Danny Hart's Mondraker Summum

Danny Hart's Mondraker Summum has been very good to him. He dominated the last half of the 2016 season and lines up at Lourdes this year with the number two plate and is the crowd favorite as the one man who can dethrone Aaron Gwin. PB photographer Ross Bell photographed Hart's Summum in the pits as Hart's mechanic, Christian Schindler, was finishing up the build, where he got the inside line on Danny's component selection and bike setup.

Mondraker Summum
165mm Shimano Saint cranks, e*thirteen LG1 guide and Crankbrothers' new DH Race pedals.

Mondraker Summum
Saint calipers with finned brake pads. Hart prefers to use 203mm rotors all 'round.
Mondraker Summum
11 x 25 cassette with the larger three cogs blocked out. The chain is as short as possible.

Mondraker Summum
Danny has small hands, so he sets his levers very close to the handlebar grips.

Hart's biggest switch this season is from SRAM to Shimano. Tip to toe Saint drivetrain and braking components, with 165mm crankarms and an e*thirteen chain guide. Fox remains on board for suspension—with modified internals for 2017, and Hart will be rolling on Maxxis tires on DT Swiss aluminum wheels. A close look at his bike gives the impression that Hart's setup is all about consistency, and in fact, mechanic Christian Schindler says that Danny prefers to use one suspension tune for almost every venue throughout the season.

Mondraker Summum
Hart also switched from SRAM's Quarq to a Stages Power Meter. The compact Stages sensor is glued to the inside of the left crankarm.

Mondraker Summum
70 psi and a new, secret damper. Five volume spacers.
Mondraker Summum
450-pound spring, also with secret internals.

Mondraker Summum
Personalized anti-mud mask on the arch.

Mondraker Summum
Velcro is applied anywhere the chain can make noise.

Mondraker Summum
Renthal Super Tacky grips wired on, without glue.
Mondraker Summum
Low crown—only one, 10mm spacer.

Mondraker Summum
Danny runs his saddle as low as he can.

Mondraker Summum
Renthal Carbon bar with a custom, 9-degree back-sweep

Mondraker Summum
DT Swiss EX 471 aluminum wheels...
Mondraker Summum
...And Maxxis Shorty tires, at least for now.

Mondraker Summum
Mondraker's Summum has to be one of the better-looking bikes on the World Cup circuit.

The secret is drinking from puddles. You will see the way someday.

Does anyone know the story behind the name?
It just sounds like summum is mumbling.
.....actually it sounds like Danny Hart might have named it.

@scary1: I think it's just a marketing spelling of the word "summon"
  • + 6
@IamTheDogEzra: It's no longer a secret after Bruni did it at Rotorua. Smile

Danny Hart and Loic Bruni, continue to run 25mm internal rims, yet supposedly we all need super wide rims to keep up to trend. DT EX471 the rim that will not die, even without a tyre!
  • + 18
I've tried a few rim widths in the last year or so and found that 35mm internals created so much drag I wanted to give up and hit the pub 5 mins into the first ride (and not just going uphill) so I went down to 29mm and it was a pretty good compromise but being a small guy, not so powerful on the bike, I feel it when things are working against me. The next pair will be 25mm I think, back to where I started!
  • + 9
@ThomDawson: Yep, I got the new Hope Tech 35w for my GT Sanction. It is only good when descending. I prefer Easton Arc 27s everyday.
  • + 6
Ya man keep shoulder knobs on the shoulders. They care about leaning the bike over hence the rim widths they're running
  • + 7
Loving my 27mm. So many fast guys in my area running in the mid to high 20's. Tried some 35's and found them comfy but vague. For speed and control, seems the former is the way to go.
  • + 1
Mostly the wide rims are for XC / enduro / trail where the weight and low-pressure advantages are more valuable.
  • + 8
@magiko9: Really? I destroyed my Easton Arcs in mere hours. If they work for you that's rad, but those hoops just do not last for me.
  • + 4
right now i'm loving my EX471 more then ever, light for aluminum and super strong against the rocks and drops....and most imported Danny and Bruni on it among many other world cup racers
  • + 3
@ttrevorbacon: I guess I was lucky or you were not. Everyone says that Mavic EX729 rims are bombproof for instance, but I always manage to wreck them in just a couple rides.
  • + 6
... and he's running 2.5" tyres on those skinny rims!
  • + 4
@jdsy2154: S#$t yeah. I'm on 25mm internals and 2.5 minions, grip central with speed Smile

Do you want to know a secret?

What's good for the pros isn't necessarily whats good for everyone else

For a rider with small hands, Danny sure does have massive balls.
  • + 46
They feel massive to him because he has small hands! Wink

That machine looks like its poised and ready to jump out of the start gate.
Just needs that mental pilot on board.
Really hope Danny cleans up this season, the end of last year was something special, its been a while since i've seen a rider ride like that Danny and to some degree Laurie both have this riding style that both looks completely on the knife edge of grip and at the same time completely understated. you look at what the bike is doing then you look at what the riders body is doing and it just dosnt seem to correlate. its impressive, i really hope danny comes into the season with that same fire and the same edge that he had last year!.
  • + 3
Really does look awesome doesn't it
  • + 18
Alloy rims? No way can he finish in top 10 without carbon.
  • + 16
Fascinating that the spring has secret internals.
  • + 2
That is the true reason for the hollowed out spring, not weight savings... ????????
  • + 15
I thought the Summum was going to be 29er for Lourdes but apparently not - although there's no wheel size listed?
  • + 7
 It's 27.5"
  • + 6
 He's running 27.5x2.5
  • + 4
I reckon they've almost certainly been experimenting with one, could be their riders preferred the 27.5 bike or maybe it's just not ready yet.
  • - 1
 na
  • + 2
yeah, i'd heard the same rumor.
  • + 2
I think that was based on the release photo that Fox did for the 49. It had the shadow of a Mondraker in the background. I too expected Danny Hart to be on a 29er. Must not be ready as already mentioned.
  • + 4
@jojotherider1977: they also have super tall French guy in their team who's name I can not spell, maybe he is on the 29er? 3rd at world champs last year.
  • + 7
@robway: Florent Payet, I would think he would be the one on a 29er as he's a giant, while Danny and Laurie are pretty small
  • + 6
@kevin267: Nailed it - for somebody Danny's size (and Laurie), that makes tons of sense. For Florent, he would probably even make an XL Summum-29 still look proportional, so I'm waiting to see that... after such a breakout year for Payet, I can't wait to see if he goes even faster on equipment that is proportionally sized.
  • + 1
Look at the bar to saddle height on Danny's bike. Now consider how much higher the bar would be with 29er wheels! Guy might run out of seat tube room.
  • + 2
Mondraker and Trek tricked Santa to deliver the first presents and watch how it goes...

 That bike looks loooooooong

@Wouldhaveletmego: look inside your maw for something even bigger
  • + 3
@Wouldhaveletmego: How'd you get the Giant Reign wheel base to fit in there?
  • + 6
Interesting that they used to run Sram with Fox sus, usually it looks like Sram enforces wholesale deal with Rock Shox suspension...
  • + 6
Can't be positive about orange forks, I thought that was last years thing, time for a change Fox
  • + 5
I totally agree. They look awful on 90% of the bikes.
  • + 3
And especially here, with the red print on the frame. Laurie's Machine, with black lowers look much better imho. Smile
  • + 5
 @RichardCunningham

The mechanic is named Christian Schandl - how hard can it be look up a name on the team website and I also guess you were talking to Christian in person
  • + 6
I hope Danny is as ready as his bike!
  • + 4
Orange fox stuff is killing me.
  • + 3
Finally the Saint groupo is updated!
  • + 3
Renthal needs to release those bars with them angles.

5mm from the grips. Same, I got small hands too. People look at me like I'm a gaper when they notice, now I can tell em the world No.2 has his the same!
  • + 3
I also use those grips. So basically I am Danny Hart and therefore faster than Gwin.
