Video: Miranda Miller Rides her Local Trails in 'Home Bound & Down'

by Peter Wojnar

Feeling strong and fast coming out of an amazing offseason, Miranda Miller was looking forward to a full season of putting her hard work to the test—like every other EWS racer.

But in the past few weeks, the global health crisis that is COVID-19 has forced a lot of change. Cancelled races are far from the most important issue facing us these days, with overloaded medical systems, economic crisis, and with social distancing measures and other mandates coming from governments and health authorities every day.

At this point, it’s hard to know what’s going to happen next, how long it will take for this pandemic to play out, or how many people will be affected and to what degree.

bigquotes“Not that I’ve ever taken it for granted, but at this time in my life, it’s really hitting home how lucky I am. My one outing of the day is going to be riding my bike, and then the rest is going to be inside. A lot of my friends around the world can’t do that… so right now, I’ve been trying to really appreciate that I can go outside and ride.” Miranda Miller

Miranda is lucky enough to live somewhere that she can access trails in a safe way that doesn’t impact others, and with much of the race season cancelled, she’s adjusted her approach to riding to suit these difficult times. For Miranda, there’s little to do but take life day by day, adapt as she goes, and take joy in appreciating what we still can.

Marc My Word is a classic Squamish trail, slowly and awkwardly winding its way through insane boulders and rock faces. Seriously, look at the rocks. They're huge!

While she's usually focused on keeping her speed up and riding faster trails, right now is a good time to slow down and appreciate what we do have.

It's cool seeing a great rider riding down what to most people is a pretty hard trail, in such a smooth, controlled and mellow fashion. A pleasant change from all the cliched 'full Enduro' / berm destroying stuff.

(Anyway Cathy Z is still going to lose her shit LOL)

superb approach to how life is at the moment, keep enjoying those amazing trails for as long as possible.

I think that getting out and riding responsibly like this is still one of the best things we could be doing right now. It's good for your health, read healthy lungs and it's even better for your mind. Releasing the endorhpins is also hugely beneficial to healthy mind and body. She's in control and by herself, I think it's awesome.

 Sweet vid! Miranda rules.

nice video and a reminder why we all dont need / want super slack ,long bikes
  • 3 0
She's riding a Process 153 right? Definitely a bike I've had in mind for good squish but still can move it around a bit.
  • 4 0
@roma258: Yeah great bike, ive got the 27.5 version and love it most fun bike ive ever ridden
  • 1 0
@roma258: I would saythe 153 is probably the quintessential shore/Squamish bike. Is for me anyway. It's the SKS of trail bikes. I probably see as many Processes as anything else.
  • 1 0
@woofer2609: that's interesting, because it's not the longest or slackest bike out there.

I would like to ride trails like that right now. Funny I crash when I least expect it . So I'm not riding teck at all. Marc my word is a slow pic your way through the tight turns type of trail . Go slow and enjoy the scenery. Perhaps hit the challenging trails after this is over. Better yet hike up a trail. Get to know the terrain and perhaps do a bit of trail maintenance. Stay stafe.

Had a little bit of Border Patrol in that vid too. Good to see some classics getting attention.

It is insane the amount of people that are shuttling on our trails up here right now. They are really not getting the situation. Maybe they need a loved one to pass away to clue in?
  • 16 0
They have banned shuttling at my local trails due to the current situation

Our trails are absolutely mobbed with hikers and off-leash dogs right now. The businesses are shut down, and everyone's going stir-crazy, so I get that, but man it's actually damn near impossible to get a decent ride in after 10 am.
  • 1 0
@roma258: It is like Disneyland out there. Have to go deeper in the woods to avoid the crowds.
  • 1 0
@roma258: it’s getting annoying with how many dog walkers are on mtb trails. Because the walking trails right next to the riding trails are over run! Most people are letting their dogs run free.
  • 1 0
@tacklingdummy: I rarely run into people on Disneyland. Helluva trail though...
  • 2 2
Everyone continues to be surprised when they go out riding, how many other people are out there riding who shouldn’t be out there making it busy when they are out there riding, it seems.
I often hear people calling out “ Why are so many people out here, don’t they get it?“ when the person calling that out is also out there.
Weird.

@woofer2609: Wish I was talking about Disneyland the trail. Just an analogy.

That was a refreshingly perfect video for the current state of play.

Beautiful trail, beautiful style. Man, her every casual turn and roll-in looks smoother than anything I've ever done in my life lol.

What a cool human! Thanks for the video, this really does make you appreciate what we have.

Great video and great messaging at this time. We live just up the road in Whistler and it's painful to know that great riding without snow is available 35 minutes down the road, but knowing that if you can't walk or ride there, you shouldn't be going there. But we all have our job to do, and our job is to stay in our home community, hang only with your household unit, keep life simple, and enjoy the privileges you have. Luckily snow is starting to melt out here and lower elevation trail work is starting to keep us busy enough for our one trip outside each day.

Love the message Miranda! - We are super lucky to have Squamish riding in our backyard during such strange times. Rode 'Meet Your Maker' today - Super soaked and Stoked!!! Great social distancing today. NOBODY was on the trails - rain scared everyone away, but the keeners. See you out there Smile

Dammit. Just canceled my end of April Squamish trip. Fingers crossed for fall.

Really liked this one. Miranda is just super cool and always tells a good story. She also just looks rad on the bike. She rides very confidently and looks really strong. Good example of women being both competitive and having a great time in the sport. I’m a fan!

I mean... They do own Trail Forks, you would just assume they wouldn't fuck that up lol

arent there some huge old hits on this trail?
  • 4 1
@nennarv: there are. Easier to see if you hike up
  • 2 0
@TheBearDen: you are assuming whoever rode and recorded the trail knows the correct name.
Definitely not the case on my local hill.

Soak it up Miranda. A lot of us are grounded and wishing we could get out there. Tear it up

One of my all time favourite trails in Squamish.

It's such an amazing gorgeous jankathon

I lived in Squamish from 93-2001 and the trails there are MTB awesome. Miranda riding the slower trails in Squamish is actually smart, if you are going to take a chance and ride your bike during this COVID-19 epidemic. With slower trails and not big jumps, there is much less chance of an injury that could cause an unnecessary hospital visit. Unfortunately, faster flow trails may cause rider to come up on much slower hikers, dog walkers, etc too quickly, and rider/hikers may not have time to ensure they keep that "mandatory" 2M (6.5ft|) apart, especially with tight single track trails and blind corners. Please everyone, social distancing is required by everyone, or this epidemic/recession will continue for much longer and we will not be able to continue to our normal life's...

Seems like a sweet, kind, honest human being, I bet she was hard on herself the last couple of years, coming from DH to enduro and questioning herself, but glad she shook that doubt off. She can definitely win

Such skills on making a tough trail look like a mellow afternoon ride. So SMOOTH

Yep, it is great if you can get out to ride during this mess. However, where I live the trail systems are like Disneyland.

 Can I own this forest?
  • 1 0
Sorry, no. If it was on southern Vancouver Island, then yes.
  • 1 0
Technically not the upper part of this trail as its on Crown Land, however, if you're "Karl Albrecht Jr" - or another of Germany's 114 billionaires - and want to buy some very similar Canadian forest, just a few hundred meters from Marc my Words, there's a turn key piece of property compete with 20+ of Squamish's best technical riding.
Assessed at $13.6milion...and there are plenty of people here who'd like to see you buy this slice of MTB heaven and bring a solution to the community!
Budget $25-$40mil?

@jonnyboy: Good to know...It's almost better if owned by a timber company, as you can still ride after trees are felled AKA most of Nanaimo or MacNutt if you dirt bike. If it gets developed, people tend to frown on someone riding through their back yard.

 @jonnyboy:
I haven´t checked my Lottery ticket yet…..
I always wanted to own a mountain with an enchanted forest.

At the moment I own one (1) Sequoia tree in my garden.
