Jesse Melamed is f*cked-up fast. Jaws is one of Whistler's steepest, gnarliest trails.

You do the math.

Jesse Melamed rides Whistler Steeps
Jesse grew up racing cross country in Whistler... but "XC" in Whistler just means steep, technical trails on a 100mm bike while wearing Lycra.

Jesse Melamed rides Whistler Steeps
These are the type of trails Jesse used to race on his little bike. It's only natural that when he got on an enduro race bike, his pace quickened.

Jesse Melamed rides Whistler Steeps
Jesse's first stage win came during Whistler's first EWS race, on what everyone agreed was the steepest, gnarliest stage. Since then, he's won that stage every time it has been raced on.

Though he travels the world to ride and race bikes, nothing beats coming back home to Whistler.

Wow, usually video's don't really capture how steep some trails are, but this looked extra steep and crazy! great video and riding skills!
  • + 55
Thanks! Glad you could tell it was steep. Lots of scary moments filming this one..
  • + 6
@JesseMelamed: The way this video was edited reminds me so much of Ride to the Hills. The best bike video ever made. Your cornering skillz are unreal!!!!!
  • + 5
@JesseMelamed: avg grade of 39% on this run!! pretty nuts
  • + 4
It's seriously one of the most entertaining riding videos I've seen in a long time. Watching someone properly skilled rip up properly steep tech is super fun to watch.
  • + 2
 @jayacheess: stoked you liked it!
  • + 54
I see a bright future for this Marmelade kid !!!! Good job bud Smile
  • + 11
 Thanks friend!
  • + 51
Not a single watered down flow trail in the whole vid. Just flowy teck riding. Wicked!
  • + 6
Don't know how flowy I'd be on some of those sections. Would just be brakes squealing all the way.
  • + 10
Such a fun trail to ride so naturally it looks good on camera
  • + 29
Jesse do you even drift bro..........
  • + 8
When I grow up I want to ride like Jesse, Oh shit I'm a half century already, well maybe I'll grow up next year!!!!!!
  • + 11
 Just a little bit
  • + 10
 @knarf1: never too late!
  • + 23
The world needs more trails like these! MAKE TRAILS GREAT AGAIN!!!!
  • + 6
 Come to Whistler!
  • + 1
I'll be in Whistler/Squamish and V. Island in two weeks. Can't wait. The only problem is that I'll come back to my local trails and miss the loam Big Grin
  • + 18
If this trail was built in the states people would call it "unsustsinable. " I love the Canada!
  • + 19
 IMBA gore
  • + 22
Yeah the International Momma's Boy Association would definitely not approve.
  • + 13
Jesse always makes it look easy! Cool vid.
  • + 5
 Thanks Tippie!
  • + 8
Fast, gnarly riding as always from Jesse. Props to Peter, something about this video made it feel much more 3 Dimensional, much more real than normal. Very well filmed, I had to watch it twice right away.
  • + 5
Thank you man, so glad you liked it!
  • + 8
Great technical skills! Nice show! Good luck for the rest of the season! Smile
  • + 5
 Thanks a lot!
  • + 8
So good. Love the work boys! Shows the rowdy-as-hell feel of the west side shatter rocks and roots. Sweet action.
  • + 4
Thanks! Stoked it looks gnarly on film
  • + 7
And Jesse can still rock xc. Top ten in gc at this years BC Bike race. Fast and fit!
  • + 3
Not much pedalling in this video though haha
  • + 4
Love the multiple shots on some of the really gnarly sections (like @ 1:24), give a much better idea of how crazy steep that stuff is. I love how much style and smoothness you find in such a raw descent.
  • + 4
Thank you! It's always such a challenge to show how steep a trail is on video, but once you pass a certain threshold... Jaws is just plain freakin' steep.
  • + 1
@JesseMelamed, your videos are sick. First one i saw was the peak to creek one, and they have all been awesome since. Keep it up man, and go get em.....one of the ews is gonna be yours real soon
  • + 1
 Thanks man, I appreciate it!
  • + 2
I wish we had riding like that in SW WA. We certainly have the landscape to support trails like that, but the advocacy mindset is elsewhere...
  • + 11
Advocacy generally seems to be pushed by older trail users who generally have less interest in tech/ gnar riding.
If you want it to change get involved...
  • + 2
 @Dustfarter: nailed it. both points.
  • + 3
@Dustfarter: for the record, loads of us older users are on the same page with you!
  • + 3
@Dustfarter: well, if it's that simple.....
  • + 4
 That trail is freaking awesome!!!
  • + 1
 Yea it is!
  • + 3
Those scrolling pics always make me fall halfway off my office chair, LOL.
  • + 1
I'd quite like to see the outtakes of you trying to stop running with the gimbal down the hill! Awesome video, great riding. Gonna watch it again. Cheers
  • + 2
Fun fact: Peter actually ate it pretty hard filming this and ended up having to get stitches! Riding this trail is scary enough, can't imaging sprinting down the trail with camera gear in hand focusing on filming.
  • + 2
@mdhorner: I'm not surprised! I really think it was worth it tho- not often I see a video that makes me sit up and pay attention these days- we're spoiled rotten for awesome content- but I couldn't take my eyes of this. Great work.
  • + 2
@gavlaa: Hahaha I forgot about those stitches! Running downhill with a gimbal has sort of become a thing I do nowadays... I think I'm getting better at it but the reality is I'm just trusting my feet to find their way. Seems to be working OK most of the time.
  • + 2
This is how we all wish we rode. And what we wish we rode. Nice work JEM!
  • + 2
 Thanks!
  • + 2
That was sick. The music changing from scene to scene reminded me of Ride to the Hills, just awesome.
  • + 1
I was just about to say that. I haven't seen coordinated music/visual transitions from scene to scene since. The chill vibe of the music matches too.
  • + 2
We liked the feel of it too. Natural transitions in the trail.
  • + 1
 I can ride like Jesse.....no wait....I'm 6"4 and gangly!! #lowcentreofgravity
  • + 2
Is being short finally an advantage for me?!
  • + 1
@JesseMelamed: For steep technical gnar I think for sure....unless you are handling freak like Flo Nicolai Smile
  • + 1
 @JesseMelamed: I feel you!!
  • + 1
Looks like a fun trail - love how green it is out in BC...it's a desert here!
  • + 2
 On the old Altitude weirdly.
  • + 1
 It was filmed last year
  • + 5
Filmed before I got the new one. Just shows the old one still rips!
  • + 1
@JesseMelamed: thanks for chiming in! Really curios if the new one is more potent than the old one (Rally Edition)?
  • + 1
@Foxy87: they're different. Old one could charge if set up for it. The new one is a much more active bike. Takes a little more work but rewards with more speed and more fun
  • + 1
Jesse, you're a beast! Congrats on making Jaws look ten times easier than it is!
  • + 1
Yeah baby! That's the shit, proper mtbing, steep, loose, narrow,no big bmx motorway shite.top marks from me
  • + 1
That's what we all want to ride!
  • + 1
Uber steep, gnar, drift, awesome vid. Gonna give your cornering technique a go this afternoon Smile
  • + 1
always miss a chance at jaws, I had to settle for GM, rockwork korova to bintys yesterday but that was pretty fun!
  • + 2
That's a sweet bike. I need to get myself one of those!!
  • + 2
That exact one will be ready in about 1 week for you!
  • + 1
That's the best mtb film ive seen in a long time , That trail just looked epic !!!!
  • + 1
 Thanks!
  • + 1
Gotta only be a matter of time before Jesse wins on EWS event, he's been too fast for too long.

This shows what happens when you add rabbit into your diet
  • + 1
Do I need more rabbit then?
  • + 2
Niceeee! That drift on 2:18!! :O
  • + 1
Only took a few tries... Super fun to do though!

 This is sick Jesse!
  • + 1
 Thanks Brian! Welcome to Pinkbike!
  • + 1
Jesse why do you not go for the Slayer on steeps like that? Sweet video
  • + 1
Didn't have a Slayer at the time.
  • + 1
@JesseMelamed: you're such an amazing rider! Could I ask you why you race with the Altitude instead of the Slayer at the EWS?
  • + 1
@BrilliantNeon: I have just always ridden the Altitude and I am happy with it. I don't like to switch bikes too often so I never really tried the slayer.
  • + 1
Yo wear a DH lid bro or hope u rock a mouth guard..teeth are pricey
  • + 1
I thought about that as well!
  • + 1
 Amazing skills there.
