Press Release: WORCA

The first-ever Back Forty is happening on September 11th, 2021, in Whistler.

Racers will take on a monster course in a new 3-stage format where riders can roll through the start of each stage as they please. Ride solo or in a group, it's all about the fun of getting through this beast!

Race Details
The race uses chip timing, so every racer will receive time for each stage and for the total combined time.
Transitions between stages will not be timed.
The first stage opens at 9:00am and the final stage closes at 6:00pm.
Generous cutoff times at each stage keep riders moving and let volunteers tear down the course as they go.
Après is presented by Gibbons Whistler and catered by Domino's pizza.
Après takes place at RideWrap in Function.

What Kind Of Bike is Best?
This course throws a lot at you, from punishingly steep climbs to rowdy descents and a few sections that are deeply JANK. I'm sure the winner of the race will be some kind of mutant on an XC rig, but the course really works best for a heavy duty trail bike. Something in the 140-160 travel area with sturdy tires.

For example, the guy who came up with the course rides Stumpjumper Evo 29 with a 38 up front, Saint brakes, dh casing tires and heavy duty wheels. It weighs around 36-37 lbs (size is XXL).

Here is a picture of the bike from a recent course inspection.

Also, the main climbs might be rated blue on Trailforks, but they should be rated double black diamond, or pro line, since only someone pro level will be able to clean them and not walk

haha, na, lots of non pros can clean those climbs..but yeah, gradient wise they're pretty stiff even if they aren't technically that challenging.

From what I've ridden I'd say trail rating is definitely blue, but definitely the exertion rating is black/double black.

I prerode the course yesterday. Surprising how much each stage looks so different on the map, but each takes about the same time to complete.
Save your energy for the No Flow Zone.
The Back Forty has to be one of the best MOUNTAIN BIKE race courses ever. No subcategories like XC/Trail/DH implied, it's just plain mountain biking.

Where is the recommended parking area for the start?
Also, out and back for Miller Creek at the start? or ride out the Hwy to the far west end?

Glad you're stoked on the course!

Recommended parking is Creekside parkade (an easy roll down the hill from there to Function) and there will be shuttles for riders from Cougar Mountain.

Access to the start will be along the highway.

See you there!

That flank climb to start it off is tough! This event is not for me but the fit crushers will love it and the format is super cool.

At least it's at the start when you're fresh. That top section up to Howler on Stage 3, that's the savage part.

Ever climbed 27 switchbacks, shorter than south flank but hurts a lot more! Also theres a new climb route to bypass the switchbacks out of function, not open yet but there were machines at the top 2 nights ago. Might be open for the race

@jazzawil: 27 climb was in a previous Tony Horn event, ditto south flank, and climb challenge up to Howler too! all vicious at race pace.

Only a shame the race ends as far from the apres as is possible in Whistler! Should be a great event - I am going to try and get out on course for some photos

Sounds like WORCA has a shuttle organized for racers back to the apres so all good!

@samosaking: Can confirm there will be shuttle service to bring riders back.

Can't wait for this race. Been looking at the course on trailforks everyday since it came out... First day I get to Whistler is a big pre-ride day.
