by Samantha Saskia Dugon

Back at Darkfest for his second visit is Isle of Wight based freeride Sam Hodgson, accompanied with his brand new Monster Energy helmet as he joins the monster Athlete roster.

Pivot Firebird
Frame: Pivot Firebird, small
Fork: Rockshox Boxxer Ultimate, 210psi, 2 clicks off slowest rebound. HSC & LSC all the way up
Shock: Fox Float X2250psi, max HSC & LSC
Wheels: DT Swiss FR560 rims on DMR Hubs, Schwalbe Rock Razor tyres set up tubeless, 40psi front and back
Drivetrain: SB One Single Speed, DMR Cranks 170mm, 34t chainring.
Brakes: Shimano Deore XT, 203mm
Cockpit: DMR handlebars, 760mm, 35mm clamp, "flat as f*ck" rise, DMR grips
Pedals: DMR Vaults
Saddle & Seatpost DMR saddle, Thompson seatpost

To handle to massive hits of Darkfest Sam had DMR hubs paired with DT Swiss' FR560 rims.

For his drivetrain Sam had an SB One Single Speed setup with DMR Cranks running a 34t chainring.

Sam opted for Schwalbe's Rock Razor tyres setup tubeless with 40psi front and rear.

These DarkFest Bike checks are cracking me up.

"Yea running like 60 psi in my tires, for the fork, I just lock it out and pump it up until my shock pump gauge spins all the way around 2 times, the rear shock is actually pumped full of hydraulic fluid instead of air, its just a bit more supportive, rear tire I actually found in a dumpster after a local dh race, I have 3 tubes in the rear tire, I think the derailleur is a few speeds idk I don't ever shift, yea that's pretty much my setup!" (rolls off and sends 90 foot jump sideways)

Gave me a good laugh, surely comment gold

I am thinking that including the level of technical detail they have in these reports is just pointless, these kind of bikes are doing something none of us will ever do with a setup that would be horrific for anything we will ever do

@ctd07: I love the details. Not that I’ll ever set my bike up that way, but it’s great to see what it takes to send stuff this big. And I’ll definitely be adding a few PSI next time I hit a jump line.

If his shock blows up we'll know why, he's running it at 2250 psi.
  • 15 0
Yeah that last 2000 PSI would be really slow going on the old shock pump. Talk about cramp

@dkendy1: good excuse for muscle imbalances :/

It's a fox so will blow up regardless.

What happened to the Firebird at Darkfest? The clips I've seen he's riding a hardtail
  • 3 0
 Depends what jumps he’s doing

that saddle is dope. I also like the frame protection graphics on the downtube - really goes well with the bike.
