Pyga Slakline X01 Black

The South African brand based in the small town of Howick, just outside of Pietermaritzburg, design and manufacture world-class mountain bikes that have a race proven pedigree to handle the rigours of the world’s toughest stage race to the gnarliest Enduro course. The line of bikes includes both 27.5” and 29” wheels sizes, with travel ranging from 100mm to 170mm to handle the majority of riding genres. PYGA bikes have both a strong XC/marathon background with the South African Team PYGA Euro Steel placing 7th in the 2017 Cape Epic, and 12th in 2018. With a proven track record of winning every other stage race in 2017, the STAGE has more than proven its ground amongst the world’s best.

Recent additions to the range are the SLAKLINE (Enduro/Bikepark) and HYRAX (Trail/Light Enduro) rigs.

With almost 20 years of bike design behind Pat, primarily in the field of downhill, there is no lack of heritage in the brand. It’s no wonder that PYGA has such a strong DH influence from Pat Morewood’s DH racing background, having designed the much-acclaimed MAKULU that was used by team Morewood United Ride almost 10 years ago under the likes of Nathan Rennie, Mitch Delfs and Mick Hannah.

“The first time I saw a SLAKLINE on my computer, I immediately started to find out where and when I could get one. A week later, a mutual friend of Patrick and mine asked me if I had heard of PYGA Bikes and knew of Pat Morewood? I told him, I actually want to buy one. I was then introduced to Pat, ordered a few sample frames, and tested the bikes. Every step of the way the bikes have impressed me more and more. From when we first unpackaged the frames, to the ease of assembly, and to actually riding the bikes on the trails, the bikes kept getting better. PYGA makes a very refined, practical, and most importantly fun bike. That is why we chose to work with PYGA”

“We are super proud to be associated with such a passionate team of guys. The first time I had a message from Howie, I was a bit star struck. To have a legend like him contact us was a big deal. We are just regular guys and girls trying our best at what we love doing and the break into the USA is massive for us. PYGA is still a niche brand competing on the world arena. In a cool kind of way we are fortunate that South Africa has the largest Marathon and competitive mountain biking community in the world. We are therefore able to test and race our bikes in some of the most challenging and harsh conditions in the world. 3 years ago, we pioneered what is now regarded as the “current trend” in this shorter travel category of bike with huge success here at home. We also pioneered our Proprietary Plus5 chainline concept. We are an innovative Brand that prefers to lead. As we say, “RIDE DIFFERENT.”

The DHF looks good on the front, but I am more of an Assegai.

 So, no small size?
Some of us can't ride a 447mm reach on their trail bike. Let's not even talk about the full Enduro at 454mm reach.
  • 11 1
Do you like it in the rear, too?
  • 2 1
@enrico650: Most Assegai riders prefer a larger size and more cushin' for the pushin'
  • 3 1
@enrico650: PREACH! so that mean no kids can ride that bike and me being 5'3" any bike over 415-420 reach seems really long and makes it tough to climb and whip around. I'm all for long and slack but short people are a real thing.

 @MTBrent: only Addix out back.

Nice lineup! Decent looking, nice range, solid geo numbers. But they need a long travel 29er since all other bikes are obsolete.
  • 13 0
Huh? I thought they needed a super slack short travel 29'er, since that was the only bike that wasn't obsolete? Damn it's hard keeping up these days.
  • 2 0
by the way, I have a "mid" travel 29'er (130mm). So looks like my bike is surely obsolete, I just don't know if I have too much travel or too little, but either way, it totally sucks and I have no idea how I can ride that outdated POS.

There has got to be some market saturation point they teach about in biz school, and this market has to be getting close.
  • 7 0
I'm surprised at how many bike companies exist. They're probably fine bikes but it seems like there's oversaturation of bike brands in what is a relatively small marketplace
  • 2 0
And so many brands with similar set ups.

Pricing on his original Morewood frames were notoriously expensive, but I believe it was because they were actually welded and shipped out of South Africa.

These look to be carbon, i.e. Asian. Wonder if he'll have the parts kit and frames shipped to Reno & pre-assembled/packaged there and then shipped out again to US riders?

Either way...everything Richard Beytagh ever told me of Pat Morewood was of a stand up guy.

Good luck.

I'm sure he's a great guy, the Reno crew is rad, and the bikes ride well....but $4,500 starting price for mail order direct plastic bikes?! Damn, I know I'm getting old...but things are so expensive anymore.

I really like their brand story. Gotta start somewhere. We should def prop up anyone and everyone who's trying to make better stuff.

 Hydrax please
  • 1 0
 Second that.
  • 3 2
Love it. However, $6K for GX build and $9K for X01 build. Seems a bit steep.
  • 2 0
 @papaonessa16:

Where do you see these prices?
  • 2 1
@papaonessa16: Yep. Trek Fuel EX 9.8 is $5000 for GX build. No junk spec other than suspect dropper.
  • 2 0
@whambat: exchange rate, Zar to USD using the current prices. GX build was actually around $8k when I checked because of fluctuation in the exchange rate.
  • 3 1
@papaonessa16: Our GX Build for all bikes starts at $4499, and goes up to $4699.

You can get an X01 or XX1 build for $6k.
  • 3 1
@LoganKM1982: Check Pyga.us for the USA website. The prices are in $USD, and are competitive with any other direct sales brand in the USA.

@oxide: Competitive? us.yt-industries.com/detail/index/sArticle/1926/sCategory/511...Tell me again how it compares to this link? Going to spend 1K more on Pyga...or buy a YT........

Companies like this one almost look some money laundering scheme.
  • 5 1
Definitely not laundering money, because we would be making way more money if we were. haha Just a small company out of South Africa that makes fun legit bikes. Check out the Pyga Eurosteel team and their results.

Hyrax and Slakline look sick. Would love to take either for a spin.

Interesting seat angles...i wonder what they end up really being on a large with a 150 post for a 6 footer...
