Video: The First Rider to Drop at the First Ever Rampage - Krispy Baughman in 'Then & Now'

Video: Branson Kendall

The year is 2001, and Virgin Utah is preparing for the first annual Red Bull Rampage. Back then, riders would just show up, ask for a number plate, and then receive one in the order they registered. Meet Kris Baughman. The first rider to drop into the first Red Bull Rampage. Riders everywhere know him as Krispy, and from his younger days of competing, to now managing a bike shop and leading a junior team, he knows the impact that bikes can have on individuals and a community. We checked in with him over at Go-Ride in Draper Utah and got to learn about what he has been up to. Cheers to people like Krispy who have made biking better for everyone around them!

Thanks everyone! It was quite the walk down memory lane digging up all the old footage and mags from the archives.

Awesome to see your face when I opened PB today. Such great memories. I recall seeing you in Down and wanting to ride with you so bad. You introduced me to Thor and Bender, invited me to Virgin and scared the daylights out of me. You where the reason I was fortunate enough to ride in the first four years of Rampage. I loved seeing the footage of your winning run at the Moab Rim freeride comp, what I believe was the first freeride comp. I wish I had a photo of us standing on the podium together, the good old days.

I had the good fortune of stumbling into a screening of Down (or maybe Double Down?) in Moab way back on a bike road trip and met you and Thor. Might have been a community hall or church or something? After the show you were doing these high speed wheelies out on the street. Pretty jaw-dropping to an XC guy that I was at the time. Little did I know that my XC leanings would become tilted to the gravity side over time. Rad memories and thanks for being a piece of the culture puzzle!

I have some great memories of the Impromptu Moab Birthday Trip and sharing stories about Utah XC from back in the mid-nineties. That was a great weekend and fun Mario Coin Collecting on Klondike during Magpie's Free Shuttle Sunday!

So cool to see this!!! I remember meeting you for the first time at Guthrie's downtown, in the last century, and was so stoked to see you at Go-Ride. Been a long time with a lot of change, and I couldn't be happier for you, man. Awesome program y'all are running with the mentorship, and the shop is rad too. Killer!!

Geez that brings back a lot of memories. Karpiel frames, Qranc clothing etc.

Unsure why but Krispy makes that Trust/Lauf fork look rad.

You would have to be "Krispy" in order to be the first to drop in at Rampage.

One of the best things of this site is the archive of old articles. I frequently spend time reading the old content. Great vid.

I love to go back in time and see what the latest trends and news were 10 years ago, needless to say some of the bike design and wheel size debates haven't aged well.

@Molesdigmyjumps: LOL. i was wondering how long it would take for that reference to Pop Up even though my original focus involved the famous doughnuts .

I love the old school LBZ and Fleshgear gear he was wearing, taking it back to the Crusty Demons Videos.Totally Rad!
  • 2 0
Thought the same thing, has a rad old school Crusty vibe....sending big jumps, just landing them was the goal....nevermind today where they hit the same stuff with front flips, 360's, and whatever else....as impressive as it is, kinda takes something away from the OG stuff.

Krispy, Karpiel and Avalanche suspension all etched in freeride lore! Thank you for what you did Kris, you showed us the next level a true pioneer!! And thanks for letting me ride your rig at Mt. Snow! Good to see you doing well man!

The Down and Double Down movies showed me that mountain biking was a real sport! And the reason I have a lot less money. Great edit Tannus!

Bought a copy of Down in 2002. Then spent my weekends practicing stair gaps of the University of Utah. Campus police didn't like it. Long live Krispy.

Ha! I still have some of the Moto Raptor DHs on an old bike that Scott sold me when I lived in SLC. I bought them right out of his garage. Those were the days.

Crazy to think about a lot of the stuff in videos today, was done first 20 years ago on bikes that would be considered unridable by modern standards.
  • 2 0
This was absolutely awesome....great to hear your story Krispy! Just one thing, please frame that Red Bull Rampage plate....what an awesome piece of history you have there!

 What a guy!
  • 2 1
 He even beat the Canadians..
  • 1 2
He did his run before any Canadians did, but Wade Simmons won that Rampage, and Krispy didn't beat any of the 6 Canadians in the top 10. Who did Krispy beat again??
  • 2 1
@mammal: its the quote from krispy in a freeride competition in Kranked. Kiddo.
  • 1 2
@owlie: Well that's fantastic, o'great and wise oracle. So who did he beat?
  • 1 0
@mammal: Probably the Canadians.. It was a Krispy segment. But who was riding freeride in 2000?
  • 1 2
@owlie: Who wasn't free riding in 2000, old timer (I'm a whole 5 years younger than you after all)?
  • 2 0
 Ya Kris!!!!
  • 2 0
