“Girl Power”: Women’s Mountain Bike Clinic & Comp to Add Focus on Younger Riders
Sugar Cubes and Sweet Peas categories let girls join the fun at the Sugar Showdown Seattle
Seattle, Washington—Sweetlines, the women-focused, woman-led mountain bike coaching service today announced a new skills class and jump jam for younger girls to be added to the Sugar Showdown Seattle, a women’s “ridestyle” mountain bike event to be held in Issaquah, Washington, on July 5-6, 2014.
What: Sugar Showdown Seattle
Where: Duthie Hill Park, Issaquah, WA
When: Classes – Saturday, July 5 (9am-3pm)
Sweet Peas Class – Saturday, July 5 (1-3pm)
Comp – Sunday, July 6 (9am-5pm)
Sweet Peas Pump & Jump Jam – Sunday, July 6 (noon)
Event host Kat Sweet of Sweetlines and ICP-certified women coaches will offer one day of coaching and one day of competition at Duthie Hill Park, an ideal venue for teaching “ridestyle,” a type of mountain biking they promote that combines slopestyle with freeride, dirt jumping and park riding.
Riders with at least a year of mountain biking experience invited to attend. New students will receive extensive help with form and technique at the beginning of the day, while returning and more advanced students will have a refresher session before moving on to learn freeride skills.
Classes available for younger riders include Sugar Cubes (ages 10-14), who have at least one year of biking experience and are ready to jump their bikes, and Sweet Peas (ages 6-9 years), a new class added this year that will teach girls how to session the pump track and possibly beginner jump lines, working on skills while having fun.
“The Sugar Showdown is all about building the Sisterhood of Shred. We are trying to create an event that supports women and girls of many ages and abilities,” said Sweet. “The girls of today are going to be the shredders of tomorrow, and at the Sugar Showdown they can learn skills, build confidence and have fun in a supportive environment. At the same time, they can watch other women—mothers, daughters, sisters, friends—accomplish amazing things on a bike.”
On Sunday, the students automatically be entered in the competition (though participation is optional). Judging will be based on form and style for amateurs, with tricks added to the criteria for pro and semi-pro categories.
There will also be a free Sweet Peas Pump & Jump Jam for ages 6-9 held on Sunday at lunchtime for any girls who want to join us.
Event coaches include Stephanie Nychka, Lisa Tharp, Lisa Mason, Angi Weston, Cortney Knudson, Meg Valliant, Lauren Heitzman, and host Kat Sweet.
