PRESS RELEASE: Snow Summit

Forecasts are calling for another weekend of perfect riding weather with party cloudy skies and temps in the 80s. Last week the Trail Crew put in 30 man-hours patching and rebuilding berms, adjusting trail slope, cleaning up pavers on Turtle, and finishing Globo Gym, the new green jump line, which made its debut Saturday, July 7.

We're also counting down to Crafts N Cranks, our annual bike and brew fest, featuring a $40K prize purse, 40+ craft beers, live music, and kids activities, July 28-29 at Snow Summit. The festival is FREE to the public and beer tasting and carnival tickets are available online now.

Those berms did not look fresh.

those berms are most definitely not. they are pretty blown already.

Rode them yesterday. They are NOT fresh. That hip isn't new either.

It's socal, so they're unfreshed as soon as the sun rises.

30 man hours...so 1 dude worked on it? Whistler puts in like 300+ man hours a week!

That's what I was thinking. They've got like a 5 person crew, so they worked 1 day this week and that warrants a press release?

I know where everyone is coming from on wanting more from Snow Summit. But we will never be what whistler or coast gravity park is, and that's ok. Everyone who rides owes it to themselves to make the pilgrimage to whistler, until then, lower your expectations, be patient, and just go up and have as much fun as you possibly can at Big Bear. They are trying their best for us.

 Are they? I'm honestly asking.

I feel like the main jump line leaves a lot to be desired...i.e. Lacks flow / sizing can be a bit odd...I dno. Mammoth has odd jumps too that I feel could be improved greatly. Sure...better than nothing, but it always seemed like a missed opportunity to me. At least mammoth has other redeeming fun qualities, but bear is really just a place in socal to jump bikes, and it just doesn't do it as well as I feel it could.

That said...I'm no builder, so maybe it's just harder than I think to make what I want.

I also wonder if they are really doing all they can. All we got this year is like 3 new table tops on westridge that are weird sizes and the berms on turtle. There is so much more they can do. Like make a new trail for the first time in years.

@Austink: they're limited by the forest service on how many miles of trail they can open. at least that's my understanding of it.

@novajustin: that's the thing though...I don't even care about them adding to the park, just improve what is already there

Snow Summit is convenience. It’s not too far from the L.A. area and will get you your park fill. I used to drive their back in the late 90’s/early 2000’s to ride when it wasn’t a bike park. It’s not the best place but it is better than a lot for that region. I still remember the Big Bear Amateur Cup. Haha, the old days.

Just went to summit on friday. It is my first taste of a bike park and I am hooked. I feel like what disneyland is for my kids, summit is for me. Miracle mile is my favorite.

I think everyone in SoCal should go to snow summit. That way mammoth won’t be as crowded Wink

Mammoth is crowded like one weekend a season (Kamikaze Games). I was riding the 49 open trails a couple of weeks ago and swear no more than 10 people were riding the mountain. Our bikes were the only ones in the bike check at the hotel!

 @Rubberelli: yep, mammoth always empty...

so many people shitting on Snow Summit. It's close by and it's better than nothing. It's nice to have lift-served riding only an hour and a half away from LA County. If you don't like it don't go.

The dirt there just goes to powder... But, at least it's a place to ride, and they are doing a lot more than they did back on the day... It's not Whistler, but not many places compare to whistler...

There are plenty of reasons to complain about SS, but the loose conditions isn't one of em...it's typical socal style, loose is fun
  • 1 0
@lumpy873: did you ever ride there back in the day? the trails were way different than the swill they're pushing on us now so to make the statement that they didn't do enough back then isn't doing the trails back then any justice. steep and sharp paver berms did not exist back then. every trail was pretty much natural single track through the trees with natural rock gardens and roots. none of these blown out brake bumped "berms" or steep jumps that will send you to the moon. there's a reason why SS was the first stop on the DH national circuit back then....

@novajustin: and they only had 4 trails... Plenty of braking bumps, berms that may or may not blow up when you hit them... But, I loved the big left hip that was on log chute(I think).. The one that always stands out to me was the attitude of the people there... Any suggestions were usually met with a "We're doing you a favor by being here " type of attitude...

Yes, I would love to see more natural trails. But, SS is still fighting the on going battle with that forestry service..

@lumpy873: they also only have 4 trails now so... and yes, i keep wishing for a logchute come back. still miss that trail. i want it to come back in it's original form. none of the man made super sharp turns they're making now.
  • 1 0
@novajustin: they are adding... slowly... As I understand it, the approval for adding more trails was already in place when the last change in ownership happened.. But, then other things changed... I heard this year, they had pretty much used their water allocation by Feb...

Skyparks Socals new bike park...kidding but season pass there is cheaper and the place is fun. Racing at snow summit next weekend will be first and probably only visit this year
  • 2 0
Yeah if you want to pedal... If I'm pedaling, there are MUCH better options
  • 2 0
a season pass may be cheaper, but $39 for a day pass + $10 for parking to pedal/push your bike is kind of shitty.
  • 2 0
It's cool but paying top dollar for no lift...
  • 10 7
I wish they would build some stuff thats not gay
  • 4 1
There's a memo from HR on the lunchroom wall about......oh nvrmnd.
  • 4 2
By "gay", do you mean extremely treacherous? There's an almost steady stream of emergency vehicles taking people out of there.
  • 6 1
@Rubberelli: I just rode Northstar, and Mammoth, and basically it makes me not want to ride big bear
  • 2 1
@englertracing: I don't blame you. Luckily a pass to Big Bear is also a pass to Mammoth.
  • 2 2
@Rubberelli: yeah, treacherous to the retards that they cater the neutered park to...bizarre
  • 5 4
Yawn, place is such a joke. I'd rather fly 2.5hrs to BC, then drive 2hrs to SS and ride green and blue trails. #pass
  • 3 3
 Second that
  • 2 0
Are you supposed to do a foot-plant on the stump-knob 'feature'?
  • 3 3
That hip on westridge is so fun!!!!
  • 4 0
 fun yes, new not.
  • 4 4
 See you there!
