Troy Brosnan and his custom painted Whistler Crankworx edition Specialized Demo 8

Troy Brosnan was hanging out at Lift Coffee in Whistler Village with the Demo 8 that the folks at Specialized customized for Whistler Crankworx this year. Brosnan's kit and helmet were also matched to the bike - down to his shoes. Beyond the paint scheme and the fancy kit, Specialized decked out Troy's race bike with color-matched anodized titanium and aluminum hardware. Brosnan's customized kits and race bikes have become a signature trademark this season.

Annnnndddd the rent Renthal's color ruins it again. Haha
  • 5 3
Never understood why they didnt propose other colour choices!
  • 8 4
@RedBurn: they've been that way for 20+ years and are the only bar that can be noticed just by their color. Why change it just so joeys can color coordinate their bikes? That's played out anyways.
  • 4 6
@FindDigRideRepeat: imo its a fail! No doubt they would sell more if more colours were available! Do you particully want your bar to be recognized ? Big Grin joeys joke was good buddy!
  • 4 4
@FindDigRideRepeat: I mean black is played out AF right?!

Calling people Joey's and whatnot...gtfo
  • 6 1
@RedBurn: I don't care if the bars I have are easily recognized, but renthal does. It's good marketing.
  • 4 2
Renthal's color is the result of using type III hard anodizing on all their parts opposed to type II used on most others. Type III is much harder than type II and cannot be colored to the same effect as type II. Type III is what you see on fork stanchions prior to any surface coating. I'll take tougher ano over pretty colors any day.
  • 1 0
 @FindDigRideRepeat: unless its black
  • 1 0
 @b-mack: rad info.seriously......
  • 1 0
@stacykohut: thanks bro, nice to let out all this crap in my brain and let others use it once in awhile...
FYI, type III Is also significantly thicker than type II which is another reason it's so tough.
  • 1 0
@b-mack: being thicker do you have to take that into account when doing cnc parts?

tolerences?
  • 1 0
@b-mack: there are stanchion colors of all sorts. Why don't they all look like Renthals?
  • 3 0
 @b-mack: www.anodizeusa.com/anodizing-systems-hard-coat.php

You can make it whatever color you like?
  • 1 0
@stacykohut: I would assume they would have to as the difference is pretty significant (.002" vs .0006 I've seen listed) but the thickness can be controlled to a degree as well. Precision machined surfaces are not usually anodized for this reason (i.e. pressed bearing bores, etc..)
  • 1 0
@schofell84: it's my understanding that type III can be colored to an extent but it doesn't produce the bright, popping colors of type II. It often ends up dull and thin. Plus there's an "industrial cool" to the natural color of type III that a lot of manufacturers play on for sure.
  • 1 0
@schofell84: type III hard ano is that "dull gold" color typical of quality aluminum stanchions. Some cheap stanchions are simply steel with a type of black oxide to keep it from rusting or chrome plating. Aluminum stanchions can be plated with nickel (Marzocchi), or hard anodized and then top coated with kashima, secret black stuff, or other secret espresso stuff (fox, rs, marzocchi).... There's lots of ways to skin a cat but type III hard ano forms the base for the aluminum stanchions because it toughens up the material so it can take the wear of seals and bushings running on them. This is all at least my understanding....a lot of these treatments are pretty proprietary and secretive so it's possible they are combining them into single treatments.
  • 1 0
@b-mack: kasima just mixes in molybdenum disulfide to the ano bath from what I understand. The large molybdenum elements fill in the porosity of the hard ano surface while making tiny catch pools for oil to colllect. The rockshox black ano is just a color treatment- black is the easiest color to dye type III ano.

I think the marzocchi stuff is a teflon based secondary treatment. From what I understand on motorcycles this is sometimes considered inferior to just type III in the long run. I am not sure that is completely relevant to MTB since all our bushings are covered in teflon, not super precise metal machine work like motorcycles.

There is also black diamond treatment, the longest lasting and best overall, but it costs more than MTB forks to have done.

I know this is not a review, but it would be awesome to include the following info when doing bike checks:

Rider height & weight
Frame size
Tire pressure (if they want to give that info out)
Suspension set up (if they want to give that info out)

We love these articles for the details, and it would be awesome if PB could include these details every time.

Hugz & kissez Smile

yeah Pinkbike, what the hell? Reach, wheel base and cs length or gaeeeeet ooout! Big Grin

Ka-brap I'm not sure he knows his suspension setup as well as his mechanic and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that... I'd rather see a good video from testing session with Troy and RS tech guys.

Can someone explain to me what's so good about Renthal bars compared to other brands?
  • 2 1
Gwin uses them. Oh and braaaaap!
  • 1 0
It comes down to the attention to detail they pay to tuning the flex characteristics. All of their bars ride the same from aluminum 31.6 to carbon 35's and they are not harsh like Easton and others.
  • 1 0
@salespunk: They feel right and add that moto touch to any build.
  • 1 0
@Schy: I'm guessing not like "carbon" right, but still better than "regular" alloy ones, or you're not talking about some kind of dampening capabilities?

Since feeling "right" is pretty subjective, It's impressive that so many riders have the same great opinion about Renthal bars, which is what makes me wonder how do they do it.
  • 1 0
 they say renthal
  • 1 0
@Deartist7: They put a ton of testing in, ride them all and get subjective feedback. Then the do the same process all over again and again and again.

Finn iles is on the same frame isn't he??

What are the benefits of Ti bolts?

I get some bolts corroding annoyingly often (don't live far from the ocean, plus I sweat a ton and it gets everywhere) and would be tempted to get some if only for the corrosion resistance. Right now my stem bolts, seat post clamp, and lock on grips are the places where I could use them really. Not sure the price would be worth it over buying replacement steel bolts.

Also, that bike is incredible. I love the new paint jobs he gets on his bike so often. What is especially crazy, aside from the frequent frame paint jobs, is all the accessories that go with it! Shoes and jerseys and helments oh my!

Amazing how much money the big companies spend hooking up their riders with really cool custom bikes!!! It's be even cooler to see a gallery with all these custom bikes, from all brands
