Those Minion clones threw off a couple of my guesses! I lack attention to fine details...apparently.
  • + 95
...and anyone who did get the DHF wrong needs to surrender their bike for a 30day penalty.
  • + 39
Yeah if any of these could sell under 50 bucks, that'd be great.
  • + 2
@colincolin: look at continentals new $40 tubeless casing.
  • + 7
@loopie: the DHF was the only one I got right, although I did guess most Maxxis tires to be a Maxxis, just wrong models (that Recon looks a lot like the Ardent)
  • + 1
@loopie: they undercut so fast I forget what a freshie looks like....
  • + 2
@matt-15: I think I saw a Trailking and a Magic Mary but other than that, I didn't try. So yeah, that makes a DNF. I could have looked it up but that would have made it a DSQ. I'm too proud for that.
  • + 1
@loopie: Very true... I've had DHF on all of my enduro bikes and love them
  • + 137
All of them are minions, I don't care about your opinions
  • + 21
 You are such a poet.

 @kookseverywhere well, doesn't sound good, I f*cking hate that

All these fake ass DHF get more flats than Jolanda Neff
  • + 1
 @MTB-Colada: don't he know it.
  • + 88
I know which ones are not a Minion DHF
  • + 81
Very glad maxxis exists so I don't need to score higher than 2-3 on this.
  • + 73
I was like Ardent, Ardent, not Ardent, Ardent, Ardent, not Ardent, Ardent, Ardent, not Ardent, Ardent, Ardent, not Ardent
  • + 17
Don't forget Minion, Minion, Magic Mary, Minion and another Minion!
  • + 31
 Who rides Ardents in 2019?
  • + 34
Ardent is for people who never get into oh shit moments
  • + 14
@colincolin: I do you insensitive clod. It's still available in 26".
  • + 11
 @Dethphist: what is 26 "
  • + 2
@ Alain2: you seem really sure about that....
  • + 6
Ardent is something you give to Gwin or Maes to see if they could win on anything
  • + 7
@lognar: Not true. The Ardent will put you into an oh shit moment. Its how you Make Tame Trails Gnarly Again.
  • + 3
@Boardlife69: Ardent, just like Nobby Nic or anything from Kenda (and almost everything from Continental) is a very polarized affair. The owner is either Shredan Booster or Joey Ohshitmeister. In first case he possibly wears tight jeans and a pisspot, trying to figure out what this whole MTB is about, why does everyone seem so tense and affraid as soon as they see a kicker or a berm, which in his world is the meaining of life, a portal to freedom.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: Nah, that's old Hans Defs
  • + 1
@Dethphist: man, a comma would be helpful here.
  • + 51
 I was waiting for a Smoke/Dart combo.
  • + 5
 Best combo ever.
  • + 8
haha, rocked those hard back in the early nineties. Are they still around??
  • + 4
@islandforlife: Yes, still available! 26 x 2.1", folding bead, tan sidewalls. MSRP ~$50 each.
  • - 1
@islandforlife: Maybe on ebay. They were awesome back in the days.
  • + 12
Tioga Psycho FTW. I also miss IRC missiles.
  • + 0
The Dart is still one of the best front tires ever especially 25 years ago
  • + 12
@MLeslie7: I was a WTB velociraptors guy back in the day.
  • + 6
Onza rip and rail. Can't mistake those.
  • + 7
@santoman: Yes, velociraptors were my favorite too, I was an early adopter and used them until I went to 29" wheels.
  • + 1
I was a xc guy and I was faithful to Geax Arojjo 2.0 Also, I was an early adopter of tubeless and Geax UST tyres with Mavic UST wheels were unbeatable!
  • + 1
@santoman: Nubbins always tore off at the base for me, leaving a big hole.
  • + 1
 @santoman: Front and rear. \m/
  • + 1
Ah, the good old days! IRC Piranha Pro, Ritchey Z-Max and dual compound Maxxis C1160 were my favorites in the mind-nineties.
  • + 3
@dubiousdesigns: ha! my old GT Corrado came with Ritchey Z max's, took years to wear them out!! After that, I put on several sets of IRC Piranha Pro's, decent, and dirt cheap @ MEC, nothing is Dirt Cheap @ MEC anymore.....
  • + 2
 @dubiousdesigns: Farmer Johns LoL
  • + 3
@nozes: Ritchey Megabite Zmax were the first tire I could really lean over. Loved those things!
  • + 1
Loved that pairing. I was a wild gripper guy in the summer xc and the porcupine for sloppy stuff.
  • + 1
Onza porcupine with white rubber and tan sidewalls, 26x1.95. Fast looking XC tire that wore out even faster. Great for SoCal wet clay mud.
  • + 3
Panaracer Fire XC Pro, stepped knobs, low profile and wide, avail in colors... gotta look fast. I found these in 700x32 for my cross bike a few seasons back.
  • + 1
@m1dg3t: I think the "cousins " were better...though farmer John will forever be my MTB hero!
  • + 1
@santoman: OMG I LOVED THOSE!!! I still have those mounted to my old gold KHS team frame, that I am too emotionally attached to to let go.
  • + 1
Okay. I suck. I don't see the panaracer smoke/dart, onZa porcupine, Farmer John (or any of the other family members), nor did I see the ummagumma more extreme or team control/master.
  • + 1
@singletracksurgeon: I'd be somehow attached to the "cousins", but fook I'd be unseparably attached to that KHS team!!!!!
  • + 1
The "cousins" and Farmer John dragged too much.
  • + 1
@oldfut: Ummagumma Pr-control, and more extream for when you absolutely must have the biggest lugs out there.
  • + 1
@pakleni: I have a geax tire on an 823 and it has original Stan's goo in it from 2011 maybe. I cant remember when I put air in it last. And it sits in storage 360 days of year. Never drops. Even through our sh*"'!y cold winters
  • + 2
Even more old skool. Smoke is the back, White Onza Porcupines in the front.
  • + 1
 @FurryCrew:
We rode z-max front and Conti baja rear in the early 90's on our clay based dirt.

I tried the porcupine and took that thing off after 1 ride that had hard pack. Dart felt like it couldn't hook up in the clay.
  • + 34
I'm confused, I thought there were only two mtb tires available, Minions and not Minions...
  • + 3
All Minions, just DHFs and DHRs.
  • + 2
Front Minion, Back Minion and Magic Marys....that's about it.
  • + 24
Imagine the amount of space i'd have in my room for other things if i didn't waste my brain power on knowing tire patterns
  • + 21
tires are too expensive to experiment with so I just stick with the ones I know I like, even though if my tire was up there I probably wouldn't recognize it anyways
  • + 17
I got most of them that have been around long enough to have seen them in person. A good number of these, I don't think most of us have seen anything but pictures and press releases - I know I've never seen a Pirelli or Goodyear bike tire in the flesh, and I have doubts I ever will.
  • + 1
I saw a Goodyear proto and it looks like plastic rubber, very meh...That was this winter in Madrid,Spain so anything is possible IMO!
  • + 2
@homerjm: Not saying they don't exist, just saying I'm not sure enough people will buy them for me to notice. If I had a nickel for every non-maxxis or schwable tire in my riding group, I'd have like 10 or 15 cents.
  • + 2
Good luck scoring well in the quizz without having been a Sea Otter (or a similar trade show) this year. Some of these tires aren't even available yet.
  • + 14
No Michelins? They were showing the DH22 and the new DH34. Available to the public on the 32nd of Never. Actually she said 'next year'. I complained. See picture of treads in my photos.
  • + 5
Not even Wild's in this contest. Just put some on. Happy.
  • + 3
They are waiting for Pluto to enter Uranus before being released. Comes with a pearl necklace.
  • + 2
If it's doesn't come in green rubber don't even bother Michelin....
  • + 11
Shame there wasn't any Vittorias on there. I'm super stoked on their stuff, the graphene and 4 compound tires are pretty awesome.
  • + 0
Maybe it would be too easy to guess because of the sidewall color and the fact they only have 3 All Mountain type models now in the lineup.
  • + 9
When you're not the fastest on a ride it pays to remember tread patterns so you don't get lost.
  • + 9
Maybe if that photo of the Assegai was from behind, I would have guessed it.
  • + 8
Black Rubber Black Knobbly Less Knobbly Minion Minion Knobbly Black Stripey Minion Minion Minion....
  • + 9
Most of those minion clones cost more than minions so why bother?
  • + 7
I put each one on my bike blindfolded and guessed them by performance alone. It was difficult to ride blindfolded.
  • + 1
 SCIENCE!!!!
  • + 5
It would have gotten a better score if more of the old-school tires like the Comp16, Comp24, Comp32, irc KujoDH, Nokian Gazzaloddi, Panaracer Smoke, etc. were in the test.
  • + 4
 Maxxis Mobster
  • + 2
 Anything Tioga IRC el gato
  • + 2
 IRC Missiles
  • + 7
I found completing this a bit tiring
  • + 1
 I'm worn out
  • + 1
@74NZ: Thought it got quite gripping towards the end.
  • + 7
 1 correct answer... Minion DHF...
  • + 3
I have five of these at my tire rack. I would rate the Magic Mary and the Kenda Hellkat as the best. The Assegai looks great but I haven't tried it. The WTB's might be fine but are too damn heavy. Love the Aggressor at the rear except for loose terrain. Don't get all the hype with the DHF. It's got too much rubber at the middle, making it slide all over the place. Current Der Barons are reliably grippy and versatile. But the Magic Mary and the Hellkat really nailed it.
  • + 6
I would have done better with multiple choice.
  • + 2
Did not get Panaracer, didn't know they still existed, also Hutchinson or Vee Tyre, Hutchinson's webshite barely works so who knows what they sell!? Mistook the Kenda semi-slick for the e-13s, should have paid more attention the one on the right
  • + 1
 Got 14 right
  • + 1
I think Hutchinson's tires are like, advertised 2.4, actual 2.1.
  • + 2
I'm a self comfessed tyre fetishist and still got only 12/21! Missed a couple that I shouldn't have, but some were really tricky. I mean, that Panaracer High Roller 2 clone is an exact copy of the original, the guy just reproduced his own design!
Anyway, for me there are two main types of knobby tyres: DHF style and Magic Mary style. Which means: channel or intermediate knobs between side and centre knobs.
  • + 5
I don't notice when my wife has here hair done, what chance have i got here.
  • + 2
 Finally!

All the research I've been doing on choosing tires to replace the tires that came stock on my bike is paying off Smile .

Only got about half actually correct though. Others I got the brand but not the model (Continential, a few Maxxis), and a few of the others threw me for a loop. Specifically, the Kendas look really similar to WTB tires to me. Especially the Hellkat Pro, it looks almost identical to a newer WTB Vigilante (but with maybe a bit shorter side lug).
  • + 1
problem is most of these tires have not been out long enough to score high. Unless you are studying press releases. And some of the angles that the pictures were taken did not help. Hell I was thrown off by the Magic Mary just because of the angle.
  • + 3
heyyyy my schwalbe table top tire is missing! 12 years and still going strong ! believe it or not dirt jumping and 26 inch is still alive ! Smile
  • + 4
Anyone have time on the new Kenda Nevegals? Thats all I rode back in teh day, and i hear the new ones are good again.
  • + 1
They’re crap. They appear to be made out of plastic instead of rubber, and anything even remotely damp becomes a deathtrap.
  • + 2
Been riding the Nevegal X Pro and my favorite rear tire so far. Over a year with plenty of park days and tread is still solid. And it does well in wet and muddy conditions. I noticed that I can climb tech way better on this tire. Going to try the Hellkats next.
  • + 3
Yes, been riding the Nevegal 2 (NOT the X Pro) on the rear. They are definitely made out of rubber and have been a solid choice for me for the past 2 seasons. They hold up great in most conditions, good mix of rolling resistance and grip.
  • + 2
I've got Nevegal 2 27.5x2.6 and they are pretty awesome. I just switched to the Hellkats.
  • + 2
Goodyear and Scorpion were throwing me off, but got most Maxxix, Schwalbe, WTB and Kenda tires. Checkout the Kenda Hellkat Pros if you get a chance. They are nice! WTB has good ones as well.
  • + 1
The brand is Pirelli, the models are called Scorpion.
  • + 4
Tire 5. New tire designed by the guy who penned the Highroller, then decided the High Roller II did everything better.
  • + 2
It's a high roller clone. Seriously whats the dif?
  • + 2
@freestyIAM: Compared to the High roller II this tire has the little notch on the inside leading edge of every side knob. The HRII just has it on every other knob. That is the only difference I can see.
  • + 1
I got 14 or 15... those new Panaracers and Pirellis, and I think the Vee? and maybe one Hutchinson or something threw me. Still pretty sure #6 is a Butcher. Wink Guess that's why they said new tire, not new design. Wink
  • + 1
Funniest part is I haven't owned or ridden any of them. lol Well ok, I rode a friend's original 26" DHF once for some yards, but...
  • + 2
@mtbikeaddict: dude, you've really never ridden minions? Go get a pair and start living.
  • + 2
@freestyIAM: I'm poor Frown lol Wink . If it's a choice between new tires and saving for a bike, I'm trying to get the bike
  • + 3
It's a good thing nobody is trying to get any meaningful data out of that survey...
  • + 2
 Don't care, Don't care, Don't care, Don't care, Don't care, Don't care, Don't care, Minion, Don't care, Don't care, Don't care.............
  • + 1
My brother's Rocky Altitude came with Minions. They had such terrible rolling resistance that we joked he didn't even need brakes lol. He switched to Hellkats and damn! I could barely keep up. We'll never ride Maxxis again.
  • + 2
Got the only 3 I've ever ridden. And their the only 3 I'll ever need #bikeparkdirtbag
  • + 1
My question is would I recognize my new tires? One-On Chunky Monkeys. Much more knobby than I thought they would be from the pictures.
  • + 3
I want some Minions with yellow side walls the "Bannannaaaaaa" edition.
  • + 3
Thread spotting is one of my favorite games out on the trail!
  • + 2
Never understood the hype about minions. Tried them and wasn't thrilled with them at all. Maybe I'm missing something
  • + 9
Go really really fast down some sketchy terrain. Then you’ll find out why they’re great.
  • + 5
 blasphemy
  • + 2
@Unrealityshow: true story- and they roll nicely for such a nobby beasty.
  • + 2
My experience too. Didn't like the on/off switch, went to a rounder profile.
  • + 1
@rollingdip: LOL. I don't like the DHF much because it's too round (good grip on the middle section but starts faltering after that). I guess it depends a lot on rim width.
  • + 2
I got 2 correct and when I clicked on the answer, I still didn't recognize about a third of the manufactures.
  • + 2
I'm pretty sure 16 is the same tire as 7 and not the one listed in the answer.
  • + 1
I was thinking the same thing. That's definitely not a Kaiser
  • + 3
Where's the mighty gazzi from like, 2003? Lol
  • + 2
TIL: If it isn't made by Maxxis, I have no idea what it is.
  • + 0
that's the most American thing I've read today
  • + 1
@colincolin: Don't let this be the example of us... many of us are much more open minded!
  • + 1
Oh. Wow. I didn’t know there where so many bike tire manufacturers, I thought it was just Maxxis and Kenda!
  • + 1
What’s bad is when you own the tires & still don’t get them correct.
  • + 2
I got 14 right, I honestly thought I would do way worse
  • + 2
Hellkats are the best. Switched from minions and I'll never look back!
  • + 2
I agree, they are great! I'm testing them out for Kenda and will have a solid long term review coming out in a couple of months. The Nevegal 2 is sweet as well.
  • + 2
Friends don't let friends ride Maxxis #TerreneTires #Chunks
  • + 2
Couldn't even pick the Ass-Guy...And i'm running one!
  • + 3
 Where's the porcupine
  • + 2
That DHF seems like an unknown tire more people should run!
  • + 1
Yooo PinkBike is savage for the opening text of this article. Calling out all the "PinkBike Engineers" hard. I love it
  • + 2
Got the Aggressor, DHF, and Mary. Thats it.
  • + 1
This would be more interesting if the article was "Guess Tire Brand and Model by Looking at Tire Tracks."
  • + 2
Damn that Rekon... Never been plus size fan.. Guessed Ikon
  • + 3
 No yellow kirin?
  • + 2
I thought they were cheng shin tires bruv
  • + 2
 KENDA NEVEGRIPS GOT ROB!!
  • + 2
The Nevegal 2 is a pretty good tire. I had the 27.5x2.6 on for a while.
  • + 1
18 Minnion or minnion clones, a Conti, a magic mary, and WTB new Magic Mary clone.
  • + 1
schwalbe magic mary that’s all i care about.
  • + 0
Zero correct, although I still think that number 11 is a Hans Dampf and not a Magic Mary.
  • + 2
A lot of these “look” like Specialized Purgatory and Butcher tires, a testiment to how good Specialized treads are, especially in the 2.6 size.
  • + 1
A few of these also look like Minions DHFs and DHRs. I will try them some day when my Schwalbes run out of tread.
  • + 2
 Im gunna buy minions
  • + 1
Not one tire that I ride is pictured...failed this quiz.
  • + 1
 Still riding Spesh Purgatory!!
  • + 1
3/3 where it matters, what are all these other baloney skins for anyways?
  • + 1
Except that Albert King's guitar is named "Lucy"....
  • + 2
But it is a Flying V...
  • + 2
 No Freakin Clue!
  • + 1
Got a solid 5! Had no clue on the other 15
  • + 1
Most of them looked like a Hans Dampf to me
  • + 1
Am I too old that I wanted to guess Smoke and Dart for half of them?
  • + 1
Maxxis was easy to guess - all others have no clue.
  • + 1
When can I get the Griffus?
  • + 2
 No Farmer John
  • + 1
 His cousin wasn't invited either...
  • + 1
 Tioga Psycho or GTFO
  • + 1
 I guess I’m a newbie.
  • + 1
 I can't
  • + 1
 Minimumminion
