown and a big battery that weighs 55 lbs.....that wouldn't be rideable with E-assist...while a lighter 130 bike would be...
  • 3 3
Agreed. Seems odd to bother with only 130mm of travel if you're gonna add a motor anyway. I have to believe that a similarly designed 150-160mm bike will be nearly identical on the ascents, and even fairly low key terrain is fun on a 150mm bike.

Then again, this is brought to you by the company makes an E-hardtail. Why anyone on earth would want an e-hardtail, I dunno? For the rider that doesn't know if he'll like mountain biking, and also wants it to be really easy?

"From the company that brought you the e-hardtail and the e-short travel: the e-single speed. None of the fun. None of the effort!"

We see this argument in non-motorised bikes too. When big travel bikes climb so well these days why offer a shorter travel bike?
Although this is an eMTB, a shorter travel bike is still more efficient especially for riders who like to set a lower power/torque profile from the E-Tube app and achieve as much range as possible. There are those riders who want to Boost everywhere but there are other EMTB riders who want the best range/altitude gain possible and the E-Five is more suitable to this.
We also have a mix of product developers around the world and again, we have those who like big travel bikes and the terrain to warrant them, but we have other riders who prefer a shorter travel bike. We've tuned the E-Five to be a little more lively on the trail compared to our E-Six so each bump, roller or rock can either be ploughed through or easily jumped.
With the E-five in our range we now have an EMTB to cover most riders needs. The E-Six is our big travel bike, the E-Zero for riders who want a versatile EMTB, and the E-Five which is just as at home on trail center Blues, as it is on big mountain adventures ✌️

@PatrolMTB: fair points - thanks for the response....

...why would a bike company want to come out with an ebike? because thats what a lot of people want. Or they would not be selling them. Pertty much everyone i know that does not have an ebike, wants one at some point. I tried one in the parking lot, and it was easy to see the apeal of them. Like carbon frames, 29 wheels, 148 boost, low and slack, and 170mm travel trail bikes...ebikes are here and not going anywhere but becoming more common on the trails. it is what it is.
  • 4 1
woah this looks like that other ebike
  • 1 1
 which
  • 5 1
@Kimura: that other one with a basic suspension and frame design

My favourite PB headline... Brand X launches XXXmm eMTB. Loosely translated: Brand X is scared to death they're missing out on an emerging market that is going to be worth a kazillion $$$ so they need to put something out. I just don't see this as a big market. I don't know anyone who pedals that says my next bike is going to be an eMTB... But maybe I'm out to lunch? Did PB do a "My next bike will ban e-bike poll" yet? Seriously, take a deep breath and relax Brand X. We still love you for your acoustics and you lose a little sex appeal every time you drop an e-bike into your line-up.
  • 8 3
All of the riders I know, definitely say: "my next bike will be eBike" or already have one
  • 3 2
@nickmalysh: Then PB definitely needs to do a poll. The comment thread would be awesome.
  • 1 2
 Let's rephrase that:

I don't know anyone UNDER THE AGE OF 50 who says "my next bike is going to be an eMTB".
  • 4 1
I wonder what Transition has to say about this.
  • 7 0
Would have been even cheekier if they named this model 'Transition' by Patrol.
  • 2 0
Patrol was originally a line from United bike brand which came out around 2006, CMIIW. They rebranded the Patrol line into its own brand, so now we have Patrol as a bike brand, and Patrol as a line from Transition. If they did not rebrand it, then we'll have United Patrol and Transition Patrol now. Which, IMO, will be more confusing.
  • 2 0
IDK, this one just looks funky. Poor design choices, looks cobbled together.
  • 4 2
Interesting in how many ebikes are coming out; or, PB is just becoming an industry shill for them.
  • 3 2
Pinkbike had always been an industry shill.
  • 3 3
Now that would be a fun bike to try. Interesting approach to an E bike.
  • 1 1
465mm chain stays? Seriously? Do you even manual bro?
