Kids Need Carbon - Sunday Comics with Taj Mihelich

Dec 4, 2020 at 14:47
by Taj Mihelich
After Specialized launched their $999 carbon Hot Walk, I had the idea to design some ultra-high-end carbon fiber products for kids. With a little research I found that even my dorkiest thoughts actually existed.

I thought carbon fiber Legos would be a good joke because does a plastic brick really need to be lighter? But, there's actually a Kickstarter currently raising money for exactly that! And carbon fiber clothes? There's a fedora and a baseball hat. And, I've seen the toilet.

I didn't let all these setbacks stop me though. I still managed to come up with a few new products that every kid needs. There's even a couple for the whole family. Sure they're more expensive than what you might be used to, but it's carbon fiber!

For your entertainment here are some products I'll probably patent some day.

Here are some designs the whole family can enjoy.

The Kettle Bell made me laugh really hard, the Diaper is the most competitive ive ever seen:-D
  • 44 1
Kettle bell was very relatable haha
  • 42 9
Regarding the kettle bell — what’s heavier, 10 pounds of bricks, 10 pounds of feathers, or 10 pounds of carbon fiber?

 @TheR: whoosh...
  • 29 3
@gasman1: No whoosh. It’s exactly what made it funny to me. 75 percent lighter than the competition!
  • 44 0
@TheR: 10 pounds of carbon is obviously lighter
  • 4 0
guess what, we even have a carbon based stroller, might seem silly, but it has a disc brake as well which is going well for me..
  • 14 0
@gasman1: I believe that whoosh you heard may have actually been right over your head...
  • 2 0
@TheR: everyone knows that carbon is lighter Smile
And better

 @bigtim: or a fart
  • 2 0
 @Bikerdude137: And definitely faster...

But steel is heavier than feathers

Are this CC or just common C versions?

 Turd! Sorry I mean turq!

I worked at a Ducati dealer years ago. We had carbon fiber dog bowls...they were always sold out
  • 4 0
I can’t even imagine how expensive those would be.
  • 9 0
 @reo-driver: the name is epic
  • 7 0
@vhdh666: Product description via google translate: "You really can't complain about a lack of linguistic humor with Uli Fahl and his men. And the "Ruhrpott" is certainly one of the name highlights in the Black Forest catalog. The two-part place setting consists of a 420 ml cup and a saucer 16 cm in diameter; both together weigh about as much as a carbon rim, which is certainly not so relevant during the coffee break."

Ummm...yeah.
  • 3 1
 I would actually buy that.
  • 2 0
@noapathy: i was referrig to the name only
  • 1 0
 @vhdh666: Both quite amusing, no?
  • 9 0
@noapathy: That joke doesn't translate. Ruhrpott is a former industrial area in Germany where a lot of coal mining took place until the 80ies. So having a carbon product from the Schwarzwald called Ruhrpott is pretty funny Wink
  • 7 0
@silvanoe: Ruhrpott is itself a humorous term, as "Pott" is implies "potty" in children's slang (deliberately chosen over "Topf" which is neutral word for "pot" in modern German). It's a pejorative (like "Inland Empire" for central valley California) used by non-residents to imply it's a place where industrial pollution gets flushed, and you don't really want to live. Caling a literal bowl/pot for stirring, etc. a "Ruhrpott" is a double-entendre: "rühren" is German for "stir" (cf. nouns like "Aufruhr").
TLDR: double-funny, with potty humor.

My dog would 500% chew up a carbon fibre bowl in like 10 seconds. Expensive and chewable ticks most of the boxes
  • 1 0
@JumpDyna: You can make it by yourself for less than 15 bucks. You don't need prepeg hi mod carbon. Carbon or carbon/ kevlar sheets for decorative purposes are cheap. A little bit of resin, hairdryer and brush. Easy
  • 2 0
They don't call it Italian chrome for nothing.
  • 3 0
@Veloscente: Ahahaha wonderful, didn't look at it like that yet. And there is even another meta level to it. The Ruhrpott once was a very prosperous region, that with the end of coal mining and heavy industries became one of the poorer regions in western Germany. Now selling a 189 EUR carbon Pott ((pot), potty) called Ruhrpott is bitterly sarcastic Wink
  • 4 0
@Veloscente: WTF I grew up in the inland empire, is that pejorative? Have I been fooled all of these years?
  • 3 0
Thanks guys. Had no idea about any of that. Love it!

Get ready to be sued, I heard Specialized is coming out with a carbon version of their Roll cruiser bike, and therefore your carbon fiber toilet paper is infringing on their trademark.
  • 14 9
Well, that is their corporate motto:

Sue Piously Every Competitor... Innovation After Litigation... Ignoring Zombies, Everyone Dies!

Specialized. Innovate... errr DIE!!!!

My wife has a Roll. Loves it! The Nimbus tires like to pick up little thorns, so I get to change tubes on an ongoing basis. Thinking about making it tubeless.
  • 2 0
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they did come out with a carbon Roll. I would imagine a large portion of Roll sales come from retired people who tend to have a lot of money and not a lot to do. Also hipsters who never seem to work but always seem to have the latest smartphone
  • 19 1
Thank you for that! Specialized really deserves that we take the piss
  • 13 0
Knowing what carbon fiber splinters can do, the toilet paper design made me clech for a brief moment.

When Taj Mihelich found his baby products and housewares didn’t hold up to the his family’s highly progressive riding style, he went on to found TerribleTwos, a line of truly awful items. The rest was history.
  • 3 0
Lol - especially funny as a dad relatively past baby stage and realizing 3/4 of the crap we bought did not need to be new or as expensive. Although carbon my have increased the Kijiji value.... hmmm. Maybe that uppababy stroller should have been carbon. #dadlifers you know what I’m takn about.

Great funnies today. Thks
  • 1 0
MIL bought us a Uppababy stroller. Those things are so stupid expensive and was happy to sell it on Craigslist to get the money from it. Your right a carbon one would sell as buyers would want the ultimate one. The worst part is we barely used it as my wife preferred the bob revolution to run and trail hike with. Maybe a carbon e-stroller?
  • 2 0
Yes! Some of our friends spend ridiculous money on things that will be used for a couple of months, maybe. Thankfully we have other friends that save everything and the boxes of stuff just get passed around to whomever needs it next.
  • 3 0
Spudreau, got 3 kids,1st kid my mrs bought every known gadget/gizmo known to man ,2nd kid not so much,3rd kid was just "aaah that'll be reet Smile

If you definitely don't want leaks, make sure you use the diaper with enough sealant and an insert. Inflate until you hear "pop".
  • 4 0
Hopefully the supply chains can hold up to the increased demand for carbon toilet paper
  • 1 0
wait you said it first. Chains, we need carbon chains.

Should do a comic about vertical compliance. Soon, every single part of your bike will have four knobs to adjust the damper and two valves for the positive and negative air springs....
  • 1 0
That sippy cup with some Kevlar reinforcement would had saved me a.lotnof money back at my kid's first years. That little guy had a natural talent to smash those things to pieces after a mere couple sips...

Perfect Sunday morning comics, relevant and humorous.

Blankey is the must. Great ideas!
  • 2 0
Blankey made me chuckle. Well played
  • 2 0
Somewhere at Specialized those ideas do already exist in a “future possibility” file.
  • 1 0
Besides the sippy cup, that toilet paper roll of carbon strand is likely the most likely useable out of all them. Pre-epoxy though.
  • 3 0
Must have the S-Works version of the diaper. Hard pass for me.
  • 2 0
CF EVO car seat with air sprung 50mm shocks for day trippin to the mall, or the coil version for high speeders.

I love these. Taj never fails to deliver.

The specialized marketing guy who thought of the carbon fiber kids bike is definitely very happy right now.
  • 3 1
Can I get a Turq version of the kettle bell to lose even more weight?
  • 1 2
Fact 11, Turq, CC. It’s all the same sucker shit...

 Capitalism.
  • 1 1
With all due respect to Taj, I'm not sure any of the joke product ideas are any worse than an actual carbon run bike! Tough to parody an idea this absurd.
  • 1 0
Of all the proposed products, the CF toilet paper & diaper are hands down the two shittiest ideas of the bunch! Smile
