bigquotesThe new Lyrik fork is a lot different to the previous model. With the new DebonAir air spring the fork is a lot plusher and it handles even better across the small bumps whilst still ramping up really well for the bigger hits. I’ve been super impressed with how good the new Lyrik RC2 rides.Sam Hill

Sam, Ben and the crew from SRAM recently headed down to Australia’s newest mega bike park at Maydena, Tasmania, to spend a couple of days shaking down the new Lyrik RC2 Fork. Sit back, relax, and watch two of our favourite gravity World Champion’s cutting shapes on their trail bikes at warp speed.

"yeah, nope, it's new and red ok, but in fact it's not that crazy compared to last year. I would give a meh+."
Sam HILL.
  • + 11
 Sam Hill deserves a Ribbon.
  • + 24
"Yo Sam, could you run your fork extra soft for these next few runs so we can get some sick slo-mo shots for the press release?!"
  • + 29
I'm sorry what? Brand new damper and a totally new airspring with an oversized negative. What else did you want them to strap to it? A beer holder? Third stanchion?
  • + 30
@RoboDuck: I wish they had come up with a new headset standard. Tapered is so old now. We deserve a metric headset!
  • + 0
@RoboDuck: Coil option is all a lot of people want.
  • + 9
@Minikeum: Reverse taper would be even better for the industry. There could be no cheating with headsets. That way we would all have to buy new frames, guaranteed.

They could market it as "vibration absorbing" or "auto-adjustable wheelbase" when it's really just a more flexible steerer.
  • + 4
@kabanosipyvo: Plus, everyone would have to buy new stems, too.
  • + 13
@RoboDuck: God dammit you need to be quiet. We joke about that now but Sram will do it. They are not scared
  • + 5
 Sram should introduce a 1 1/8 to 1 1/4.99 taper headtube
  • + 1
Best fork on the market right now. Just strung one up.
  • + 4
Have you tried it? Cause i can tell you it is absolutley noticeable vs the older spring
  • + 3
Put one on your bike and comment after... best for me at the moment.
  • + 2
@Jesse221: Agreed here. I have ridden mine only a couple of times but the feel is massively different. They nailed it on this one.
  • + 22
Please get Sam a decent kit to wear. Looks best case like a clown. But chain reaction has always had these ugly things, maybe it’s even intentionally?
  • + 14
TBH most pro outfits are clown suits, DH included. And all of the wannabes in the lift line/instagram for that matter. Only the freeriders have some fashion sense???
  • + 13
needs more chainreaction and mavic logos... lots more
  • + 2
Everyone knows bigger logos take seconds off your Strava times. Just like those 2 rear window stickers on my truck added 5hp.
  • + 6
@MTBrent: all kidding aside, I do like some kind of stickers on the car. It tells the passerby what do you prefer in a way. So the owner or the car itself is not someone drowned in blandness and generics. It is like a sign of recognition or "secret" handshake. If you saw a car with commencal, canyon, hope, raceface, 100%, schwalbe etc stickers you can identify the car owner as a fellow rider and you feel some sense of community. On some other car you might see mares, cressi sun, apex, Bauer etc and conclude thee guy is a scuba diver. I think that kind of personalization is cool and it adds a warm human touch to the bland and generic world we are living in (or st least on some placesWink
  • + 1
Compared to his TLD days in pink and yellow, I'd say these are much better kits.
  • + 1
@Boardlife69: DH riders look good nowdays compared to a few hears ago
  • + 20
Red also makes you 15% faster. It's a fact.
  • + 3
 Absolutely right.
  • + 0
That why gwin rides red YT
  • + 2
 I dig the red.
  • + 3
I like it because it reminds me of the Judy DH I obsessed about and never owned about 20 years ago. 80MM of travel?! That was crazy!
  • + 13
I wonder what Vorsprung thinks of this new airspring. Would it still benefit from a Luftkappe or is it already as good or better with the Debonair?
  • + 2
Think I saw a post somewhere on their insta that claimed the new forks can still benefit from the luftkappe. instagram.com/p/Bi-McNlB-j9
The fork is a 2018 Lyrik I think which I believe has the debonair spring?

@ThomDawson: I would love it to be butterflies and dafodils with the bigger negative spring but I doubt it. Two reviews say that 2018 Lyrik is harsher than 36 in the exact way I experience mine from 2016. I have never heard Debon Air being a ground breaking technology to someone. I've heard way better opinions about Corset for Fox shocks. I just won't buy another Lyrik. I've had 2, they've been great, God bless RS but now...one Helm Coil please - thank you.
  • + 3
@WAKIdesigns: idk about debonair, but the new evol on fox is amazing. It really does soften up the top.
  • + 2
@WAKIdesigns: This is a 2019 Lyrik. Air spring is way different. They hollowed out the shaft to get more neg air volume. 40-50% more neg air volume than 2018’s debonair
  • + 12
@ThomDawson: All I know is that Luftkappe did transform my Pike into something entirely different altogether. It's way more supple off the top, doesn't blow through the travel on hard, repeated hits, and ramps up nicely towards the end of the stroke. My hands don't hurt anymore. 10/10 would recommend.

Oh and RS did claim the negative spring was supposed to be larger with Debonair, doing essentially what Luftkappe does.
  • + 21
@WAKIdesigns: BTW Waki, don't mean to hate or anything, honest to god question: do you have any life outside of commenting on PB? I mean, I see your post under every single article here.
  • + 3
@WAKIdesigns: Funny that I can say the exact same thing about my 2017 36. Two weeks after service is fine and it gets harsher and harsher after that. Only fresh after service it gets close to Lyrik(201Cool plushness and has nowhere near mid support anyway. When I make it plush in the begining it just blows through the travel afterwards. Tokens don't help. Helm Coil ended up on my bike as well and I can't be more happy, it is AMAZING.. Wink
  • + 2
I'm sure Hill has it exactly how he wants/likes it, but doesn't it dive a little too easy/too much?
  • - 2
@Milko3D: I run 110PSI with 2 Tokens at 75kg. Hill weighs 10kg less and used to run like 120PSI with 3 tokens... his suspension is not diving - Earth is under him.
  • + 4
I'm sure they got sprung, cause they noticed that the butt was stuffed??
  • + 2
If you're thinking about getting a new fork, I'd say save yourself some cash and get the Luftkappe. Best $90 US I ever spent on my bike, transformed my old Pike. Takes a couple of rides to dial it in, but huge difference. As far as Fox goes, its seems that RS is always half a step behind.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: Fair enough, it's hard to tell how much force is going through on video and he's an aggressive rider.
  • + 2
@kopaczus: cześć Smile What can be isntalled in yari? If I want to upgrade a bit? Any recommendations?
cheers.
  • + 2
@kopaczus: I think you know the answer to that already
  • + 4
@dj100procentenduro: Cześć! Definitely go with the Luftkappe, I really can't recommend it enough. If you're anywhere close to Katowice, drop by and I can give you those clamps to hold the airshaft in the vice for installation.
  • + 2
@pigman65: Tell me about it. How does he find time to ride his bike?
  • + 6
@kopaczus: I'm a fat, miserable bloke who rides once a month. But it is enough for me to know a lot about mountain biking. I am good at assuming. I bought my carbon bike for insurance money we got after my dad died. Still in the process of getting divorced but can't afford a new apartment as of now, especially hard after getting fired. Depression is a hard disease. Sorry.
  • + 0
@WAKIdesigns: I completely agree. Was just passing on somebody else’s experience. I don’t think there’s anything you can do to an air spring to make it any good when compared to a proper coil spring.
  • + 1
 @dj100procentenduro:
Check novyparts in France
www.novyparts.com/optimisation-novyparts-suspensions-vtt/rock-shox-fourches/splug-et-kit-air-combines.html
You can order the hydraulic kit alone, it is plug and play.
www.novyparts.com/optimisation-novyparts-suspensions-vtt/rock-shox-fourches/splug.html

Maybe he can sold your the air kit too but there is a little work on hardware (like vorpsprung luftkappe) to swap piston - you will need 10 mm clamps to hold the piston rod ans a heat gun to soften the red loctite in order to unscrew the piston from the piston rod.

Most of people are amazed by the hydraulic kit on Yari.
forum.velovert.com/topic/154680-novyparts/page__st__11490

It is in French but you can google tranlsate it.

@WAKIdesigns: you're saying that if I kill my dad I can finally buy a carbon bike?
  • + 2
 @mikeyin19:
Yeah way different.
Exactly the way Fox designed their 36 NA spring back in 2015 with a bushing instead of a crappy seal to interface air shaft and spring base, transfer ports and hollow air shaft for NA, alloy parts everywhere, etc...
People have to figure that Rock shox is 1% R&D and 99% marketing.
I believe that they try to oversimplify their designs in order to make it easier for users to service it, but at the end you cannot have a high performance product with low service intervals and easy to DIY

Didn't say Fox is far better, later I put a luftkappe on my 2016 36 RC2 and there is a substantial gain in support, small bump compliance and less travel is used, without the need to rely too much on LSC.
  • + 1
@vinay New air spring does that same thing the Luftkappe did. More negative volume for midstroke and reduced break-away.
  • + 21
@WAKIdesigns: Hey man, if you're not taking the piss right now I really hope you're doing alright. Depression is indeed a difficult disease. It's something I deal with myself so I can understand what you're going through, especially when you have additional stresses in life. I've always enjoyed your comments and your fantastic illustrations so I hope that means something to you. If you ever want to chat about it I'm happy to do so.
  • + 1
@WestwardHo: He's joking. Don't ever take him seriously, lol.
  • + 2
@SlodownU: agree. I put a Luftkappe in my 36, very happy with it.
  • + 29
@Thustlewhumber: The only thing hurt by being nicer to people on the internet is your own ego. Regardless of whether he's trolling or not I think it's important to show people you give a shit.
  • + 1
I think the new DebonAir shaft was a way to match what Luftkappe was doing to make the forks better.
The new DebonAir shaft is reverse compatible with previous forks. For $42 I bought a 170mm 2019 DebonAir air shaft and put it in my 160 mm 2018 Lyrik. A definite improvement over the previous air shaft. Now my Lyrik is black stealth 2018/19 for half the price of the Luftkappe with 10mm more travel.
  • + 2
@WAKIdesigns: semantics, but Sam Hill does not weigh 65 kg. No chance.
  • + 2
@WestwardHo: I doubt this is something Waki would be joking about. Sadly enough there are more people with a depression who don't tell than those who don't have a depression but say they do. Slamming someone who does come out by saying their faking/joking/trolling/whatever seems like a pretty f*cked up thing to do.

Wacek, ride your bike, take a sauna and then jump in that ice bath. Much better over there, too much bullshit over here.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: Is any of that true?
  • + 1
@Minikeum: dont know why you're being downvoted, that was funny!
  • + 2
 So in a nutshell .. 2018 Lyrik + Luftkappe = 2019 Lyrik?
  • + 3
@tkdbboy: not quiet. The luftkappe gains its negative volume by expaning into the positive chamber. The debonair gains it through some reworking of the stanchion plug and a hollow shaft. So the luftkappe has a more progressive curve (i believe they say its simllar to two tokens). The luftkappe i think still has a stronger negative spring, no math to back that up but since the dome is now acting as the piston and there is no rod attached to the dome ther should be more area, pressure over area and all that. also the luftkappe tops out pnuematicslly, no top out bumper, probably part of having more force.

Both seem to have their pros and cons. I can say my debonair upgrade was really nice improvement for my 2018..
  • + 1
@hamncheez: being fat isn’t at all but the rest is a stretched version of reality. Judging from by PM response I didn’t realize how serious it sounded. You Americans really care. I’m touched. People in Europe are probably like yeah fk you you sad fk! But I’m used to it.

Anyhoo, ride minion DHF maxxgrip people and fk luftkappe... it does good things to older Pikes but with Lyriks it’s a first world problem. And serving those can give you depression while your wife may divorce you if she sees you paid 100$ for a deodorant cap with an oring...
  • + 1
@ThomDawson: I feel like there needs to be some more RnD on the spring side of things to kill off air, some sort of wave spring made of superchromocarboti or something, someone could probably 3d print one I guess. (engineering techy things not my strong point, but I know coil beats air unless your on the scales and I'm sure this could be fixed).
  • + 1
@Jesse221: I'd be surprised if adding a Luftkappe to the 2018 is more progressive than the 2019 Debonair. I removed both tokens from my 2019 and still have a hard time using full travel, at, and even below, the recommended psi.
  • + 1
 .............
  • + 3
@funkendrenchman: oh sht... my bad, I was sure that in this very article it was like 130. At least i remembered tokens right. I personally don't like stuffing the Lyrik with tokens because it dives too much for my likes so I prefer it more linear, even at the cost of small bump sensitivity.
  • + 1
@WestwardHo: respect to you for your compassion man
  • + 2
@WAKIdesigns: I agree. Either way - his settings are ludicrous. I know he's the world's fastest, but my hands hurt just thinking about it.
  • + 2
 @funkendrenchman: then think of Gwinny...
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: so have we clarified Sam’s fork settings? I seem to have missed something, I’m currently riding a Mega so it’s fun to compare. But I’m doing like freeride and have Fox suspension so the fun part is kind of how far off my bike is to his. Im also 3” shorter and 10kg lighter than him (zero muscles) but I think my bars are over an inch higher and we riding the same size.
  • + 1
@Jesse221: Thanks for the explanation! The debonair air spring looks like a bang for buck upgrade (not saying the Luftkappe isn't) ... which leads to my next question, is there much benefit of having the RC2 damper over RCT3? Assuming both have a debonair air spring.
It just seems like MY18 was released with all these improvements, then suddenly MY19 was announced with even more improvements.
Just trying to get my head around how much of it is just exaggerated marketing and what is actually noticeable in real world application.
  • + 3
@tkdbboy: It depends how much you plan to use LSC and HSC. If you keep them open, generally not. If you use a lot of LSC, it’s nice to decouple is from HSC with the new fork. Likewise if you feel like you need an HSC control, the RC2 is the way to go. At 150lbs, I’m running my new Lyrik all the way open.
  • + 1
@funkendrenchman: ah that's fair enough ... so most of the gains in the damper come in the form of adjustability vs overall performance improvement. I'm considering getting a Canyon Torque but just weighing up if it's worth waiting for MY19. Thanks!
  • + 11
"These guys pay me a lot of money, yet their products are really disappointing"
Said nobody ever.
  • + 4
His results also are disappointed. Said nobody ever about the EWS leader...
  • + 8
Rock Shox- how bout' a fork'n decal design contest?
  • + 1
Like Fox is the epitome of graphic design. Brand recognition, brand recognition, brand recognition. It's the only thing that matters.

Another nice visuals edits Matt, you've come far and is it any wonder, building up on your experiences putting out commitment with us locals.... The downunderground trails.... thumbs up to you brother! One of the Moo crew....
  • + 7
can anyone imagine Sam actually saying "whilst"?
  • + 4
Actually, I bet that the whole first paragraph was something like:

- SRAM: What do you think about the new Lyric?

- Sam: “Hmm... its fine I guess”

- SRAM: Lets just transcribe it and add 55 more words
  • + 6
More interested in those tyres tbh...
  • + 1
Right? I see so many cool looking Michelin tyres on pages like these, all under top pros, but go the Michys website and they got shit. How long have we waited for a 2.5 Rock'r 2?
  • + 2
OMG, the Comments on this thread with feed back on how Sam Hill needs to setup his bike. Forks need some a Luftkappe thinginy, chains to long, frame wrong size ect. Wonder how many World Cups, EWS and Word Championships an of these people have won. I know who I will be listening when it comes to advice.
  • + 4
For the latest release, RockShox teams up with Wal-Mart design team to ensure the fork looks right at home on their shelves.
  • + 4
The last time I saw Ben Cory and Sam Hill in one movie was in TIA: This is Australia back around 2007-2009. Crazy.
  • + 1
Is it still only 3 compression clicks? Assuming everyone is the same weight? These guys get their shim stacks adjusted by the factory techs. We get crap. Anyone who's ever spent time on motocross tracks knows there's a reason moto forks have about 22 clicks. Because they use them.
  • + 1
 New RC2 Damper has:
5 x High Speed Clicks
20 x Low SpeedClicks
  • + 2
As a consumer I feel I get products dangled in front of me constantly. I end up drinking beer, because at the end of the day, I'm not the commercial. OK, you sell some knob the world's best skate board, it doesn't mean shit.
  • + 7
You wanna know how I know you end up drinking beer?
  • + 1
@timlake: Lol, to be honest I have a pretty nice bike, shouldn't complain, but I feel it's not much replacement for being all screwed up.
  • + 2
@Kramz: don't worry buddy, most of us are all screwed up. Having a pretty nice bike might not be much of a replacement, but riding it every now and again can help.
  • + 5
 Vorsprung for everyone!
  • + 3
You can always tell when Sam Hill is bored on a trail. If it's wide, bermy and machine made he just looks bored.
  • + 4
 Who can blame him?
  • + 3
Must be why he quit WCDH.
  • + 3
Well, he's never gonna say it's rubbish.
  • + 3
I like the Sam quote, like it was taken from a marketing brochure.
  • + 2
Well knock me dowm with a feather.....a pro rider rides an all new suspension fork! I can't contain my excitement!
  • + 3
Almost sad for me to watch because it doesn’t show how fast Sam is.
  • + 1
Bet you he gets a fresh new fork for every race.
Probably work great after a mechanic has properly rebuilt the fork all fresh and slippery.
Must be nice Smile
  • + 1
I like the drone shots actually, tricky to get that to look different but was cool to see them popping in and out of view through the trees.
  • + 1
Does it still blow thru its travel and ride super low like every other RS fork ?
  • + 1
It sucks when factory riders are forced to ride such hideous looking products
  • + 2
It makes you want to the inside lines more.
  • + 1
I've asked myself the same question, it could be a couple of links shorter imho. Maybe he is looking for a lower chain tension on the higher gears?
  • + 3
 @pads: + bike isn't sag'ed
  • + 1
I think it's just fine, it will stretch a bit when the suspension is in it sag position or even when going deep into it's travel.
  • + 0
oh, c'mon, sag don't take that much. example - Giant reign 2 '16, difference in sag position is almost not noticeable. I mean chain.
  • + 1
@payze: cant take up more than a link (1/2 inch) - not that much chaingrowth with that bike is there?
  • + 2
tell us the secret tricks, you illuminatis

Anyone know the artist and title?
  • + 2
@yourwelcome: Artist: Silent Titan. Track: ‘You Dream Because’

Ride a 29er please Hill. It will sum up all the hype perfectly
  • + 1
Sam Hill doesn't ride the new lyrik! the lyrik succumbs to Sam Hill more like

  • + 1
Why are there so many videos this morning
  • + 1
wonder how it compares to MRP Ribbon.
