What makes the ideal mountain biking location?Topography? You gotta have mountains, right?!
Dirt? Sandy loam that packs, drains well, is light enough to throw some roost, but dense enough that it rolls fast.
Community? A dedicated cadre of trail building pros and couple of cool local shops? Maybe some other activities to keep the whole family entertained.
Anyone of these makes a great spot, but what do you get when all three come together?
Trails that defy genres and challenge riders of all levels.Rumors of such a place on the Oregon Coast, just west of Portland, have been circulating for months. A place where some of the world’s best freeriders have seen the possibilities that lie in hero-dirt-hills rolling to the ocean. You’ve probably seen the edits, Instagram clips, ads - each with vague references to the ‘Oregon Coast’ location.
Well, it’s time to put this mecca of MTB on the map.
The
Tillamook Off-Road Trail Alliance is proud to announce that we are working in partnership with the Siuslaw NF, Hebo Ranger District in the planning of a possible mountain bike park located just outside of Pacific City.
The trail system is exploring the possibilities for a mix of shuttle-access freeride, downhill, and all-mountain trails to the Tillamook area, with trail options suitable for riders of all ages and abilities.
“The Oregon Coast has some of the best trail building dirt and topography in the world” says local trail-building legend Josh Venti.
“The sandy loam we have here in Tillamook county is ideal to build with, it’s what allows us to make trails that are progressive, that push what riders are capable of, but still be forgiving enough to handle the mistakes that often go along with pushing personal boundaries. It offers riders a perfect balance of grip and speed, drains well, and never gets too dry thanks to the cool breeze off the ocean.”Building trails to world-class standards is a costly endeavor, however. To bankroll the project, TORTA is hosting a fundraiser with support from Norco Bicycles, Lolo Racks, Dakine and Bubs Naturals.
By simply purchasing a TORTA sticker, you’ll be automatically entered to win one of 4 amazing prizes.First prize is a 2021 Norco Sight A2- in the frame size, wheel size, and color of your choosing, valued at $3800 USD
Second Prize is a Lolo rack valued at over $740USD
Third Prize is a hydration pack, knee pads, waist bag and more from Dakine
Fourth Prize is a collection supplements including collagen protein powder from our friends at Bubs Naturals

A note on Volunteering: The spirit and strength of the Oregon cycling community is always astounding. We’re very fortunate to be working on this project in such a hotbed of trailbuilding energy, and we expect a good number of folks reading this article are willing to pitch in their time and talents to shape these trails. If you are interested in volunteering, please send us a message. Finally, we want to share our gratitude for being able to craft these trails from traditional Nestucca, Tillamook and Siletz tribal lands.
Question: how does the dirt hold up? Is it a mostly summer ride if you aren't looking to ride the slick? Klootchy creek is pretty fun but getting halfway decent dirt is tricky due to the moisture.
On another note, that lampoon station wagon is bad a&&....
