Truvative Hammerschmidt Cranks....AM/DH

I m curious

I been curious over this set-up for a while, so I thought I would bring it to all the 'Seadevil Dream Teams' attention for some constructive criticism, or positive feedback.

This is an expensive set-up so let's have a gossip about the pro's and cons of this system? If you all convince me, I may run it on the Niner 29er new build.

I fould some info to go on for us all to have a browse over and I will add the links at the bottom. Some of my mates on the Dream Team do not like this system, saying it was ok a few years ago, but now, modern technology and a 1x10 gear setup is just as efficient?

Do you run a single, double, or triple? Also, if money was no object, would you try the Hammerschmidt system ???

Let the comments be constructive, and if you like, say so....If you don't let me know your thoughts on it please? I think this is a topic worth having a gossip over...In theory it looks good to me....I was chatting to an engineer friend of mine who was also curious over this system? I said I would draw up a blog and gather info off all you experienced bikers all over the world !!!

Let the gossip begin....

I think the sound/drag was a big distraction...I had one on my tomac and it got quite noisy with use. ....I definately prefer a single upfront....nice and quiet..hammershmidt was an innovative idea....but there is a weight factor plus more to go wrong if youre miles from home..

Major con, when it breaks there is naff all way off fixing it save sending it away to europe be repaired... One of my friends had one & some grit got inside & it seized, for love nor money couldnt get the bloody thing open to repair it as a specialist tool is required to open it. In the end tried to machine up a new tool, but didnt work, so i think the choice was to send it off & pay £££ to repair it, in the end he just took it off & threw it away, replaced with shimano slx Smile

Because its a sealed unit, any grit that gets inside just gets tumbled around as though in a washing machine until it seizes. its easier to maintain a traditional crankset.

IMO with a hammerschmidt you'd just be throwing good money after bad...

On a freeride bike yes, not on a 29er... If you think about going really fast to a sudden uphill, that's when you'd use it, if you're peddling along on a 29er and you clearly see a hill coming you already select the right gear. Smile

Had a hammerschmidt. They rule but the weight and drag sucks big time. Just get a one by with a 42t cog and call it.
