Châtel Bikepark kept Nico Vink and his company, Ride Creations' signature line pretty hush hush. Those of you that have been lucky enough to experience it already know how awesome and flowy this trail is. For those of you who haven't yet checked it out, we spent two days with Nico to show you what you're missing. We also took the opportunity to ask the mastermind behind this little gem a few questions...

For those who don't know, can you tell us about your company, Ride Creations?

Kristof Lenssens and myself started the company three years ago. We grew up in the same town riding bikes, building trails and jumps. Around the age of 15, we both started racing DH Nationals and World Cups. After 15 years of racing, I got pretty bored and decided I wanted to focus more on building trails and freeride. Ben Walker was definitely an inspiration for the direction we took.

What do you actually prefer? Riding your bike or digging with the machine?

I love both. To me, building is part of riding. There's nothing better than creating a fresh trail, line or jump and then riding it.

How was it up there in the branches?

Fun, I want more!

More seriously, how does it feel when you first rode the track you worked on for five weeks?

If everything works first go, it's amazing! It's cool to see people stoked on riding something we created. Good times for everyone! Love it!!

You are always smiling and having fun. Any tips for us on how to feel that good?

I can be grumpy too. The only tip that I can give is to just do whatever it is that makes you happy.

Nico, you are the guy who built the biggest line in the world. How is it to work in a bike park on a beginner trail?

I like building both. I like the challenge of making a beginner trail which is fun for multiple skill levels and sometimes I just feel like pushing my personal limits and building big jumps.

How did you manage to build a trail where everyone from beginner to experts can have fun?

I always try to build multiple options, lines, transfers, etc. There's no double jumps, only table tops, and rollers - more like a DH pump track. I always try to leave room for progression. If you have skills, there are opportunities to go bigger and for beginners, it's just a flowy trail over rollers and berms.

What is the next evolution we can expect in trail building?

Personally I want to see more bike parks, more jumps and more opportunity for progression for future generations. Imagine Fest Lines in bike parks.

What was the biggest challenge for this track?

The weather. It rained non-stop and I had a super tight deadline to deal with. Working in the Alps was definitely a new experience. The amount of springs and rivers did not make it easier.

Worst memory from when you were building?

Probably the endless rain and trying to build a trail with liquid mud while the excavator is stuck.

And the best one?

Seeing the line come together, being able to try it and watch other people riding it.

Any other projects in the future?

There are plenty of projects in the pipeline. Soon I'll head south to prepare for Royalfest and we're planning to build a top-to-bottom jump trail in Châtel Bikepark later this year. There will be more news on their Facebook page in the near future, so be sure to keep an eye out!

I love how he's built the trail with everyone in mind. Doesn't matter if you can't send everything, but you can if you want/can. Plus it looks like awesome fun!!

That was too good !!!!! This dude is so talented... He should be in charge of every single bikepark on this planet

As long as he still has time for Loosefest.

 all comments are right,but...
... who keep the lines in shape? He is a well builder, but all his lines are demaged after a few weeks. he should train the bikeparkowners how to keep the trails clean and rideable. Per example is Hürtgenwald totally wasted...I still like it there, but for beginners it´s way to mess...

Well well. Was there last week and we had super fun riding this new trail. Knew the old line as well. But man.. That's the way berms should be built everywhere. So sick. Love it. Thanks Nico

BTW here is our try. Didn't get every gap like the Boss, but it was fun anyways. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwTFSdpViHA

Manual pumps a DH bike like he's riding a DJer on a pump track. What a beast.

Let's hope they can keep it in that condition... I was there last year and I wasn't impressed by the condition of the tracks, at all
  • 7 0
Yup, I was there last year and the braking bumps were savage. They weren't as bad as the ones in Les Gets though.
  • 6 1
@NorthernMatt: When I was there earlier this year the tracks were appalling. Seems like all the work had gone into making this and the reboul jam.... Shouldn't be making new lines if they can't maintain what they have surely?!
  • 1 0
@blitz66: Yeah, Id say Leg Gets side was worst out of the lot.. Super Morzine was like riding on freshly lain tarmac, chattel was rough, but not evil.. but yeha.. Les Gets.. spend max 1/2 a day over there all week!

The lip at 2:07 is awesome, I like the cut of it's jib, and he goes like I don't even know how many feet vertically on it.

Rode it a few weeks ago. Big improvement over the old line that was there. Smooth and fast but deceptively hard to put a fast clean run together as it's so relentless and unless you set up perfectly for every section you'll find yourself losing a lot of speed. Tons of fun though.

Was there 2 weeks ago... I wish that the stream gap was open.. hold shit that thing was HUGE!!
  • 1 0
@steviestokes: They opened it briefly when we were there until a young lad managed to catch his front wheel on the landing. Amazed he's not dead.
  • 1 0
@boardinbob: that might have been why it was shut.... If I remember.. it was a bit of a 'launch' for most of the week, and on our last time up the chairlift on the last day.. they were giving it a bit more kick... beast of a gap though.. would have loved to have hit it.. would have probably shit my pants on the run in though haha

@steviestokes: The ambulances were working overtime that day. People wiping themself out non stop
  • 6 1
@steviestokes: We (Chatel bikepark) opened it briefly to test but the lip was to flat so we changed it by making it more of a stepdown aka kicker. It is 2m longer than last year at 9m and now works well. Plus we added a safety net and crash pads just in case things go south.

Yep! Just brilliant! If i nose bonked a rock, i might go over the bars...if i whip into a tree for a tire tap, the tree will probly throw me on the ground! Pretty much, UR THE SHIT VINK!

So I'm sitting here 9 weeks into a 4-6 month recovery after a quad tendon rupture from a pretty innocent fall during a manual (pedal slip and came off the back with my leg caught up) and Mr. Vink has to rub it in my face...

I love trails that are fun for everyone from beginner to expert - del Boca Vista in whistler is like that too; intro tech for beginners but tonnes of options and neat little lines for repeat enjoyment.

This year is a wash but I'll be back next year...

I'm a fan of this Nico and all the teams effort that goes into making a line like this. To me its pure passion for the sport. Not only that, he's passing on a Stella attitude to how it should be donetup

I got to ride it a few weeks ago, nowhere near as fast as that, mind. A really well designed trail. The revamped four cross course over in Les Croset is super fun too.

He is like the Zlatan of Biking.
