Race Recap: Phat Wednesday #4 – June 26th 2019

Upper Angry Pirate – Lower Angry Pirate – World Cup Single Track – Afternoon Delight – Lower Whistler DH

After a one-week hiatus for the season opening BC Cup DH, Phat Wednesday presented by Kokanee returned to a moody and brooding evening in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park on June 26. Despite the gloomy weather, the mood amongst the racers was anything but.

As rain and lightning loomed large, conditions were deceptively dusty through the looser sections of Upper and Lower Angry Pirate.

Further down the course, the field of 177 navigated World Cup Single Track before traversing across to Afternoon Delight and the tight trees through the bottom section of Lower Whistler DH.

Mason Gautrey cracked the overall top 10 yet again to win the Junior Male category whilst Heidi Schenk took home top spot in the Junior Female.

In what is a scarily talented group of Grom racers, the 13 and under boys category was won by Ryan Griffith ahead of Floyd Guy and Dane Jewett.

Michelle Chang and Mathieu Hebert continued their dominant seasons with wins in the Master Female and Veteran Male categories while less than a second split a top three of Steve Storey, Adam Dagg and Ricky Hobart in the Master Men.

The standout performance of the night came from the young man from Bright AUS; Aaron Gungl laying down the time of the day with a 3:29.438 only 0.39 ahead of Bike Park team rider Trev Burke, whose 2nd place finish took him to the top of the overall points standings in the Open Men.

Rounding out the evening's results, Sophie Tyas emphatically took out the Open Female in her first Phat Wednesday of 2019.

Competition heats up as World Cup Wednesday returns next week July 2nd.
