Words: Whistler Blackcomb / Vail Resorts

Have yourself a merry little Whismas – Whistler Bike Park opens Friday, May 19! We’re locked and loaded and can’t wait to welcome back riders. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of opening day.

Which zones will be open?

Starting on day one, the Fitzsimmons Zone of the Bike Park will be open. Importantly, Fitzsimmons Express will remain closed for the entire season due to ongoing construction for our lift upgrade project. Given this, all rider uploading out of Skier’s Plaza / Whistler Village will happen at Whistler Village Gondola (WVG). As well, this is the only upload option until June 10 when more zones come online.

As WVG will be the only lift servicing Fitzsimmons Zone, please anticipate longer than average lineups and plan accordingly. The gondola will be able to accommodate up to four bikes per cabin. Congestion in the Village will ease as Bike Park zones open up. More on that below.

Never uploaded a bike park via gondola? Check out our how to load video below. There will also be a stationary practice cabin onsite for bikers to practice loading/unloading their bikes.

Garbanzo Zone is scheduled to open on June 10. Top of the World will open later this summer (date TBD). We’ll be providing updates on our social media channels as snow melts and more terrain becomes accessible.

Also on June 10, and after a year-long hiatus, the Creekside Zone of Whistler Bike Park will reopen to the public with 11km of new and expanded trails. Join us for the grand opening at Creekside Base where our partner brands will be activating with giveaways, contests, lounges and more!

Thanks to our Partners

The biggest Bike Park in the world couldn’t run without the biggest and best team. Each year, 100+ of our selected Bike Park Staff have an opportunity to receive a custom-built GT bike. These staff ride the Bike Park for their jobs regularly and they need the right tool for the job.

We work closely with our partners to spec a custom-built bike with all the dream parts a mountain biker could want. For 2023, this means:

Custom-built Crankbrothers wheels, with Maxxis tires and Cushcore inserts.
ODI grips and SDG saddles for critical contact points.
Crankbrothers pedals and Ride Concepts shoes to keep our Staff’s feet locked in.
SRAM drivetrains and brakes for the start and go.
Rockshox Ultimate tier suspension to smooth out those brake bumps and cushion those drops.
Everything is bolted to a one-of-a-kind limited edition GT Force or Fury.

We’re incredibly thankful to work with our partners to produce these amazing work horses – keep an eye out for our staff riding them this summer.

 @Drew-O: Horseshoe bay more likely.

I am sure the locals will hype the long lines, but in reality it will be a ghost town. With prime riding conditions all season long.

I appreciate that the upgrade to the Fitz chair is necessary so people complaining about it need to come to terms with the fact that sometimes things have to be a little worse before they get better. However, because the Fitz chair is going to be closed for the summer, this'll be the first summer in over a decade I'll be skipping my trips to Whistler. If Vail decided to reduce lift prices to reflect the fact that people will get 1/3 as many laps in then I'd consider it. But full price tickets to get 3 runs in for a day is a little rich.
  • 14 10
or, because the Fitz is closed and everybody is making the same assumption as you, the numbers will actually be way down, therefore you could get in as many runs, if not more, than you typically would.

Is it worth the gamble?
  • 8 0
It's definitely pain now for gain later. I believe the new Fitz is going to almost double capacity, on top of the higher capacity Creekside. 2024 will be pretty good.
  • 13 0
@k2theg: Time will tell. But with social media a feel like there will be a feedback loop that forms. A few posts of "it's so busy" will drive away the crowds. Then a few "It's so empty" will bring them back and the cycle continues. For those of us that have to drive 1000+ km to get there I think I'll just stop short and stay longer at Silverstar and Sun Peaks.
  • 6 0
Where'd you get the 1/3 as many laps figure? Compared to last year we lose Fitz but gain whistler gondola capacity and all of creekside.
  • 3 0
@schili: build it and they will come. WBP will always be busy and trails will getting thrashed quicker.
  • 4 0
@k2theg: Didn't seem to happen last year when Creekside was down. Visited in September and it was 45mins to an hour at Fitz each lap. Plus Creekside and a substantial portion of the Garbo zone was closed because of the Creekside construction. Which sounds similar, just flipped, to what's upcoming.

I really don't get that when a big portion of the mountain is closed and there is far less lift access, why the prices remain the same?

I actually didn't so much mind the waits and the trails were still super fun... but it's the value.. it wasn't, and won't be, there.

We'll head elsewhere this year.
  • 3 3
Random made up stat...riddle me this...if Gondola is only for bikers...and EVERY car loads 4 people and 4 biles instead of every OTHER chair on Fitz...is the capacity not more? lol.

we'll smash some party laps for you buddy...

 @k2theg: shhhhh

@cueTIP: highly unlikely that visitor numbers will be down much if at all. They have been growing (MTB has clearly grown in popularity significantly in the lower mainland since COVID), there are enough riders in SW BC/WA state that even without fly-in tourists it will be busy. Locals with DH passes are going to buy passes pretty much no matter what etc. The only hope is Creekside/Garbo laps once they open in June. Opening weekend will be comically busy with insane lines, especially given weather.
  • 3 0
@cueTIP: Dont come here, the riding sucks, the people are worse, lots of smoke, cops everywhere, its super cliquey, no good beer, we hate "out of towners", Whistler is not busy at all, I hear Squamish is the place to be, Bragg Creek has great riding, Did I mention the smoke, Nelson has way better riding, the lake is full of dead fish, and Albertans........I could go on
  • 1 0
@ranchitup: Lots of folks prefer the fitz zone over all the other zones. I'll ride creekside and garbanzo but not more than once or twice a day and judging by the traffic whenever I've been there I'd say the vast majority of people feel the same.

Also, keep in mind the gondola will still be serving the people going up to sightsee and ride the P2P.
  • 1 0
@cueTIP: it appears it will not run tourists just bikers.
  • 1 0
@cueTIP: Village gondola is exclusively bikes this year. Sightseers can only upload the Blackcomb Gondola.

There is something like 11 new trails in the Creekside zone. Hopefully some of them are worth riding more than once or twice.

Capacity down prices up, welcome to Vail resorts.

SunPeaks will have lines this year? That’s new!
  • 1 1
 @Erku: Fail corp.
  • 5 1
Sun peaks doesn't even come close to whistler. It is just painful to be there, save yourself the drive and just go wait in the whistler line through the village it's way more worth it. Same with Revy that's opening this weekend too, don't even waste your time driving up from the lower mainland to these places.
  • 11 0
I cannot wait to see the social media posts of the line for the gondola June 11th. I predict a line wrapping through most of the village. Will still be a good vibe there though.

Check this video out of the long line crowded insanity this spring.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm8tTbzybW8
  • 5 0
FYI the sundial hotel has a 24/7 youtube livestream that you can see the lines from.
  • 1 0
@j-t-g: Thanks just checked it out, the village doesn't look quite right without Fitz.
  • 2 0
 @j-t-g: Yeah its a really useful tool - www.sundialhotel.com/webcam

The Sundial also has great rooms to view Crankworx from a secure bike vault to lock your prize possessions in and a good wash station. Really recommend it as a place to stay.

@paulskibum: for a nice splurge, the rooftop suite has a private hot tub w/ view of the park
  • 1 0
Haha the grumpy old skier at the start.
  • 1 0
I know nothing about whistler. Do you have to wait in this line for just 1 run, or is this line giving you access to the whole mountain/other lifts?
  • 10 1
For those concerned about the lines and because I have nothing better to do.

4 bikes and people per cabin gives 960 people per hour @ lift speed of 5 m/s. 4 people every second chair on Fitz was 1325 people per hour @ 5m/s. VG capacity will be about 72% of old Fitz now that it's bikes in every cabin. Although this is dependent on how efficiently and quickly the liftys can herd squids into cabins.
  • 8 0
I was looking for this info, as I also had nothing better to do. Smile I get slightly different numbers from you? It shows the Whistler VG to have a capacity of 2640-2800 ppl/hr based on 8 ppl per gondola. If you cut that in half for 4 ppl and bike per gondola, we are at 1320-1400 ppl/hr. This is also based on 5 - 5.5m/s speed. Fitz claims 1800 ppl/hr at full capacity, which would be 925 ppl/hr at half capacity (4 ppl every other chair). So by these numbers the gondola will actually be better? Im sure I am missing something on how the Fitz chair is actually less than half capacity when they switch over to bike trays in the summer?

Keep in mind, all of creekside is open as well.
  • 4 0
Shhh...let them keep complaining so they dont come.
  • 5 0
@shoreboy1866: I got my lift stats from liftblog.com/whistler-blackcomb-bc . Which shows 2640 @5.5 for VG and 2650 @5.0 for Fitz. It appears your 1800 upload capacity is for the old fixed grip Fitz chair that was on Blackcomb in the 80's.

I also calculated the gondola capacity at 40% instead of 50% for bike use based on the old "10 person" cabins as it appears that's what the 2640 number is based on.

If we combine the Fitz capacity of 1325 ppl/hr and VG at 192 ppl/hr (4 bikes every 5th cabin, as it has been in the past), previous total upload capacity from the village was 1517 ppl/hr. So total village upload capacity is around 63% of previous years.

I’d like to see a “how to vid” fully loaded for the day
  • 1 0
@gtill9000: Not until June 10th. May as well stay home until then.
  • 1 0
@whislander: Solid analysis. Assume they will be running it at the same speed (VG) but the real challenge is there's zero chance they get 4 bikers/bikes in every cabin. Whenever an inexperienced group/tourist/single mixes in, things will get jammed up.
  • 9 0
It's almost worth heading up there just to watch how long the lineup will get.
  • 3 1
Let's turn this bad news around. What's everyone's second favorite bike park? As in where will you be going this summer now that whistler is hopelessly f*cked. I hope some other resorts are stepping it up.
For me:
1. Angel Fire - IMO as close to whistle as it gets but way better value.
2. Trestle/ Frisco

Maybe I'll check out revelstoke and big white. Silverstar was trash for me last year, zero trail maintenance. I havn't been to Sun Peaks in a few years.
  • 3 0
Can confirm Revelstoke is worth the drive, the bike park is impressive.
  • 2 0
Angel Fire opens this weekend too! Hopefully Keystone can get a solid trail crew for the summer and rumor has it Copper is trying to get a bike program going too.
  • 4 0
@alex-bowen: if I’m going that way I’m riding Kicking Horse. Much better IMO
  • 8 8
Mountain creek thunder, and Highland and killington. I just about as good, if not better than Whistler
  • 2 0
@kilo11: Really? I didn't ride Kickinghorse last summer but have many times in the past. I find it rather meh. Great tech trails up top but not a lot of variety. Just lots of steep rocky vertical. Fun but lacking variety. I actually really prefer Panorama now except that damn chair is not up to the task.
  • 3 0
@kilo11: kicking horse is better than Revy, confirmed.
  • 1 0
@ratedgg13: Revy in the next 5 years ; Hold my beer. Kicking horse has been the same for a while. Revy is maybe 3 years old by now and add new trails every season
  • 1 0
I had a really good time at Kicking Horse in 2019, sadly my last trip to BC so far.
  • 1 0
@cueTIP: I suppose that super long and blown out flow trail may have sullied my experience at revy lol but the last time I rode kicking horse it was end of season and there was snow at the top. It was still better
  • 3 0
I wouldn't judge any bike park based on trail maintenance last year. Whistler was hot garbage after CW as well. Best trails-lineups-ammenities outside of Whistler? I'd vote for SunPeaks.
  • 3 0
@kilo11: One lap down Stick Rock and LYM and you will have a new favourite trail.
  • 1 0
@souknaysh: fair enough. I just remember all the hype around opening 5620 and then riding it and being so disappointed. Hopefully they both put in some work to upgrade and expand their offerings!
  • 1 0
@ratedgg13: yes same here, publicity stunt for sure ; Biggest vert in NA, but slowly getting there with some fun new tech trails. They need more trails tho, especially more that start from the gondola that way the 5620 is not clapped out days after the opening
  • 2 0
Sun Peaks is hands down the second best bike park after WBP in BC. Silver Star might edge it in variety of jump lines, but Sun Peaks is bigger and has better tech and way more capacity with two lifts.
  • 6 1
Don't forget about pedaling. Plenty of great riding out there. You don't need a lift or a V6. Or even an ebike.
  • 3 1
 Pedaling? That’s so 2017
  • 2 0
I don't understand. Last year you couldn't take the gondola anyways with a bike, and the fitz was doing people - bikes every other chair. If 4 people and 4 bikes all fit into every gondola, then the wait will be similar to last year. ‍♂️
  • 2 0
Also omit that emoji. Android -> pinkbike keyboards do not align
  • 1 4
The gondola has to load hikers. It can take quite a bit longer to get through a line
  • 6 0
@olafthemoose: no hikers on the gondy. they have to go to Blackcomb
  • 1 0
@jaydawg69: Yep - hikers can download on Whistler gondola but not up load.

I expect the gondola to end up being a bit of a sh*t show for loading four people and bikes because of people being people - they find it hard enough to get ona gondola with skis in their hands add bikes, kids with bikes, people with backpacks and bikes and full face helmets etc etc and it will probably be less than 4 per cab and potentially a few stop starts. But I dont think it will be as bad as everyone imagines.
  • 7 1
@paulskibum: 3 people is a good fit... 4 people gonna be tight, especially when the Team America shows up.
  • 4 0
Here comes the gongshow...I'll wait until Creekside is open. Then I can justify spending pretty much$100/day
  • 3 0
It looks like every gondola will be allocated to bikes and 4 bikes/riders per gondola… is this really going to be that slow?
  • 2 0
No, it won't be. There'll no doubt be slow downs on the gondola as people struggle with bikes, but the extra cabins will make a massive difference to uphill capacity.
  • 1 4
@kingtut87: Would need to be every cabin for bikes!!! over 1/2 of the people on the Gondola are going up to hike.
  • 4 0
@MOLDTRUTH: Looks like they will use Blackbomb gondola only for hiking, with this garb side gondola for bikes only
  • 1 0
First time in years that I'm going to see how this plays out. The lines have been pretty bad with Fitz and the Gondy running at weekends. I can't see even with the reduction in visitors how its going to be any better. That gondy lift is going to be stop starting as people struggle to fit themselves in. WBP really should have thought about adding some eternal bike trays instead.
  • 1 0
Well, I've been on the fence between a 5 day or a 10 day. Now I know - 5 day and I'm waiting until June 10th for Creekside. I'm not bothering with the Village gondola nonsense. Yeah I get we have to suffer a little to benefit later, but I'm going to try to limit how much I have to suffer.
  • 1 0
Why is Whistler getting a new Fitz chair? Because the chair was bought for PCMR (Park City Mountain Resort) but then the permit was revoked after the chair was bought. Vail was sitting on a chairlift and needed to now find a place for it. The lucky winner? Whistler! Which messes up our bike park season.

It’s not like an 8 pack is needed for the winter. People ride the gondy not Fitz; and dumping an 8 pack into 4 pack Garbo also doesn’t make sense for the winter. So now the story is that the extra capacity is for the bike park.
  • 1 0
Everyone is talking about the wait times to get up the mountain but no one seems to be concerned about all the trails that will be closed during the construction. Whether you can or can't get as many laps is irrelevant if the best trails are closed like so many were last year. If WBP thinks everyone is going to shift over to Creekside and ride the limited number of trails that are over there, those trails will get beat up pretty quickly in the dry summer that has already started.

Vail, do the right thing and reduce the ticket price if all of the mountain/trails is/are not available! At least open Facrobat for the first time in 3 years.
  • 2 0
Assuming the gondola is running at full speed (big if), capacity is only about 15% lower than normal, so the lines might not be as bad as everyone is expecting.
  • 2 0
I remember waiting in both lines, Fitz and gondola as well. Can't imagine it won't be so bad
  • 1 3
That might be true in theory, but what about all the hikers and sight seers who take the gondola up each day? Capacity will have to be shared with that crowd as well.
  • 4 1
@shoreboy1866: VG is only uploading bikers this summer so they will fill 100% of the gondolas with bikes. Only download for sightseers.
  • 3 0
@asur90: Ah! That makes sense. Foot traffic goes up via Blackcomb then? I guess that will get them a lot more Peak 2 Peak tickets sold as well.
  • 2 0
@shoreboy1866: Hikers are only allowed on the Blackcomb Gondola this year.
  • 4 0
@shoreboy1866: as mentioned, no sightseeing upload so all the cabins being used for bikes VS 1 in 4 previously. The layout they've got for loading should help keep things smooth too. Once Creekside opens up, along with the new trails in that zone and the higher speed creek gondi it probably won't be too bad.
  • 2 0
feels like a great summer to give some other bike parks in the region a try. no doubt whistler will be worth the spend next summer with every lift running tho
  • 2 0
that's my plan: replace ~10 days in Whistler with 1/2 dozen BC bike parks. If you're camping for even p[art of it it's way cheaper too.
  • 1 0
I'll be up there this weekend, nope to WBP. I'll be riding valley trails. Maybe riding creekside on weekdays only this season. Shame about the FITZ this season....building a better WBP
  • 1 0
Should have built an additional chair out of the village. Having an 8 person chair is gonna be a poop show in the winter as it will serve all of the Jerry's loading up in the village.
  • 1 0
For those who frequent Whistler, how hard is the pedal to creekside if you're staying in the village? Is it worth it to wait in line for the gondola and then crossover or is it easier to just coast over to Creekside?
  • 1 0
15 minute cycle and fairly straight forward, just follow the well signed valley trail. Though there is two hills which would be a bit of a grind on a DH.
  • 1 0
Pretty easy pedal, a couple of small uphills but downhill the majority of the way.
  • 1 0
Easy pedal and mostly downhill. Dont let the complainers spoil it for you...lines will be fine with the changes in how they run the Gondola.
  • 1 0
 Appreciate the intel!
  • 2 0
Hopefully we get a bike/gear/nationality breakdown this year. We need data.
  • 3 4
Holy Shit! So bummed. Canceling my condo reservations. Last year mid week the waits were 30-40 min at Fitz with creekside closed. The gondola capacity can't even be half of Fitz. So basically it's a creekside only summer. Other parks are better than creekside alone.

There will be new job openings for queue waiters

@bman33: I get that but given that all the lifts are utilized in the winter and only some in the summer...you'd figure they'd have a better strategy to get it done without too much break down in time.
  • 4 1
@preach: how would that happen? All lifts run in winter, yes the Fitz lift runs in summer as well, but the ski season is VASTLY busier and more profitable. How would you suggest they replace a lift without taking it offline ?
  • 1 0
@bman33: Its also how much harder to replace a chair lift when there is a few feet of snow on the ground...
  • 1 0
@Canadmos: Exactly. Not sure what preach thinks is a viable option. Am I upset about it? Sure because my crew is coming up this year. However, logically I understand it is what it is. Unit 3 years ago, I lived in Colorado for over a decade. I understand Vail sux, but also understand the logistic of running a lift assisted resort. Non-ski season is when the lifts get replaced or upgraded.

flag preach (May 17, 2023 at 13:51) (Below Threshold)
@bman33; don't be dickish. The #1 summer mtb destination in the world shuts down their most used lift for the summer? That's just poor planning. Just because I'm not a resort manager doesn't mean it's not true.
  • 3 1
@preach: Not sure bman33 is being a jerk. They need to replace a lift, they have given alternates. It is not poor planning at all. They given everyone a notice almost a year in advance, have come up with a plan to route more people through Gondola, moved hikers over to Blackcomb and increased trail mileage in Creekside to hold the additional capacity. What else do you suggest and don't say install the new lift parallel to the old lift. Only so much room to install lifts without major environmental impacts.
  • 2 1
@preach: I agree, #1 MTB destination at least in the North America, maybe globally. That said, not a single ski resort does major updates/repairs or lift replacement or new installs during ski season. In addition, ski season is VASTLY more profitable and busier than MTB's. I lived in Colorado for little over a decade, I have seen what it takes to take down an old lifte and install/test a new one (and make major repairs). It's NOT a weekend job. My comment stands....please tell us how they make the changes with no bike partk interruptions....

@bman33: I hear you, but that's not my problem. I don't have to have a solution to still be able to say "that shouldn't happen".
  • 3 1
@preach: Dude...pretty arrogant and low minded atittude. Again, your 'that shouldn't happen' is such an irrational and emotional response. You still haven't provided a solution...WHEN /HOW should Whistler make the upadates/repairs/installs? Should they call you first for approval? Does Sugar or Beach call you prior to make lift repairs or updates?

flag preach (May 17, 2023 at 14:30) (Below Threshold)
@bman33: it's a fallacy to say "you can't point out a problem without having a solution". (throw any number of problematic ill-handled issues up) It's a problem, it's gonna suck for the consumer, someone couldv'e figured out something else....is that so hard to grasp?
  • 5 1
@preach: Not hard to grasp at all. Again, your attitude is coming from a place of ingnorance. 100% guaranteed a multi billion dollar corp such as Vail (although not a fan of them) had a vastly qualified team of project planners as well as the lift manufaturer and other 3rd party contractors involved to look at all vialbe options. Guess what? They have two options.... 1. interrupt the ski season or 2. interrupt the summer season (bikes, hikers, etc). There is not 'could've figured out something else....'. As others noted above, they gave everyone a year's advanced notice, updated the flow of hikers and bikers to other lifts AND opened more trails at the Creekside Zone. Other than magic, nothing else could have been 'figured out....' Facepalm
  • 2 1
 @Canadmos:
Here in France when they change a lift they actually build another one in parrallel. And sometimes they removed the old one after (but often it stays in place to increase the uplift capacity).
  • 3 0
@hpman83: this chairlift is the one already next to the Gondola, I'd assume there no room to add a third, without significant investment and tree removal.
  • 1 0
@Canadmos: Exactly. In the PNW and Canada the removal of trees and disturbing environmental sensitive areas is harder to get approved than the actual construction permits. In Washington we have the SEPA process. Its a good process that covers multiple environmental, cultural and construction items but in many situations especially with state or public land it is not an easy process to get thru.
