Video: Parallels Between Mountain Biking & Surfing in 'True to the Woods'

 Same here 10 minutes to ride or 2.5hrs to surf for unknown condition and packed peak make it easier for me to ride but man the whole paddling sitting waiting riding a waves is an awesome feeling that is hard to beat.

 @ybsurf: I don't know.. I agree nothing beats a perfect surf session, where you scored great waves and it was just you an your friends... But that happens once or twice a year. Localism, agro riders who think every wave is theirs, douche bags that work in surf shops that vibe you hard when you ask an honest question about a new board technology... That's all I remember because that what surfing has become. I'm stoked to have found mtbs. The community is way healthier and every ride is a good ride. Countless 3 hour surf sessions just sitting there and then you finally get one out the back and you spend the whole ride dodging and weaving kooks that didn't see the set coming.

 @dwmetalfab: exactly my thoughts our summer spot here is way over crowded for shitty waves 75% of the time and in winter nice point break but yeah 50 people waiting a set every 10 mi ites on a take off zone the size of a pick up truck. I keep surfing for travelling in remote area but when I'm home I ride I have awesome riding right in my backyard and more within an hour. Like you said nothing beats a good prefect session but it doesnt happen often, and biking is not as condition dependent, how many times I drove 3 hrs to wind blown choppy soft waves.

 @dwmetalfab: and you from Oregon man seaside and manzanitta is so crazy with localism they think its indo or Hawaii and defend it like it's the best waves in the world... lol bunch of white trash douche bags. But rest of oregon was awesome with cool chill people.

Mountain biking, however, still has that vibe.

Too many D-Bags in my surfing world made me hang up my boards and grab for my bike every time...

 @ybsurf: I've been lucky in that where i surf is still relatively chill despite being know across the UK as a great place to surf. Sure it can get busy, but there's always room for everyone and it's mainly just people who want to get in the water, have a surf and a good time and go home. I was never part of a 'surf scene', just me and my friends would surf together and that's it so that's maybe why i've not had the same experiences as other people who have commented. Although the UK surf scene is very different to North America i imagine.

I have come across the odd D-Bag surfing though. And to be honest, when you find out there are D-Bags, even in a sport as pure, joyful and (dare i say it) perhaps sometimes spritual as surfing, it's disappointing but also one of the most important life lessons you can learn:

Regardless of how fundamentally good the ethos of a particular group or community is, there's still A-holes who want to join in too. Just because somebody shares the same interest as you is no guarantee they'll uphold the same values. A-holes get everywhere and that's life.

 It's always triple overhead if you let go of your brakes... rarely ever blown out, no back paddlers. Surfing is for kooks!

 @Eatsdirt: nothing beats a good surf sessions but they are rare as biking no need to worry about tides, winds, currents and swell on your bike you just see if its dry or wet that's it and even if the trails are crowded it's never like tons of people waiting for the same wave. But like I said when the condition aligns there is nothing that beats a good surf session.

 @ybsurf: that's why mountainbiking is such a good complement to surfing, you can choose which sport you want to do depending on the conditions... but yes doing a sport that does not depend on weather/tides/wind/swell/sand banks (+ daylight hours during winter) makes you realise how satisfying it is to just get out there and go for a ride

 @ybsurf: There is absolutely nothing that compares to getting barfed out of a big deep barrel... but I get perfect uncrowded set waves every day on the bike even in blown out kitty litter. Sounds like you're trying to sell me on it... you a fan of crowded lineups?

 @ybsurf: You seem to be selling surfing, while most seasoned surfers are of the “ if you don’t surf - don’t start” mentality. Setwaves was an analogy for unfettered fun free of crowds and kooks. Get pitted brah.

 @Eatsdirt: maybe I didnt say it well but like I said as much as I like a good session of surf I dont bother much anymore because I'm 3 hrs away from the surf and it's always a gamble for conditions and super crowded nowadays. When I can drive 10 minutes and have great bike trails and a bike park 30 minutes away, so not sure where I'm trying to sell surfing like another said when you have perfect condition with only your friends it's hard to beat but it's a few times a year while biking it's always good no matter what.

 Although I doubt a surfer would have the nuts to turn up at a break with an electric surfboard claiming it helps them "surf longer"... although having just checked I see there is such a thing as an e-surfboard - jeezus we really are f*cked.

 @Status1: Surfers have plenty of nuts apparently. Dongboards at shortboard spots, SUPers everywhere. An E-board would be just another nail in the coffin.

 @Status1: oh man I know a lot a lazy "so called" surfers that would get a e-surf right away because they are too lazy and out of shape to paddle like the sport intend to do. If they make it it will sell and like @eatsdirt said it will not be a nail in the coffin but the LAST nail as every single kook will get to surf.

 Been surfing for over 25 years..(riding almost as long)...I'm wearing a pair of Volcom shorts at the moment, but only because I can get them for $15 and they fit me well...otherwise don't give any turds about the brand or what they make, but see multiple people here "excited" to see this brand getting into biking. And like you I can't help but wonder why anyone would care...just a brand for a person to pay to be a billboard for that's making the same stuff as the other guy

 Wait until they realize they can sell sell their $50 boardshorts to MTBers for $150.

 Then, imo, you're doing it wrong. Maybe that's why the whole urban bike scene doesn't appeal to me. Riding in nature is just incredibly satisfying for me. And the feeling of the insanely powerful ocean surge just before the wave launches you is one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced. Again, my opinion, but I see so much beauty on this earth.
