After a busy year of racing, Nikolas Nestoroff is back in SoCal and really making himself at home. In this video, Nik demonstrates an average day Laguna Beach, CA looks like.
Awesome, another posting of riding illegal trails, in an area where the land managers are considering closing the entire park to bikes due to all the poaching. Thanks everyone.
It's a backwards place... bike shops even tell you the good trails are "illegal" and "show and tell only"... it's not just Laguna, it's most of Orange County.
Pics and vids of said trails in media aren't new(many featured lag rads-whom built all trails over the years)...what is new and disrupting is the strava/instagram/utube using look at me guys...and of course, over population and best bikes ever.
Another illegal trail video posted for the world to see, meanwhile park management wants to seriously consider banning bikes from all trail access in Laguna.
@jcav5: It's the same in western NC, but we don't make edits of our secret trails..... You literally have to be beaten into a gang to be shown some of them. Way easier to hide when you have trees though.
@jrocksdh: Interesting, I was wondering if the trails were there before it was an official park. The current situation is just unfortunate and public postings don't help us bikers show the new land managers that we actually care about working with them.
@jrocksdh: As far as geography is concerned, SoCal is a cool place... it's the masses of people and regulation that has ruined it. There used to be a ton of cool stuff that is now covered by townhomes, shopping malls, and freeways...
@jcav5: isn't it ironic. Many of the big ol lefty environs in power love all this big build up of modern day projects (high rise luxury condos they call them) that then take land and create more people around to use up the sensitive resources...I'd say it's bizarre but I know the ends justify the means for these types...and that is power(from taxes and new voters). Time to escape to Utah
@TimnberG: ya many of the of Laguna rads and friends road motos there on the cattle ranch...then came the lsd counter culture, boy scouts(hence the jamboree street name) and all that. Lots of good history there, but the big money anti bike powerhouses don't care. Park ranger who grew up elsewhere and has no clue doesn't care. Luckily there's a group of young kids in Laguna that seem interested.
@jrocksdh: Nice! I appreciate the background info. I'm seriously considering finding a way to get involved and see if us mountain bikers can start to work together with the land managers and see what can be done. It's such a cool place (nothing like it around here), and it'd be a shame to keep losing trail access.
@nvranka: It's definitely better than nothing, but it's ridiculous that the good trails are illegal. It's good to be thankful for what you've got, and it's better than having no trails... but it's frustrating that there is potential for great trails but land managers won't let us have them. Why tf is Marie Calendars closed? Habitat Degradation according to the sign? Give me a break, the whole trail parallels the 73, the destruction has been done... lots of study's show that 100 yards either direction from a major roadway disturbs the habitat... what is a mtb within that area going to hurt...
@jcav5: mc is cal trans land for most part. Main issue with Laguna is that there's about 5 agencies that have authority...good luck getting that many .gov plus bug money leftist elitist anti mtg hippie type residents (whom donate big $ to lcf) to agree on land use.
@jrocksdh: OK I did not know that. I guess we northerners think of everything behind the Orange Curtain as right-wing country. What's the name of your airport again? Oh yeah - John Wayne
@endlessblockades: Laguna Beach and Santa Ana are as left as you can go in the OC. Left for different reasons and demographics, but way left. Once Sanchez won back in the 90's, OC has been on a slow move to the left for sure.
@bhowl: T-Sage is awesome & I loved Lemonade to death. But do you really think he originated this creative style? Skateboarders did it 5 years earlier. Fashion designers did it 5 years before that. Abstract artists did it another 5 years prior. The list goes on. This is one more link in the chain fellas, and that's actually the way it oughta be. "great artists steal". so I will prolly steal it too..
Saw him doing those last two sections on Art School in real time. That huck over the bushes is full send. Totally understated in video, but we all know how that is. In any case, it opened my eyes to some line choices on a lot of the local tracks here in OC. Opening my mind to make those choices is a different matter. Geez, seeing him live was very impressive. So much skill and control. Blew my mind. Wow!
@jrocksdh: Oh, you mean the one you can see from a major highway near an art school if you're not blind? Give me a break dude. It's not like the repo man met me at Marie Calenders to talk about why I decided to have a beer stop at the burnt stump while we debated whether silver surfer could use a good telonics before going to the dog park outside of his back door. All I can say is don't ask, don't tell. Send me to hell or Valhalla or give me a direct dial to the devil himself. Now if only I had a golden nugget to buy a holy mackerel before I go...
Oh good, a video shot on Telonics, not many of those? ;( Some sick off camber counter steering on Silver Surfer and that jump on Art School...WHHAT! Wowza.
Great another none Laguna local posting a video like they are. Also good job posting a video riding illegal trails. Why not show how to get to them like @RichieSchley did.
endlessblockades- They were originally(IIRC, the school was founded in the early '30s) called the 'Breakers', but a short time later because of the Pageant Of the Masters etc., the student body voted to change the nickname to the 'Artists'. In the early 2000's the students voted to change it back to the original 'Breakers'
@YoKev: Right on - a couple of my friends grew up there (who were Artists in both senses). They also said the sports mascot was a stereotypical 'Artist' with a paint palette and a beret!
Next thing you know, someone will name a tire "Telonix"

There are of course so many unsanctioned incredibly fun trails, but let’s be real...plenty of good shit to ride within bounds too.
That said, I agree that attracting unnecessary attention and traffic is f*cked.
I just love the whole park. So lucky to have it.
Use the field. You'd def need to be around some old school types that pass that along. ...and now ya know
The local High School sports team used to be called the Laguna Beach Artists. Right?
