N1NO The Hunt for Glory Chapter 12 - NEW BIKE DAY - Video

There are few brands in cycling with as long and successful a history of MTB racing as SCOTT. We have been at the forefront of off-road bike racing for over 20 years, and we are constantly willing to go further, do better and to push boundaries. Every step leads to another building a solid base from which SCOTT’s design teams can develop and create tomorrow’s inspiring products. We have equipped the winners of World Cup Overalls, World Championships and Olympic medals with best tools for their trades for ages. Nino Schurter, one of the most promising athletes for the Olympic podium in Rio is no exception.

When a new bike comes into existence, the process from initial designs to first tests and eventually competition is a multiple year genesis. For race bikes, consulting with the teams is the very first step. Design studies are the next step in the process. When first prototypes are approved by our R&D, the final 3D design process starts. Initial tests in our labs give us an idea of how stiff the frames will be. From there, we get prototypes to test. Once the results of the lab match our frame goals, our racers get to test the bikes out on the trails. From here, production is still a ways away.

The most inspiring source for all development is our broad range of high level race teams. With World Champion Nino Schurter and the SCOTT-Odlo MTB Racing Team, SCOTT has some of the best Cross Country athletes in the world at its disposal. When it comes to designing new bikes, there is no better feedback than listening to the needs of World Cup racers. From all new concepts to little details, our riders come to us with high demands. With World Cup courses becoming more and more demanding, our riders need their bikes to become more and more capable, not only with regards to performance, but especially in terms of increased comfort.

Looking at our latest iterations of the Scale and Spark, we indeed listened carefully. And both the new Scale and Spark are not only the lightest and stiffest in its class, but also provide better kinematics and better suspension. The Scale achieves this through an updated race geometry and SDS2 technology, while the Spark has an entirely new suspension platform. We delivered just exactly what it takes to win World Cup races.

With the new generation of Scale and Spark, we also felt the time had come to grow the family of RC bikes. The 2017 Racing Concept, or RC, collection of dedicated race bikes is comprised of the lightest SCOTT Mountain bikes ever built. With a weight of 849g, the Scale RC 700 SL frame sets a new benchmark for hardtail mountain bike frames. So does the Spark with its frame weight of only 1749g (incl. shock and hardware). All of the RC models are optimized for 1x drivetrain systems. Thanks to the Boost standard, all of our 1x-optimized RC frames are even stiffer than ever before. The new RC family consists of 34 high-end race-dedicated models. This selection features the lightest carbon composites utilized by SCOTT, and leaves nothing to be desired. The RC family includes all options – hardtail or full-suspension, and 27.5” or 29” wheel size geometry. All models come with 100mm travel.

The Spark is the first XC race bike I think I have ever seen that looks like it could be a ripper of a trail bike with the right build...
  • 6 0
Because it is. Have a look at Spark Plus. It looks mentally capable!

The Pivot 429SL is another one.

But Nino has been racing on a 650b.
Wouldn't make sense to make it available to the public?
  • 15 0
@enrico650: Both sizes, 27.5" and 29" will be available.
  • 3 1
@enrico650: Last race in France, he rode on a 29". Check out the Scott link, his new WC beast a 29" hardtail. Looks like he'll be racing on (or trying out?) a 29". Well, i assume he already tested his 29" prototype. However, from the results of La Bresse, he'll be better of riding his 650b which he is very familiar with.

@rcexsequor: yeah in a GMBN video their designers were saying part of the reason he rode 27.5 was for the lower front end. Sounds like they did a few things to get the 29ers slammed down more and now he may start riding them.

 @SCOTT-Sports: More choices, awesome!
  • 1 0
Agreed. "Burly" almost never comes to mind when it comes to xc bikes but, sure as shit...
  • 2 0
@SCOTT-Sports: when is the release of the 2017 Genius LT? I'm a proud owner of the 700 tuned - the bike absolutely rips uphill and down - and have been awaiting the new model.
  • 17 1
I like how the winning bike " today's fastest" presented by shimano is a Sram bike.
  • 1 0
 Fast is fast.
  • 8 0
With guys like Nino and all these awesome XC/Trail bikes showing up I'm pumped to see the next few years of XCO events. Was never a huge fan of XC racing but as of last year and especially this year I'm all in just as much as I am all in with DH racing.

They have made so much progress with making the WC xc courses gnarly again and actual mountain biking, and then the olympics revert back to the man-made machined rollers. Kind of unfortunate, since I am sure they had some available terrain in the mountains around Rio.
  • 2 0
Yup, Tijuca would have made for an epic venue. They have some great terrain, views, some north shore type wooden decks (but safer for the lycra folks). Its only about 45 min from the downtown area. I have no idea about personal safety and all that though. Its also in the jungle with skeeters and the like.

Since when Olympics had anything to do with action sports... the moment you put freestyle snowboarders with cross country skiers and figure skaters to one and the same bag of ideological approach to sport, you end up with something like Iggy Pop playing polo. Same with Mountain Biking and relay. WTF... off course it's going to demoralize the sport that stands against everything Olympics is. How does sharp rocks and mud bath go together with a guy dressed like a sperm running with olympic torch...
  • 4 1
 The Olympics sucks.
  • 3 0
 @WAKIdesigns: "iggy pop playing polo"
LMFAO......... gold!

 waki for president
  • 6 0
what a champ, still can't believe that sprint finish against Absalon - so damn brutal!
  • 3 0
The man is unstoppable. Now that he has a newer lighter and stiffer bike he'll be on his way to his 5th year of being the UCI XCO champ~
  • 5 1
9th pic ...get a dropper, you'll love life, be more happy, and much faster.
  • 16 1
And I'm sure the dominant rider / fastest descender on the XCO World Cup circuit thanks you for that opinion :p
  • 3 0
He has run em before. Certain tracks it's almost necessary now but for most of the tracks the new species of XC full suspension bikes has already made the descents that much better and the need to run a weight penalty that could possibly fail isn't worth the risk.
  • 1 0
@brockfisher05: I'm sure he uses them all the time in training and trail riding. However, I've never seen Nino race a World Cup with a dropper, and I'm not aware that he's used one at any other major XCO event.
  • 2 0
@wingguy: I went back and looked, and no, you are right. It was Absalon who had been starting to run a dropper here and there. I think I got confused when the commentators were talking during Albstadt race I remember a discussion about droppers.

cheers.
  • 3 0
@brockfisher05: in any case, I think we'll see a dropper on Nino's steed pretty soon if Absalon keeps riding the way he's been riding. He's at a point where he's no longer losing time to Nino on the descents, which was a huge advantage for Nino last season. You can tell Absalon has worked hard on his descending - if he keeps it up Nino will have to think hard about weight vs trying to gain the advantage on downhills again.
  • 2 0
Nino can't really gap Absalon on the descents anymore and by not running a dropper he's getting a lot of flats. He'll have no option but to use one soon. As amazing a rider as he is he can't make up for not having ideal body position on descents.
  • 2 0
@jclnv: A lot of flats? So far this season Schurter has punctured in one race (where he was also running a new wheelsize for the first time in several years) and Absalon has punctured in one race. So.....
  • 2 0
@wingguy: He flated twice in that race. La Bresse wasn't it?
  • 3 0
Not a big XC racing fan. However, I must say Scott has some very sexy XC bikes
  • 2 1
Will there be a way to watch the XCO world championship live on the internet this weekend? Didn't find any information in ther crappy UCI website.
  • 4 0
 Redbull tv
  • 2 0
@holyone: Cheers! Didn't know they were showing XCO too. I thought I wasn't extreme enough for them. But it makes sense, those athletes are beasts!
  • 3 0
@EvilGarfield: Been showing XCO since they took over from Freecaster. It's the only way to watch it in the US.

Debating between the new Spark and the Focus O1E.
Any Scott owners out there, can you comment on how durable your frames have been?
  • 2 0
I have 4 Scotts , 2006 onwards and have never had a frame problem. Only real comment would be that on the first Genius the rear bearings wear out quick. My 2011 carbon LT has run several years of comprpetitive enduro inc many runs down fort Bill DH with zero problems.
  • 2 0
Today will be over 1,800 miles on my 2012 Scott Spark 29 Team (which was bought used), 5,754 miles on my 2013 Scott Scale 970, 3,066 miles on my 2012 Scott Speedster S20...all alu and no problems.
  • 1 0
@zephxiii & @MysticMCyclist: thanks for the feedback guys! There may be a Scott in my future!
  • 1 0
....Is he running his flat bars upside down? And is that for stack height or does he just like the bend? (See pics 3, 4)
  • 1 0
I thought so too, but look at the last two pictures. Looks like the graphics and the Ritchey name are right side up, so must just be a new offering from them.
  • 1 0
@SCOTT-Sports do you guys sell the hat Nino is wearing in the interview around 2:07? Can't find it on the website.
  • 3 0
 NEW BIKE DAY \o/
  • 2 0
But will it help him not get flats?
  • 1 0
He needs the dropper for that.
  • 2 0
Nino .you are the BEST!!!!!!! Smile
  • 2 0
Such a great complete athlete. Beer
  • 2 0
 Legend!
  • 1 0
 Nino +1
  • 1 0
 34 models? Is that all.
  • 2 0
...and all with 100mm of travel. I feel like there might be some copy/paste going on.
  • 1 0
@rnayel: Not all with 100mm of travel. The top level RC models have 100mm, the non-RC Sparks have 120mm.
  • 1 0
@wingguy: The article says there are 34 RC models and that all models come with 100mm.
  • 1 0
 @mgolder: Then they've got it wrong, there are 16 RC models. 4 27.5 Sparks, 4 29 Sparks, 4 27.5 Scales and 4 29 Scales.
  • 1 0
@wingguy: Yes, we both knew that. That is why we both made jokey comments about it.
  • 1 0
@mgolder: That..... is a very good point. I'll go now :p
  • 1 1
Dropper post at Rio seems necessary.

 amber walls FTW

Is it me or does the full-sus look strangely like the '06 Giant Trance?
