Katy Winton hails from Scotland, where she first earned a reputation as a fierce cross-country competitor and more recently, as a ripper on the EWS circuit. Winton, who rides for Trek Factory Racing's enduro squad alongside Casey Brown, sat down before practice sessions began at the Canadian Open EWS at Crankworx for a bike check and a chat with PB photographer Matt DeLorme about her setups for the race.

lots of electronics in the cockpit. Winton rides a Shimano Di2 transmission and keeps track of the race on a Garmin GPS computer.

What suspension are you running at Whistler?

A Fox X2 shock and a Fox 36 up front.- absolutely amazing, I’ve been loving it this year, especially here at Whistler. it’s so blown out, so rough, so many holes and they’re just eating it up.

Any special setups or components?

I have a ten mil' spacer below the stem for this race. It lifts me up a little bit. I have Saint brakes, and I’ve got a 34-tooth chairing on as well, because I’m a beast!....No, because the hills are so steep that you’re going to walk up them anyway. I want a bit more oomph on the downhill. And, I have a 46 by 11 cassette.”

What about those wheels?

Line Elite 30 rims on a new wheel from Bontrager. It's a slightly wider rim, which has been in development for a while and we’ve hit gold with them now.

Lighter than aluminum?

That’s the secret question, isn’t it?

Tell us about your cockpit setup.

Even though I’m front the UK, I run my brakes with the right-hand as the rear brake. I also run my right-hand lever slightly higher than my left-hand lever. I broke my right-hand wrist and I like it like that. I also run the bite point of the right-hand lever – my back brake – farther out than my front brake, because who needs a front brake? I just makes you slow.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about your bike?

This bike gives me the confidence to hit lines...to hit scary stuff that I’ve never hit before, and I think that’s what makes this bike my best friend.
