Our boy Carl Hulick is back at it with some buddies taking klunking to yet another level. Classic SoCal technical downhilling, flowy dirt jumps and power slides create one of the best klunker edits we have seen. These guys don't back down from anything just because they are on Klunkers

If you want to be part of the Klunker movement, you need one of these.

unable to speak, especially as the temporary result of shock or strong emotion or seeing huge guys on klunk bikes. Big Grin

I love Transition's description: "We are proud to offer the Klunker, which represents a giant leap backwards in mountain bike technology."
  • + 32
Man, Transition is killing it in every possible way.
  • + 13
Oh crap. And now I want another bike.
  • + 7
They're on a roll! PNW FTW!!!
  • + 18
Probably a stupid question but how the hell do you stop on one of those things?
  • + 31
Pedal back brakes like the old days of repack.
  • + 31
 ^theyre called coaster brakes lol
  • + 5
Called repack cause you have to repack the rear hub every run... You can't descend a thousand feet on coaster brakes before it's toast...

At first i thought they were cheating with a brake lever on the bars, but upon closer inspection it was a bell.
  • + 9
I was curious how the coasters are on the trails given their definate lack of modulation and the diffiuclty to maintain even pressure over rough surfaces. From the looks of the video, the trails needed a safe word as they got 50 shades of torn.
  • + 3
The only options they had was coast or lock up the rear tire.
  • + 3
That coaster brake needed a safe word too. The grease was probably vaporized after trying to slow down that behemoth.
  • + 1
That would work only on dry terrain i think
  • + 2
@mattsavage save to say they can be called toaster brakes!
  • + 15
This is what BMX racing was originally like. The organized racing of 20" and 26" bikes downhill over jumps and berms was already blowing up in So Cal years before those stoners in Fairfax were having "klunking" races down one boring fire road.

How We Roll clip featuring one of the first DH tracks. youtu.be/B1GdIdgkUIc
  • + 6
That was cool. Like being in the Way Back Machine.
  • + 5
looks like so much fun, almost makes more sense than modern bmx tracks
  • + 2
Great vid. Love the numbers written on paper plates.
  • + 5
Banana seats, ape hanger bars yeah buddy. We were doing this up here in Far-Nor-Cal about this same time. We went as far as welding moto bars to the old goose necks and ten speed seats slammed to the frame, number plates wired to the bar, fat tires front and rear, racing around local moto tracks and old mining roads, fire trails anywhere we could find to ride. Thanx for the memory refresh. Now off to see if I can find some old pix I have from about 1969-70.
  • + 2
 Very nice video thanks
  • + 2
 Love the water jump!
  • + 1
 Man, those kids could ride!
  • + 14
Proof that the style is always in the pilot and not the jet.
  • + 7
Being over 40, I am old enough to remember riding coaster brakes. They are a freaking pain in the ass and take some skill to ride well, especially after you get used to a freewheel. Mad skills by those guys, but make mine a single speed rigid with disc brakes.
  • + 10
That is a sure fire way to kill myself
  • + 7
After watching this video...I feel a certain impulse to buy a Transition Klunker, move to So. Cal. Start taking steroids, get ripped at a Gold's Gym, and go klunking!
  • + 1
yup and get yourself a 1980's Sony Walkman Sport with a yellow headphone cable. you will be fighting the girls off.
  • + 6
I ride these trails... and I can barely make it down some of these sections with disc brakes and full suspension. MAD PROPS!!!
  • + 1
Where can I find this trail?? Just moved to So Cal
  • + 4
A Klunker is probably one of the best ways to scare yourself...and have tons of fun...and build some serious bike handling skills...and...just go get one already! Seriously.
  • - 1
try fixed offroad riding, now thats nuts..
  • + 1
Hmm... I'm planning on building up a fixed CX this winter. I have done some singletrack on a (brakeless) fixie before and I'm sure it'll happen some more! This time I hope to have a disk brake on the front though.
  • + 2
Awesome, makes me want to build one up again. My first mtb was a single speed klunker with a coaster brake. That coaster brake made going down long, steep, loose hills quite an adventure. My buddy's truck had "Team One Speed" on the back window -- at a time when everything was moving to 14-speed drivetrains. Now I need to find some bell bottoms.
  • + 6
 Bro do you even lift!
  • + 10
 Yes, he definitely lifts.
  • + 2
These guys shred on those coaster brakes better than the lions share of the riding population does on more able brake'd bikes!! Goes to show it's the Indian and not the arrow....and don't get all PC on me!
  • + 1
No suspension, no gears, and pretty much no brakes. Do we really need that bike's industry technology bollocks to perform is such a way? Probably one of my favourites videos here: good edit, nice music. And the stuff they do on those 'gas pipes' is just outstanding..
  • + 1
No need to go out and buy one if you already have a BMX. It's just as scary and fun to ride mountain bike trails on those too. Try it every once in a while with no brakes. Obviously you can't hit anything too steep without a safe runout but you learn to commit to your lines!
  • + 1
Ker-Plunking McKlunking... take it back to bad brakes, and 4130 rigid. Helps remind us that biking is just for fun, thats what started all this BS anyway, Looks good... Ahhh the memories!!!
  • + 4
I don't know why I want one but golly do I want one.
  • + 2
damm all over socal Kennter whoops , PV , my backyard Kenneth Hahn aka Ghetto track , Telonix man this guy was rippin all over SoCal Klunkin It !!...
  • + 1
Just awesome! And I have no problem saying I don't see myself riding trails like that with klunkers and expecting to survive long. Hugh props to this!
  • + 2
Honestly this edit is better than the hardtail edits that have been coming out recently.
  • + 2
You lost me at Socal. surprised you got that much footage when sitting in traffic most of the day
  • + 1
I'd buy one these right now if there was an option for a rear disc brake. Anyone know of a conversion kit, other than welding on some caliper mounting tabs?
  • + 3
 gary fisher would be proud
  • + 2
we should all feel ashamed for claiming to "need" a full suspension with 2 brakes and multiple gears.
  • + 2
This makes me want to go ride my dj bike on some trails haha the closest thing I have to a clunker.
  • + 2
You guys are straight Killing it on those Klunks! Sweet video and hope you ride with you crazy Cali kids some day!
  • + 3
 You're welcome whenever Tony!
  • + 3
... And I've always thought that I needed more travel
  • + 2
makes me flinch to watch, so frail in a way, like skiing downhill on cross-country skis; amazing skill
  • + 3
Those guys get more done by 9am on Klunkers than I get done all day.
  • + 3
No gears, no shocks, and no carbon. I am 36 so I remember these days.
  • + 4
Me too. While watching this, I keep thinking about all of the conversations I read on pb where people obsess about all of the little things about bikes. This vid shows that people can shred and have fun on anything with two wheels and pedals.
  • + 5
Yup, turned 48 today, and I love my carbon Fuel, but I also have a steel Sawyer that I might even love more . . . this makes me want to convert it to single speed and put a coaster brake on it!
  • + 2
 Happy birthday, ten beers!
  • + 3
B*stards, with your sunshine & dust!
  • + 2
Sick!! Some classic hard core Laguna action! those trails are GNARR! on those bikes oO
  • + 4
 whats the music?
  • + 1
 thanks buddy
  • + 1
SPOT ON!!!!! I'd have WWAAYY more body armor on doing that with COASTER BRAKES!?!?!?! impressive
  • + 2
HIS SHOULDER MUSCLES ARE BIGGER THAN MY HEAD!!!!!
  • + 1
Some of those frame welds are going to crack under those forces, be careful out there and inspect before each ride.
  • + 2
I wonder if the BIG FELLA gets any flex out of those cranks!
  • + 2
This video tells you.... Hey, harden the fuck up!!
  • + 2
 Clearly hipster friday on PinkBike...
  • + 1
Unfortunately, my trails looking nothing like this. Lots more trees and roots, lots of roots.
  • + 2
That would make the best rim commercial ever.
  • + 2
That 300 pound dude got no knee protection, true skills and confidence.
  • + 1
Getting one, just for the fun factor. They are cheap as hell too ($580), compared with any new bike you would buy.
  • + 2
kudos to whoever built those wheels! nice vid.
  • + 3

They ain t got brakes ! So sick, this is the proof you don t NEED to have suspension to say you're mountainbiking!
  • + 2
 They have coaster brakes.
  • + 1
Yes I saw that in the comments after... Even with that it has to be rough !
  • + 1
Worrying when they ride faster on bangers than you can on a full blown dh bike. Ps I wish i could KLUNK!!

  • + 3
 Not just rad, hella rad!
  • + 3
"hella rad" is NorCal, "way rad" is SoCal. Get your colloquialisms straight!
  • + 1
Oh, I see. I lived in NorCal and the only time I ever rode in SoCal was with a fellow Aussie.
